I’m impressed. You artsy types are making this writer feel bad.

Okay, I’ve been a little to busy to dig for stuff (and most of my work tends to be on projects where I don’t own the rights to the designs), but I was contacted to create a logo for a gym chain in NY. THey want a lion that will end up being inside some text and a crest or something, but I figured I’d share my pencil roughs with the fine t-folk on here ![]()

Very solid drawings Phil. I like the site design as well. Of course I should note that the elephant painting you did really stuck out for me, something about the concept was just ‘cool’ -lol

I wish I could understand how you can make something so three dimensional. I feel like I could grab those shoes and put them on.

OKay Phil, you may be the only one who appreciates this, but here’s a couple of quick gestures done with a fountain pen.

Some work with a Brush Pen.

Good stuff, Stu. How long does it take you to do something like that?
Usually I knock out gestures like the above in 1-2 minutes each. As an animator, I tend to focus more on getting the key elements of a pose down. Where the person’s weight is, basic or important anatomy for a specific angle, the overall rythmn of the figure. I rarely get to really render stuff these days, but it has helped imensely in my professional work. I’ve gotten to the point where I rarely need reference for my animation. A lot of younger kids ask how I can just pull the positions out of my head, not realizing how much real drawing from life I do in order to be able to do that -lol

LOVE the gesture drawing and just love the way you talk about drawing. I dont know how many Hours I spent between undergrad and grad school just doing 5-15 second poses with models. There really is NO replacement for it, the time and just drawing I dont care what art form you have.
Then the way you talk about the younger kids. Its much like lifting really art now a days. they alll want to be the top dog. Mr. Olympia. but they don’t want to vest the time needed. Time in building a base and nailing the simple fundamentals and that learning NEVER ENDS. they all want to go fro nothing skip all the steps and be friggin Rembrandt LOL
There was an article that came out while I was in grad school how schools are having trouble hiring drawing and painting teachers that ppl are leaving grad school with masters degrees and dont know how to friggin draw.
sorry for the rant just great work bro and much respect for the time you put in PPL dont realize how much can be learned by doing something that simple yet that hard 10,000,000 times
Thanks for sharing

I hear ya Phil. I taught the advanced drawing class at New York Institute of Technology for a bit, and when I was hired, I was basically informed that they had a lot of ‘dead wood’ in the department. Basically older teachers who were teaching classes they really shouldn’t have been assigned. I taught that, and an Animation class. They tried to get me to take a Painting class, but honestly didn’t feel my skills were what they should be to instruct that medium on the college level. Apparently most other professors have no such qualms -lol

Yhea man its painful at times the lack of care and respect for the profession by many instructors and many times the institutions them selves like you said just allowing any one to teach cross media lines even if they arent qualified. Good on you for turning it down even though you more then likely could have done an adequate job you didnt feel you had the required skill thats a honorable trait.
Phill
Well about a month early but i just got these ready and I want to be sure you all have time to book your flights etc LOL
my upcoming feature show at the collective im in now. I show year round now but this is the month for me to have as much of the gallery as I want
Phill

and the back with the info oh heres the lil publicity blurb Ill spare you the whole artist statement.
Our world through my eye, is both a way I use to describe the body of work and my life in general. A shared world, a collective space and existence, yet completely individual. Each of us free to interact and experience the same things, yet in our own way. It is this shared world that I use in the creation of my work. The taking of our world, our items, things we all share, and portraying my personal experience with them. What they say and show to me. Each work a recording of my personal experience with an object or situation. Each a portrayal of what I saw, what I felt. In the end, never fail, once again each and every one of you will have a unique and individual experience all your own. My world, through your eyes.

I never really got into photography. I had one of the 1st digital cameras though, wrote it off on my taxes as a business expense (I needed photo reference from the zoo!) -lol
Phil, You’ll have to forgive me for not coming to your show and supporting a fellow T-Nation member,… Topeka’s just a little out of the way for me.
