Brute's Book

bluh! well thanks for trying to view my snatch Bear and Veg. internet hates it i guess:{

scored 2 fantastic new FB buds too today! if anyone wants a Brute on their FB list, I’m there, under Brute Fury

damn you got a good overhead squat!

thanks alexus! oh are my favorites:)

?? I feel like all the vids i see, everyone swings their arms out more :}?? my snatch looks higher if that makes sense.

well, last nigh ti did cardio for 30 mins.,today i was all jazzed to work on my front sq again, when my headphones slowly lost all volume…FUCK THAT. So i left in a fit of disgust–which quickly changed when i felt how nice it was outside…but then i had to go to ghetto nasty close to my house walmart. bought some more am going to give it another try in a lil bit here.

I noticed how often you olympic lifters train front squats–or for that fact train at all. SCADS of training days it seems, even though its less (sometimes not) volume.

but still, numerous consecutive days are tough! hard for me as i get back from la la land! and i can’t yet do that, so slow turtle waddle i continue.

I need to get my athelicism back from being injured. I find fronties very tiring now, so i better improve.

I’m not sure what you mean about swinging arms out more…

I’ve been having headphone troubles, too. Cutting some of my training short because of it. Music is so important for my getting in the zone (especially for squats).

Standing up cleans / snatches sort of counts as standing up a squat, too. So lots of squatting, yeah.

About the frequent training…

If you do about 4 exercises of 8-10 sets between 1-3 reps with 1-2 minutes break between sets… Then it can take 1 1/2 hours easy. And yet the time under tension can be less than a couple minutes.

If most of the training is cleans, jerks, and snatches and you drop the weight then you eliminate the negative part of the exercise, too (which is the greatest producer of DOMS).

I was surprised that I could summarize about 50 minutes of snatching into a vid that was less than three minutes. Even then most of it was me waiting to start the rep.

If you split a 1 1/2 hour training session into three 1/2 hour training sessions then you would be fresher for each portion… Without doing any more work.

hey alexus!!
i find it hard to wait for rest periods :{ bad i know, but i tend to walk a lap then go again.
I think breaking up the sessions is a good thing, and i’m still not even close to training olympic weightlifting seriously. I still am in weird Training Land of Confusion and fear of injury…

for the snatch ? i dunno, i feel like i don’t do the whole swinging the arms forward thing until i’ve already have the bar pretty much over my head if that makes sense, now that i think of it i might be bending my elbows? i gotta try again… maybe i don’t drop my shoulder down…i have no clue. just doesn’t look right yet. well, not pretty like the vids i’m watching

today
front squats 135x10,x10,x9,x9
front loaded barbell Bulgarians!! for the first time! haha! and oh do i like em!

I balance a hell of alot easier with these vs back Bulgarians with a bb. way easier. got to work up to wt though. only got 75#x6x/ leg x 4 sets, 85#x5/leg, and initially i had tried 95# but only got about 5/l set. word! i enjoy them

then i didn’t feel like doing anything else. played gym sprite and cleaned up all the unracked weights form the rush hour lamers and called it cardio. streched.

just checked…i’m bending my elbows… i just need to practice and get my flare on i guess :{

but then people bend? bla! also i do the squat as an after thought, its hard for me to get the squat part involved? word. i’m lost.

I’m gonna delurk myself into your log here.

You got me trying the olympic lifts myself (yes, you single handedly). So I watched the Pendlay videos AND have spent way too much time watching the champs do their thing at both the olympics and national meets, not to mention a few college meets. A couple things I noticed:

-Everyone has their own little variation. This surprised me because, for whatever reason, I assumed there was one way to do these things. Some of the champs keep their feet still, some come off the floor, some spread them when they land the snatch, some look more down when they catch it, etc.

-I forget who said it (Rip?), but I do remember someone saying every lifter has a bad habit or two they can’t seem to break, but that they can do well in spite of because they learn to train around it (paraphrased).

-Olympic lifter’s knees almost invariably cave in when they stand their clean up, which freaked me out a little until I realized they all did it.

-These things are hard! I felt like a total spaz the first couple of days playing with them. I feel slightly less so now, but only slightly. I did crack myself right under the jaw with the bar on snatches early on. It was amazing. grin

-Finally, I expected a short/light half-hour or forty-five minute day of olympic lift practice to cut into my regularly scheduled training. I dunno if it’s the lack of any real eccentric work or the explosive nature of the lifts, but they seemed to help if anything. When I start adding ‘weight’ it becomes a totally different story! I think I get mad at myself for being so weak (relative to the champs- that’s fair to me rolls eyes) I do more ‘heavy’ work than I should.

