Bringing 5/3/1 to Powerful Women

Pretty cool that you’ve basically tailored your workout. Also interested to see how it goes with your veggie diet.

I made the mistake of working out without my sheet (thought I was going to workout tomorrow, ended up doing it after work tonight).

Did this:

Squat: 3x6 150lbs
Leg press:3x8 180lbs, 200lbs, 210lbs
Barbell reverse lunges: 4x6, 85lbs, 65lbs, 65lbs, 65lbs
Step-ups: 2x12 15lb DBs on 20inch box, 22.5 DBs 20inch box
plank holds: 3x1min

The earth-shattering realization gleaned from this workout is that everything is harder after squats.

Also, I started my 5-6 day a week yoga practice on Monday and today I had several people tell me I’m looking really tight. I’m pretty sure the hour and fifteen minutes of lactic acid burning per day might have something to do with that.

Starting creatine today. I have 2 gram creatine monohydrate + 500mg glutamine tabs (I get a nice fatty discount on these through my work so it’s barely a drop in the bucket for me to obtain a six month supply). I’m planning on loading for the first week with 18g per day, and then switching over to an indefinite 4g per day.

The biggest reason I’m using it is admittedly curiosity, with a close second being the line of reason that a low-meat diet has been shown to result in lower creatine stores. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Hm. Creatine. Interesting.

Might work well with the veggie diet. What do you expect?

I don’t think you are gonna see a bit of difference.

I hope you aren’t saying that based on your own experience with taking creatine + a diet packed with meat.

I expect that it might help me manage a few more reps at the end than I normally would be capable of. At this point I would be happy with the placebo effect.

I took it this morning with breakfast and coffee before my workout. I’m not sure whether it was the coffee or what, but I felt like I could bust through a wall before starting the workout. It was similar to taking NO2 (did that once, and I am WAY too sensitive for that stuff. It felt like my skin was burning off). On the last rep of my dips, I was shaking so hard that it felt like I was about to come apart. Pretty sure it’s the placebo effect, but it’s fun nonetheless (from everything I’ve read it’s too early in the cycle to be benefiting from the creatine).

Here’s what happened today:

OHP-
60x4 65x3 70x2 64x4 70x3 75x2<<<This last set felt harder than the times I’ve done this weight with the 531 program, I’m guessing due to the other reps at similar weight

Wide-grip pullups: 6, 6, 5&1/2, 4

Bar dips: 15, 15, 13

Face Pulls:
30x8
40x8
50x8

Leg overs: 3x20

In other news, I’m officially pissed off with the corporate, looks-centered gym I work at. They just hired a new trainer. He happens to be over 6 feet tall, has legs skinner than mine (his goal for the last year has been to get stronger…so there’s no endurance sport to blame the tininess on), and, get this, he was just voted the “sexiest trainer in the city”. How did he obtain this status so quickly as a trainer? Well, he’s a stripper.

To summarize:

  1. Doesn’t practice what he preaches
  2. Terrible form
  3. Is getting clients because he’s a stripper and has a skinny, punk-rock look to him

Sometimes it makes me want to give up on trying to be good. It just doesn’t seem to pay off like looks do.

Is this Seattle? I read the Stranger because it’s a cool paper, not because I have any connection to the city, and I saw a “Sexiest Trainer” who looked pretty much as you described. Had the same reaction.

First of all, who would find the guy credible? He just can’t be that strong.

Second, although I suppose it’s as worthy a kind of vanity as any, I’m not crazy about people who train to be skinny. I think it’s simply not very impressive for a thinnish person to do some cardio and get thinner. (I’m impressed with overweight people who make body transformations, but that’s a completely different task.)

Luckily, at my gym, those people are segregated in the cardio room, and the weight room denizens are either pretty strong or earnest newbs.

Yep, it was the guy in the Stranger. The last conversation I had with him was 6 months ago when I asked him to time a crossfit workout for me. According to him, at that point he hadn’t worked out for about a month, wasn’t really paying attention to diet, and was having trouble working out at all “due to life”.

