British Columbia Powerlifting?

Have been a non-competing lifter for some time now. At 35 years old, I would like to at least attempt something. Are there any lifters on here that compete in the IPF evens locally? I certainly do not have high expectations, but perhaps some advice or pointers from someone before I step up.

Was thinking of doing a meet with them once but couldn’t make it.

Hey aallan, there are quite a few CPU (IPF affiliate) lifters on here. Not sure if there are any from BC, the closest I can think of is PowerGnP in Alberta somewhere.

If you’re anywhere around vancouver it looks like there is a meet in February:
(from the website posted)

2011 BC Winter Open
Sunday, February 13, 2011
Performance Works
1218 Cartwright Street, Vancouver
Entry form

I recommend not worrying about what you’ll lift and signing up.

The entry form has a meet contact. The only things I can think of that you’ll need are registering with the CPU (BC Powerlifting can help with this, likely through the Registrar) and as for equipment you can get a singlet and make sure your belt/shoes are legal.

The thing I’ve noticed about the powerlifting community is they are very helpful and always welcome new lifters.

Thanks for the replies. Greatly appreciated.!

Funny timing on this thread because I’ve been want to either participate in that meet or the next one in BCPA.

I played high school football, and have been lifting but not playing since then. Lifting on it’s own is fine but I like having something to train and prepare for. I’ve never done a powerlifting meet before but I want to get involved and this looks like the way to do it.

I’m at 6’1" 205/20 years old and would be looking at about a 1000lb total. I know that’s shits weak compared to real powerlifters out there, but is it absolutely shits weaks for a first meet? If so I won’t do a meet until I hit whatever is a good starting point

Well, I’d say at 20 years old you have nothing to lose. Any total you could get would simply be a starting point for the next meet to better.

Unfortunately, at 35, I’m in a different boat! haha…

I’ve been watching the totals, and I agree; I don’t want to show up and use the other guys warm up bar for my 3rd attempts. But at the same time, bombing would be the worst, so a very conservative-light opening would be needed.

My currents are 445 DL, 295 BP, and 340 squat (yes, I can’t figure out why my squat hasn’t caught up. needs work). I’m just under 200 lbs, so I could probably lean up slightly and go down a class.

If I can get the day off work, I’d like to get some totals in just to say I did. Have you practiced in gear? I don’t use a dead lift suit, but have used a IPF “ok” squat and bench. Not a big difference in the numbers, but i don’t train with them regularly.

Good luck if you go.

I’ve never used any gear - the only exception is I’ll use straps doing rack pulls just to shock the system. No belt, nothing.

I’m going to join up and do it I think. Regardless of the totals, having that focus for training for the next meet, coupled with meeting a bunch of people who can help me excel in the sport would be totally worth it. And the membership fee is cheaper than a bad bar night =P

A long journey begins with a single step (think thats a chinese proverb)

Thanks and right back at ya

Ok. If I can get it off work I’ll let you know, so at least there will be 2 first timer’s there trying to figure it out.

Hmm I might want to give this a shot, I’m 20 also and would also be hoping to total 1000lb.

@WhiteTiger have you competed before? Do you lift at UBC by any chance?

Nope I go to school at BCIT and lift at home. My brother works at UBC though haha

You guys should all do it! Don’t worry about being competitive with the others (who are likely in gear anyway). Compete with yourself, and after this meet you have a number to try to beat in your next one. A few years of beating your previous bests and you’ll be the lifter that new lifters are worried about measuring up to! People at meets are really supportive, especially to first-time competitors.

Before the meet, make sure you learn the rules and practice the commands (these sound simple, but people get nervous/excited and mess them up on the platform all the time).

I’ll hopefully be there at the Winter Open - It’ll be my first meet as well, so it’s good to see that there will be some other first-timers there…

I’m coming over from the Island - anyone on here from Victoria?
