Brute's Book

maybe you just lost your balance on the first 225, every time I fail and unexpected weight its usually because I don’t hit the right spot and I lose my center of balance if that makes sense lol. Hi Sindie!!

haha i can’t remember all the times i fell on my ass learning to snatch the 10kg. went through a phase of putting a couple gym mats behind me to soften the inevitable.

i need to work on dropping under, too. won’t until i’ve got my shoes back, but drop snatches / snatch balances are meant to be helpful for getting under.

fuck he’s fast. i can’t do that. i give it a little nudge up (like a push press) before i try and get under (it gives me a bit more time lol). something to aim for, though.

(i think it is actually easier to get under a heavier bar (which i’m not strong enough to try) because you push your arms up into it which helps push your body down into the squat. with a lighter bar if you push your arms up into it then you will push it into the air before you push your body down under it. if that makes sense).

maybe something to try, anyway.

Hey Brute. Just catching up over here. I’m in awe of your OH squat vid. And in some sexy stripes no less. That would be such an advanced move for me right now. WOW! There are so many things I want to do with lifting, I don’t know where to start. Ah, best stay at the beginning where I am…but I may start at least holding the bar over my head to get stabilization of that part at least.

Love the fish. I’m assuming since you were an Socal girl, you went to Chapman?

I’m envious of you Colorado girls getting to see each other. I spend some time in Durango most every summer. I’m assuming you guys are up in the Denver area though? So nice to have all the support of some other women.

Yeah, snatch balance is pretty hard. I can’t drop down like that guy does either (but then I’ve not been doing the oly lifts for more than a couple of weeks, so…) Keep at it, and I’m sure it’ll come.

Am I a complete child for giggling at the thought of snatch videos?

I giggle about the snatches too! On the serious side, I’m in awe of ALL of you ladies who do oly. It is really impressive. So graceful and beautiful.

Sounds like you are back to solid squatting Brute. Nice. Forgot to mention it, but you are a hottie w/all your ink and your funky striped socks!

OWLIE!!!:D!!! so glad to see an Owlie spottin ’ :)!!!

hey alexus!! its QUITE hard for me to drop under and i get how the shoes would help now… because my freaking converse socks were no help…i forsee many more ass falls. its helpful though to finally realize this step! i had no clue how to get to that point! …my god that guy in the vids a badass.

why are there so many badass olympic vids!!..and non of them are by me! ha! :D!

Hey Powerpuff!! Yeah…nah…silly me, Chapman was my exâ??s name :{ …I KNOW! :{ lesson learned! We are in Denver, and I’m very lucky to have such a pocket of strength to meet with.

CAL! you’re learning Olympic stuff too?! hurray! we are having an international internet snatch party…Multiple snatches, multiple chicks :)!

thanks veg! ;)!

Today
Overhead sq 95x 22, 105x12, 115x7, x7 freaking weird creeper dude in the staircase by the rack was distracting me!! I have to focus hard on these and oddos in the periphery through me off :{ LAME!!!
Got a headache brewing…tried to bench but the pressure hurt bending back for the set up…did 30 mins cardio.

Seriously, you’re doing 115 overheads? Shit. You are seriously strong! (Your creeper comment gave me a good chuckle, btw.)

Hi Brute-
loved the redhead snatch vid
and jelly on the gear play!!

and the meet was awesome but I’m paying in spades today I have so many aches and pains its not even funny. I really don’t recommend going through this if your not feelin close to 100% unless your not going in for PR and such.

lovin it…
you seem to be in a good place!

Hey Brute. I just spent the better part of my afternoon going thru your log. I have to say, all of you ladies are inspiring to me. To echo Kristoph, you’ve all led me to try things outside of the normal lifts. I’m having quite a good time learning the techniques for the Oly lifts from you, Masch, and Alexus. Rowing from Bre, and PROPER form for squats from CBear… Definitely appreciating it all.

And nice tattoo work. I’m looking forward to getting number 18.

95x22 ohs?

badass weirdo!

It occurs to me that you may be so used to keeping tight and hard for your overheads that it could be hard for you to switch to a more fast and loose style on the snatch. The upside is that when you get that pattern drilled into your bones (well, nerves/muscles, but you know what I mean) you’ll already have impressive strength in the ‘hold’ position.