Sadly, he doesn’t even train to be skinny. It’s more a result of not training. Even more devestating- I’ve learned from working at this gym that people find confidence to be the most credible thing about a trainer. You can train people like shit, and as long as you strut while you do it, pay attention to their moods, and make them feel like something might happen, they’ll pay you thousands of dollars.

Where are you located, Alisa, if you don’t mind me asking (you can PM me the answer if you want).

Yep, I am.

I notice a difference between when I supplement with creatine and when I “cycle” off of it for a few weeks, but I eat meat maybe once, twice a day, and some days I don’t have any meat.

Today was a fantastic day in the world of lifting and boobs.

To cover the lifting:

Deadlift:
160x5
180x3
200x5 (new weight! Have never been able to lift 200 before, let alone for 5!)

leg curl:
8x70
8x70
5x70 <Now this is weird because I’ve previously curled 115x8 no prob. I’m chalking it up to the deadlift max and months off of leg curl.

glute ham raise:
10
10
10 This isn’t the regular glute ham, it’s modified because my gym doesn have one.

Single leg moving bridge with weight:
25x12 (way too easy)
45 (held in DB form over the moving side)x 12 (very hard)

Ab wheel rollouts on knees all the way to flat on ground:
15
12
12

And now on to boobs. As part of Vday I went into Victoria Secret with my bf and tried on a couple things, including a new bra they have that makes you 2 sizes larger than you already are. If you recall earlier in this log, I have always felt that clothes would fit/look better if I was a little larger on top. As it turns out, this is REALLY REALLY not the case. Large boobs make me look like an entirely different, much thicker and more squat person. The boyfriend, who is painfully honest, agreed with me. It’s nice to realize that what you have is actually doing a lot for you.

Congrats on the PR!

On bras: I actually like the absurdly “helpful” Victoria’s Secret bras, but as you said, it’s nice to appreciate what you’ve got.

OMG! I tried on that bra too - looked hilarious on me. I’m all for cleavage, but that was insanity.

At any rate, I’ve had huge issues with my boobs since starting to lift. They happen to be the only things that seem to get smaller! So I started taking boobie pills. Natural herb pills that are supposed to make your boobs bigger. LOL! Not sure if they’re working yet, takes some time for the phytoestrogens to kick in i think - but they seem fuller…

I went to my doc for a check up and to get his ok on the pills. He basically blinked twice and then facepalmed but said, go for it. Ha! I’ll show you doc!

Over in the T-Vixen thread we have many experienced professionals, including myself, that can determine whether this boobie pill is working or not.

so sad about that trainer dude…

I mean I’m all for looking like that part, but I sincerely want to HELP people…If someone like that ended up in my gym, I don’t think he’d be taken to all that well…

And I’d be beyond pissed if he was hogging all the new clients, if he didn’t really care…

I’m still trying to build myself up! Last thing I need is a punk kid stealing my thunder, haha!

Masch: just remember that the pills that “might work” for the boobs will work on a hormonal level so don’t be suprised if the bodyfat increases in areas like thighs and hips too. The hormones won’t target 1 specific bodypart (like fat loss cannot target specific body parts) Just my 2 cents.

ooh! good point N.

IMO, for the lean athletic look, smaller boobs look MUCH sexier. If I could trade for some perky A’s or B’s without surgery I would in a second. I’ve been self-conscious and disliked my boobs since the 8th grade. The grass is always greener!

As for with clothes on, if you have a significant chest, it can be a challenge to wear clothes that aren’t snugly fitted without looking bulky. Clothes have to be fitted around the waist to get rid of the illusion that you’re thick around the middle also. If you have a short torso, it gets even trickier. Then try to dress modestly without looking fatter than you are. There’s a reason clothes models have small chests.

LOL! Deb, I just saw your boobies in T-vixen - they’re amaaaazing! I would give a kidney for what you got. But yeah, the grass is always greener.

N, you’re totally right - and I’m still waiting to see what kind of freak show I might create with these pills. I’m assuming if I just stop taking them hormones will return back to normal and all changes will go away, including my GIANT breastses.
