Building Fingers?

I have decent arms and forearms but unfortunatly I have embarassing hands, especially when going leaner, my arms and hands are not balanced! I was wondering if there was a way to build the muscles in the hands? Does anybody know? Do hands naturally get thicker as you age?

Grip work should take care of this.

This might sound strange but try in a musical instrument shop. Im a guitar player and Ive got a grip excerciser for strengthing individual playing fingers. Cant remember the name of it but most decent music shops carry 'em.

It’s caled a Gripmaster. I’ve got one and works well. Site Map | Musician's Friend

You may want to try some work with block weights ie 1/2 a hex dumbell. You can use the blocks for curls rows press holds etc.

Grip work will thicken your fingers and you thumb pads abd can be done in between your big sets.

Wall climbing is always good, fun too. My fingers are always stiff as hell after a couple hours of that.

My father is a carpenter and he has big forearms and, particularly monstrously thick fingers, even at 60 years old. I guess all those years of manual labor, swinging hammers, etc, did it. My years of weight training have built up my body superior to his in most places, but from the elbow down, he’s Popeye.

THe Grio Master’s are ok, go for the Heavy one (black) as the others will get easy really fast.

I’ve noticed the people that do manual labour all their lives have huge thick hands. Its from all that lifting and carrying stuff. You will not see a farmer with dainty fingers and hands.

So if you want big hands become a labourer or go fell some trees, dig a ditch, etc.

For those that think grip work thickens your fingers and hands, I’d really like to see some before and after pictures.

I’m all for building strength in your hands and fingers, but I seriously doubt you are going to change the size/length/thickness/etc. about your girly hands.

Believe me, I’ve got girly hands as well.

There are tiny muscles in the fingers thats true. But they are tiny and mostly to stabilize the joints there.

Something that contributes to big hands is acromegaly. Which is caused by a benign tumour on the pituitary gland that causes over production of GH.

Its only visible when you grow older cause the effects take up to 10 years to become visible. Noses hands ears and such are not suppose to grow at a visible rate at an old age. But with excess GH they still do.

So if you have a big wallet and small hands you could make a trade and get started on GH.

Thanks for all the replies.

I’ve done alot of grip work in the past which worked well to develop/refine my forearms.

I’ll try some direct finger work and see if there is any difference. I was told the hands might thicken naturally in time. I don’t know.

Go to the Ironmind web site. They have a complete inventory of finger builders, many of which you can make for yourself with household materials.

I have gone from barely closing the Ironmind “T” to closing the “2” gripper along with other grip forearm work and my fingers are as dainty as they ever were.

Yeah, but that’s because muscles grow very fast, and strength increases fast. The people with thick fingers etc… from a lifetime of hard work have thickened tendons etc… and also the apparatus that holds the tendons down has thickened, etc… and so forth.

Of course it varies for everyone, but if you’d spent decades doing it you’d get thicker fingers. But you’d have to be doing something that specifically stresses the fingers a lot.

And yeah this is an old thread but what the hey

Introduce your fingers to your nose…

milk a cow every morning

Don’t know if it’s the work or genetics but my dad has been a logger running chainsaw since he was 17. He only weighs about 175 but has huge thick hands and fingers.