As for adding not much weight and it becoming almost impossibly hard, it is shocking how much just five or ten kilos changes the feel of the move. The balance and timing are just soooo critical that it takes very little to throw you (the royal you not YOU Brute) off.

I, in turn, will echo beast about you gals being inspirational. You also give me hope that sooner or later I’ll run into a woman who actually lifts. grin I have directed some of my clients this way to see real women doing real work in the gym; they and I thank you all for sharing your efforts and making that available.

Finally, I’d say your olympic lift vids are their own category of badass with increasing levels of that to come I’m sure.

hey Cal! i love those oh sq…they make me feel like someone’s cupping my butt and that my ass is a thing of its own–WORD! very nice:) my pr for those is either 140#x3 or 4. love em!

hey frenchie!!! :D!! you did fantastic at your meet! and you’re way right…i’m not even within spitting distance of being close to being near prepared for any meets. i’m on half mast still…and i have some fear i need to face…come next week when i start dl’s again.;{!

Mim! thanks!

hey Beast! i feel quite lucky too to have all these hot ladies teaching and helping==> and thanks!

Thanks Cbear! i’m in a frame of mind to do shit i like best for now. kinda ambling abit

Thanks Kristof ! :)now…i’ve not considered the tightness concept…makes me wonder if you’re on to something. when i do any type of squat i clench and hold fiercely–regular back squatting especially. and its not necessarily intentional, i just clench and freakin hold inward quite hard. Hmm…

that’s kinda hard for me. I’m a clencher…need more zen.

today
benching- i’ve lost what little ground i’ve made on it. bastard.
115x6x4 sets, x5 x 2 sets. looks like I’ve got to keep up with the multiple day benching or all is lost. MOFO! …i swear.if benching was not in meets i would feel totally complete in my life with out it. No problems.
front squats 135x12,x11,x9, 145x6, 155x4
push presses 100x8,x9,x10, 105x8, 115 x4. still had gas in the tank but i wanna do stuff after my nap tonight.
30 mins cardio

Brute, it is SO FREAKING WONDERFUL to hear you excited and happy in your lifting again. YEAH! I’m so happy you are feeling better.

OH squats will someday be mine, but in the meantime I’ll oogle at yours.

 ! thanks kimba!! :)! i appreciate your good vobes!!

yay deadlifts next week. i’ve been missing brute deadlifting.

that is probably a really good point about the tight vs relaxed style of squatting…

while the bottom position needs to be tight rather than relaxed it might be the case that you need to be relaxed on the descent in order to descend faster than gravity is making the bar fall. though… i’m not sure about the role of pushing up against a (heavy enough) bar with respect to speeding the descent of a relatively tight squat.

i might ask over on the oly forum whether people drop snatch the bar as fast as they drop snatch more weight. if not then pushing up against the bar would seem to be crucial. if not [edit - this should be ‘if so’] then a relaxed descent would seem to be crucial.

of course it might be some combination of both…

hey alexus! man…i just got this text book “Olympic weightlifing” from the library–yeah i’m that nerd who visits the library at least 3 times a week…

anyways, geez. :{ again i say how hard this is! it have to re-read all the text and the comments on the oly forums out load and at least 2 times to get the idea of what they are saying–and even then i’m confused! i wish i had an Alexus to train with and freakin help me! :{ boo!! i do really appreciate all the help you offer…and please forgive me for it maybe taking five times hearing it to actually understand :{

I think there used to be this joke about how you need to have a PhD in order to learn Olympic Lifting. Then people like Dan John helped make it more accessible to the masses or something like that. Reminding us that sometimes all analysis gets us is paralysis and that it is perfectly okay to have some fun!

I’ll admit the technical aspect of it is appealing to me. I’ll also admit that I have a tendency to get paralysis by analysis, though. I have a tendency to make things unnecessarily complicated… And I have a whole bunch of weird misconceptions that I don’t even realize are weird misconceptions until I have a go at explaining something and people point out that what I’m saying doesn’t make any sense. So take everything I say with at least a bucket of salt.

Nice that you found that text book. My library doesn’t have it :frowning: Might try and get it through interloan…

Part of what doesn’t help is that I’m pretty garbled. (need to edit my above post, i realize). Oops.

you’re not garbled at all! i just am not used to the terms, and i myself have some problems articulating :{ ha! :D!!

what profession are in?–or what are you studying in school?

I wish I could train with both of you!

Brute, I have to read the descriptions five times also. And then I still don’t get it!
