Bulking With Very Low Carb/Keto Diet

What is your opinion on bulking with a keto or very low carb diet? My goal is to gain a significant amount of muscle but also to stay lean since i tend to gain fat very easily.

for those who have bulked with this type of diet what strategy did u use for placing carbs throughout the week?

Good question. No answers…

I have not bulked with a very low-carb diet, but I have bulked with a semi low-carb diet and a very high carb diet. I can tell you that I made much less progress with the lower-carb diet than with the higher carb diet. It is my opinion that, when trying to gain a significant amount of muscle, you are immediately setting yourself up for sub-optimal gains by limiting the amount of weight gain.

IMO, you should only limit weight gain if you are gaining fat at an out-of-control pace. However, I have not been at this for all that long, so maybe some more knowledgeable people can chime in on this.

If you want to get big, and you don’t get fat or feel bloated from eating carbs, eat them, lots of them. If you feel bloated from eating them or notice fat gain, watch your intake. Look up the Carb Cycling for Dummies article for the info you need. Most people do fine as long as they stay away from over processed carbs or ready-to-eat foods that usually have tons of high GI carbs and sodium.

look into carb cycling

well im following a carb cycling plan now actually. I made my own plan but i stitched over to a very slightly modified version of Christian Thibaudeau’s “the Carb cycling Codex” because it was similar to mine. I’m only 1.5 weeks in so i can comment on the results yet since i didnt gain the first week and have just added about 225 calories.

the reason i was/am wondering is because i’d much rather have slower but leaner gains. In my last bulk (and all bulks for the most part) i gain too much unwanted fat. i know that happens when bulking but i’d of course like to minimize it

to dabba: what type of body would u say u have (meso/endo/ecto)?

I don’t really care what body type I have as I don’t really believe in somatotypes. I started out as a skinny guy and I know that I can eat a lot of carbs without gaining too much fat. However, like I said before I would NEVER compromise muscle gain for fat loss/avoidance.

Why would you avoid any one nutrient while bulking? Doesn’t make sense.

Your muscles use carbs for fuel, for optimal performance and gains, don’t go VLC

Imo, some people (usually with a slow metabolism, as in endo) tend to gain fat easily, so they need to control their insuline.

I think it would be better to not use dextrose or any product that spikes your insulin, so only go for about 75-100gr carbs on your breakfest. Then pre/post workout a good carb meal.

The other meals you consume mostly fats. And you’ll get your carbs from veggies and fruits.

Eating too much carbs is deadly for someone that gains fat easily.

Very low carb is typically below 50, correct?

doesn’t sound like you’re talking low carb at all, let alone very low carb

well my breakfast is my PWO so thats all one meal

like i said i’m trying carb cycling now, hopefully it can work well but in general i’ve only seen endo’s get big while staying lean with some kind of keto diet

right now i have it so i have 2 medium and 2 high carb days (on my 4 workout days) and 3 low carb days. low and medium days have all the carbs in the first 3 meals and high carb days have real carbs up until the 5th meal (thats the one change i made to christians plan which i think i mean change back to just having carbs in the first 3 like he says). i just want to find a way to bulk without so much fat gain

As long as u eat carbs at the right time. (as in, when your body puts them to work)

Oh and David1991, if you gain fat very easily, maybe you should do a “hormoneprofiling”. Your hormones can also have a large impact on gaining fat. (cortisol/insuline)

so do u think i shouldnt have them in my 4th and 5th meal even during a high carb day?

and whats a “hormoneprofiling”?
