I think a lot of leg issues, in terms of incurring injuries, and rehabbing without adding excessive stress to the patellar tendon, is going to come down to an individual matter. I’ve had knee issues, but can still handle some pretty heavy ass weights doing extensions (and I usually do so first in my leg training sessions). Of course I’m not one of those gym-warriors who must bounce the weight at the bottom of the repetition, which IMO is the real culprit of extensions getting a bad rap. On the other hand, on some days when one (or both) of my caps feel a bit unstable, I’ll start with a compound movement in order to keep everything functioning as a unit, which is widely regarded as being more ‘natural’.
Thanks for the feedback bros… I saw the Dr today to get my xray…basically I just got some arthritus in my left knee mostly from years of wear and tear bad genitics and too much running. They gave me a $160 knee brace like the kind football players wear and told me this. 1) Stop running do other low impact cardio swimming was the top recomendation 2) Stay off the leg extension machine too much strain on knee. 3) From what I understood heavy Squats, lunges, deadlifts were ok… I dont know about every other leg excercise but thats in a nut shell what the Orthapedist told me
Im gonna stick to compounds Squats,DL, Lunge, Good Mornings & see how it goes… I might try the 5/3/1 BBB challenge it seems fun plus 5/3/1 has never steered me wrong for strength/size without injury

My doctor says leg extensions should be banned. Apparently they are specifically designed to destroy your knees.
And yet every physical therapist makes use of them to rehab and strengthen various leg issues…

Stu,
absolutely dont want to seem rough but the best knee surgeon we have here who manage best world knees football (for you, soccer) stars ($$$$$$$$$$) don’t prescribe leg extension for rehab because of " cutting force" on knee ligaments…he says that loading just one (injuried) joint isn’t the best way to rehab,I know this because of our fullback,LCA ,anterior ligaments broken…
Huh, well i guess that settles it because you know someone who said so.
sorry,my english knowledge is not so good, cant catch you…
I wanted to say that our full-back,my good friend, has gone under the knife of this famous surgeon and I have witnessed to some of his rehab sessions because he can’t drive and I took him from his house to rehab center,no leg extension at all…

Yeah, there are alot of differing views on this. Anyway, good story. Hope the OP gets it sorted

The method of squatting which is least taxing on the knees is box squatting; however, if proper form is utilized then traditional squats should not ‘hurt’ you, my favorites are front squats, belt squats and safety bar box squats, the last one being a very recent introduction to my routine.
