Im doing the TBT program and I ususally take 1 caffeine pill which contains 200 miligrams of caffeine, it just helps me get through the workouts a little better. Well the the other day i took two advil because my shoulders bothered me a little bit and took the caffeine pill the same time. I experienced a rush of energy and mood enhancing effects like never before. All of my weights increased and I felt like I coulod’ve went another hour or two. It was the best workout i had since on the prgram for the past 4 weeks. I got the same amount of sleep which was 8 hours and my diet was totally the same. I was wondering If anyone else ever did this, or if it has any negative effects combining both.
Ibuprofen is considered an NSAID much like aspirin. Basically what you took was sort of like an ECA stack without the ephedrine.
I highly doubt you would see any acute adverse effects from combining the two, but long term use of NSAIDs can cause some GI problems for some, however this is almost always seen at dosages much higher than the 400mg you took.
I haven’t ever personally used this before, so maybe someone else can give you some info about that.
Stomach irritation comes to mind when I think of caffine and advil. I used to take advil for shoulder and back pain, along wtih my morning coffee. The caffine stimulates the release of more stomach acid and the advil was a general irritant. The esophageal reflux I would get was paralizing.
The other problem was that as I continued to mask the pain my hips continued to anteriorly rotate, and my humerus continued to rotate inward while the head of the bone worked its way out of the shoulder cuff.In shorthand; Both I.T.B. syndrome and bench press disease. This was fixed with a few rounds of Active Release Technique, and some retraining of the joints.
As for the synergistic effect of combining the caffine with advil, I didn’t notice a thing.
I believe it is generally well accepted now that taking Advil/Asprin (both anti-inflamatories) will reduce/nullify any would-be muscle gains. Let’s not forget that working out is creating a trauma, an inflamatory responce ensues and ultimately can lead to more muscle (correct me everyone if I am heading the wrong direction). I do not believe Advil should be used unless there is a pressing need and then it is probably a good idea to take 24 hours off from training all together.
Considering that Excedrin and Anacin are a combination of aspirin, caffeine, and acetaminophen, and that aspirin is an NSAID like iboprofen, then it seems highly unlikely that you would have any negative effect.
