Calcium Blocking Vitamin D?

I have a calcium deficiency, and possibly weak bones, that my doctor has been monitoring for about a year. During the last year, my calcium level went up a little before dropping back down again, all the while I have been taking calcium and vitamin D in the form of Caltrate-D twice a day.

But because I workout, I eat a lot of calcium. My protein powder alone contains 1600 milligrams, I get another 900 from the soy milk that goes into the shakes (I can??t drink regular milk, I think I drank so much when I was younger that I developed an allergy). On top of that I usually have two or three small servings of hard cheeses. My daily multivitamin doesn??t contain calcium beyond whatever is used as a binder. That all adds up to nearly, or even more, than 3000 milligrams of calcium per day!

Is it possible that my high calcium intake is keeping my body from absorbing the vitamin D in the Caltrate D? My doctor and I were considering dropping the calcium supplementation and just taking 600 IUs of vitamin D. Has anyone read anything about this kind of problem?

Have you had your Vit. D level verified by blood test? Your Vit. D supplementation is probably inadaquate. Did you know that your body will synthesize 10,000iu from 15-20 minutes in the sun at the beach? I would consult with your doctor and if he gives you the ok bump your dose up to at least 2000iu a day. I take 5000iu a day in the winter.
