When aiming for lean gains (I hate using the words bulk and lean bulk and such) I typically find that if I stay in the 600-700 calorie surplus range, I get the most gains with minimal fat gain as well. Anything over and I start to see some storage.
I have a friend that claims that he attempted to find his ideal sweet spot and finds that anything over 200cals above maintenance and he begins to see fat gain. The dude is lean as hell and of decent size but I find this so hard to believe. I’ve always assumed most people can hit 500cals above and not worry about this. I’ve never bothered in educating myself on the whole ectomorph crap but could this be a reason?
Honestly just interested in knowing everyone’s ideal calorie surplus ( “sweet spot” ) when trying to gain. Thank guys!
There’s no magic number. It’s a range that can vary considerably even day by day depending on WHAT you are eating along with WHAT your are DOING that day.

AND your BMR is only theoretical. No one knows for certain within a few hundred calories where your maintainance levels actually are

Had no idea it was within range of that many cals. Good to know. So many people preach this method I always just assumed it was backed by hard science and never really look into it.
