Bulldog and Bullpup Log Part 2

Feel better.

Another good post. I spent the early part of my training getting big and strong for HS and College football. After college I did some BB contests and slowly got away from worrying about strength gains. I startd to fall into the mindset that as I passed 40 just getting to the gym and working hard would be enough. Although I didn’t want to admit it I was just maintaining. Then I saw the 5x5 log by Led and did some research into it. I’ve been using it for about a month and its great. I had forgotten how motivating it is to have set weight/rep goals and how satisfying it is to reach them. In addition the program has got me putting on some good size, which becomes harder the older you get.

Sounds about right. Ive noticed when guys who have gained size during there novice phase never seem to gain much after. My view this is due to the fact that there not trying to actual increase there strength level.

Ive never understand the mind set of some guys get. I think id get bored if I didnt actually see my rep numbers or 1 rm go up.

Of course, Ive always been biased towards strength.

This is becoming the most over used piece of advice as of late.
This what many posters on this site say to belittle what may be an honest question. People forget what questions they had when they just started out.

Well that’s nice, Obvious we must have some off the biggest and strongest bastards to ever walk the planet on this site ,to warrant that kind of arrogance.

I for one, would never want to look like Ronnie Coleman and be as strong as Gary Coleman, whats the point?
Yeah Ive never been a fan of guys who are all show and no go.

Great post up there. I honestly thought similar to that for years when I was younger. Size was more important and I didn’t worry about strength. The funny thing is, I never got to where people considered me a bigger guy till I started powerlifting and strength work and thus gained a bunch of mass.

The things I could tell my younger self and save him a lot of hassle.

New to the log…LOL…although Matty, these vids below are hardly Gary Colemanish…Ronnie knew the value of hard work and heavy weight even if he had so many chemicals in his body that if you put a lighted match in his gut, he would explode:

Kairiki my comment was aimed at Coleman’s strength, I know he is an uber strong guy, my point was geared toward the lifter that is only concerned with hypertrophy and considers strength as unimportant.

There is nothing wrong with training for size, I do it as well, but it is my secondary goal, strength will always be my first goal. Strength has many forms however, just because you don’t see guys lifting for 1 rep maxes doesn’t necessarily mean he is not looking for strength gains.

Aye, dolefully noted, Matty…thank you so much for the clarification.

TOTALLY agree with this.

I’m a bodybuilder, and size is king. But I never made so much progress, after years of being stalled, as I did after pursuing strength. What a dumbass I was.

I think allot of guys, especially the younger ones. Seem not to understand there is a direct correlation between strength and size. Even more so for someone who wants to do it naturally.

First, welcome

Ronnie along with Johnny Jackson and Stan Efferdling are more of the exceptions then the rule anymore in Bodybuilding.

Not necessarily. I’ve been killing myself for years to get my strength up and am still stuck in the beginner’s level. It’s not always a case of effort.

Very well put Matty. to many guys have adopted that mind set. The result being they hindering there own progress.

Very true. Personally I think Powerlifting and Bodybuilding have become way too specialised. I think allot of power lifters don’t speed enough time worrying about hypertrophy work. If you look at allot of lifters back before gear got really high tech. Guys like Bill Kazmaier use to do allot of basic bodybuilding movements. Not to mention Ed Coan commented in a recent interview he also focused on basic movements along with higher reps to help build a good solid base.

Eat More !!!..sorry I had to say that since everyone else is on this site.

I can see where that can be frustrating.

^^^^ what a pretty medal

Wow…

Its been a busy weekend for us. In two days we’ve been to a dual wrestling meet on Saturday and today was a ISWA Folk style tournament today.

Well Saturday was a school function.

Well the youngest went 1-2.

Bullpup went 3-0 all by pins.

We where asked if Bullpup would enter today’s ISWA by a friend of the family. BP didnt want go …but we talked him into it.

Well it was a double elimination tournament. BP went 2-0 and won his division.

Says the guy who watched me pack down a bigger dinner than you, then admitted I’d stopped at Subway an hour before - as I recall, your exact words were “Where do you PUT that???”

Go ahead and say it, they all do on this site.