And yes, cute 2-headed dragon is cute. I literally laughed aloud at the little (but fierce looking!) guy.

Keep crushing it and remember the tortoise won; nothing wrong with a waddle in the right direction.

Edit: Don’t forget the pretty looking lifters have been doing it since they were knee-high to a barbell. I have to remind myself of that often.

Hey Brute!! Freaking nice training! I’ll have to try these front loaded BSS - does having the weight in the front do something different then if you load it on the back?

Anywho. First let me say, your snatch looks great!!! What’s the weight on that? 40kgs? You’re so freaking strong!

So here’s my completely noob Oly lifting advice:

First of all when you say that you’re bending your elbows, that’s totally fine! In fact, the bending of the elbows has to happen naturally. You have to remember that your arms are technically supposed to be loose, that is there’s not supposed to be any tension in the arms. This is because your not technically “lifting” the weight overhead, your dropping under it. So imagine that you kick the weight up your body with your hips and then when you extend, the weight moves up your body. When the bar gets as high as it can (because presumably its heavy and can’t go up too high - maybe up to your boobs), you drop under it. Your arms really only do “work” when your “catching” the snatch.

As for the whole swinging out of the bar…hm…i don’t think you want to visualize the lift in those terms. In fact, the bar should kinda graze your body. For example, i know i’m keeping the bar close to my body when I see that my shirt goes up a bit - like i lift my shirt up with the bar. In fact, when I first started lifting my coach made me do a snatch with him like 1/2 a ft away from me and said, “if you hit me, you’re doing it wrong” (and yeah, i almost hit him!)

I hope i’m not confusing girlie!! I’m just trying to impart what little knowledge I get from my coaches to those of you who have the challenge of learning this stuff on your own.

You’re so talented though! So I’m excited for you to get this!! HAH!

ha ha! hey word Kristof! Well good god, I’m glad i didn’t scare you away from it! :{ please feel more then welcome to stop by again and help! i need it! and appreciate all i can get.
this sh@t is WAY HARD …and i’m so impatient because the pretty snatches and stuff are so pretty…sigh…

Masch! really? i sorta got it? Thank you! that makes total sense about the squat because i do think “hoist bar over head” instead of get under and squat it up…hmm! thank you!!

as for the front loaded Bulgarians i just found them on that cool link and got excited to try em. I like front loaded stuff more and more these days because i’m still kinda protective of my back.

but i do feel it in different areas. the back loaded ones are definite glute guys. the front ones i felt in the very lower glute- tippy top hamsting area. they make me smile so far

oh YEAH! I just tried the drop style, ha ha! it feels more snatchy :)!sweet!

So glad that your snatch vid has appeared. I came back to see it. Nice. I know zip about oly, but fun to watch.

I’m gonna have to try the front bulgarians. I have always done them w/DB, but it’s nice to switch it up.

Ha! That’s an awesome way to make the point. I’m going to ask my trainer if she dares…

x2!

Hey lady, would you be interested in letting me dress you some time?

If you’re interested in equipment, I have stuff you can try out. I have a squat suit that would be loose on you, but good for some pop due to your height. And I could wrap your knees.

I must be invited to such an event. I have a 36 shirt you could try.

I want RG to be there if we’re shirting, I don’t trust myself with that crap.

Brute: glad to read you are on the comeback trail. You do seem to be picking up that OLY stuff quick–very nice.

Me too.

You are doing great, though.

I didn’t say anything about the critter… Because (this probably sounds stupid) but I wasn’t sure whether it was a real critter or some weird plastic toy. Is it really for real? That is some freaky shit…

:D! thanks veg! and Deb! thanks Nadia–fingers crossed for the road ahead…i must be careful :{ but i’m feeling better daily

hey PMPM! WHOA! I would love to experiment with equipment! way cool! I have no idea my sizes, but i’m down for dress up party :)! Snap I’d love you to be there too ! maybe we can figure something out after Snap’s meet or whenever

fronties 135x10 x 4 sets
snatches- ha ha! so i tried to do the new and improved dropping under the bar with this initially. i fell on my ass. then i did it the way i did before. i need to practice the drop part, but word.

40.5 kgs x5 or 6 singles. tried to add .5 kg to each side…ended up push pressing it from a snatch grip up.

need to slow down! its astonishing how difficult these lifts are. you’d think 5 pounds is no big deal to add, but obviously it is!! geez!! i gotta keep my training wheels on.

squats bar,135, 185,225 fail? wtf!, then 225 i got fine,245,265. all felt good, all to depth:)! going to try to up it next time. no cardio today, i’ll do it tomorrow
