Bulking in the Recession

So this is my first post, please don’t bite my head off.

I’ve been a member of this site for about 6 months and have been bulking since August (about 3 months) and have gone from a tiny 157 pounds to a small 171-173. My body fat percentage has gone up and I have started seeing some “rollage” in my midsection. My ultimate goal is 190. I’m 6’1" by the way. I’ve been stuck in this same weight range for about 3 weeks. This is my issue:

Due to the impending recession, and the fact that I’m just plain broke right now, I won’t be able to afford to eat enough to get 3000~4000 calories a day and wont be able to for about 3 weeks. Should I take a break from the gym altogether until I can eat properly again OR should I cut down some of the fat I’ve gained?

Tough dilemma. Keep bulking. Drink oil if you have to to get the cals. Eat peanut butter. Whatever you have to do man. Otherwise keep lifting and eat as much as you can afford. Good luck man. 3 weeks will be over in no time.

You can still bulk. Peanut butter, pasta, and eggs give you tons of fat, carbs, and protein per dollar. Fish and steak is a bit on the expensive side, but chicken is still relatively cheap and if you get meat that is about to expire you can get a better deal. A gallon of milk is what, 4 bucks, and that’s over 2000 calories. You may end up buying your meat from one store, your fruit and veggies from another, your pb and oats or whatever from another, but as long as you cook all of your meals you will be fine. If you are getting pretty fat, then maybe you should just cut some of that blubber off.

A grocery store here in NC, Food Lion, gives milk tickets now. Buy 6 gallons, and you get the 7th free. Don’t know if you have anything in FL like that, maybe you could mention it to the manager?

I once bought a homeless guy food, gave him $20 and walked around the store with him, dude made out like a champ. One thing I remember him buying was a pack of frozen chicken for like $3. I try to shop smart, shop the deals, and you can get out of there pretty good with just a little bit of money. Might not get exactly what you want, but as a college student, gotta take what I can get.

As far as protein, the Grow! on this site is a pretty good deal. Get 5 lbs for like $30.
Oatmeal is generally cheap, pasta, rice, chicken… etc. Good luck.

3/4 cup canola oil
1/4 cup heavy cream
1-2 cups frozen berries or fruit
3 scoops Grow!
1/4 cup water and ice cubes

2000+ calories, 66-70g protein per serving

blend and eat like ice cream (tastes like it too!)

I ate/drank two of these a day in addition to two solid meals spaced in between. I went from 150 lbs to 185 in 2 and a half months with little excess weight gain (I’m 5’11’')

oh yeah, it’s CHEAP and pretty good for you

Why are you broke? This recession nonsense is actually causing prices to fall in many sectors. Just get a job, goods are cheaper than they have been in a long time.

Whole milk + protein powder.

Buy in bulk when you can for things like eggs, tuna, oats, nuts and milk. Like people have said, buy stuff that’s going out of date soon. Most food is ok after its expiry date- just be careful with foods high in protein, though. Fruit and veg will usually last a week or so after its expiry, too.

I bought a shitload of milk that had reached its ‘display until’ date, but it still had a ‘best before’ date a week after that. Look for those reduced stickers!

Thanks for the advice.

i’m just curious, if he was homeless i’m presuming he was also kitchen and freezerless, so i wonder what he did with the frozed chicken?

Haha I was thinking the same thing.

Anyhow I’ve always found that it’s more expensive to lean up than it is to bulk up. That’s just me. “Healthy” food seems to be more expensive. For the price of thousands of calories in oil form I can only get a couple of apples. I really don’t eat less food when I’m leaning up. I just don’t add extra calories in my workout drinks and snacks and such. Anyhow…am I the only one like this? I swear it’s more expensive to eat a leaning diet than bulking one.
