Braves-Brewers Brawl

Any body else see this? Thoughts?

While I think there is a lot of overreaction to the “don’t watch your homerun” unspoken rule, this one deserved a punch in the mouth. Why Freddie Freeman or Gerald Laird got ejected is beyond me though. Reed Johnson was the one only Brave I saw that I thought would be gone, and Gomez the only Brewer.

It was much less a brawl vs a pile up. But I agree - the ejections of freeman and laird seem wrong.

Yeah, brawl is kind of a misnomer. I really wanted McCann to lay him out or Johnson to stick with that blitz attack he had going there.

This is my favorite Braves team in a long time. They have passion.
Gomez should have been out for not touching home.

My thoughts in no particular order:

  1. The baseball etiquette 'thou shall not ‘mire your jacks’ is stupid. That was an epic blast that should be admired.
  2. If I was a pro baseball player I would never admire my jacks because I hate getting hit by pitches and those guys throw 95 fricking miles per hour.
  3. I didn’t see Gomez do anything to get kicked out. Guys were coming at him and I didn’t see him throw any punches.
  4. Did they count the HR? He didn’t touch home plate and I never saw the score change.
  5. The way Gomez’s teammates were holding him back reminds me of how much I hate it when someone holds me back when someone’s coming after me. Teammates who prevent you from defending yourself need to get a clue.

I think they would have to count the run. He didn’t touch home plate, but it was blocked by a player without the ball.

Side note - Selig announced retirement.

Pretty classless by Gomez. I can understand being pissed about being hit intentionally but that was a few months ago and you didn’t do anything then so shut your mouth and run the bases.

Was the hit earlier in the year intentional??

I think teams can be a little over zealous with the don’t admire your homerun rule, but like I said, the taunting as he ran around was the only big deal here. The umps apparently said that Freeman was ejected because he hit a Brewer in the face with an elbow when he ran into the pile. Laird was ejected for continuing to yell after being warned. The only punches thrown missed and that was between Gomez and Reed Johnson.

I love how the bullpen guys come in just out of obligation.

He should have trucked that catcher for being a douche.

I disagree with you their. A punch in the mouth from the catcher or a 95er at the jaw should have been his fate for running that mouth. If you have struck out 6 times in a series what the hell do you have to really talk about anyway.

The catcher should not have blocked the plate like he did, it’s fine if they want to throw down and talk shit whatever.

I saw that video this AM. I don’t really follow baseball but I feel like that whole ordeal was stupid. He literally watched teh ball for all of 5 seconds before he started to run the bases. The catcher said something when he first came up to the plate and the pitcher or catcher shouted at him and then he started jawing back after he started making the rounds. The only thing that I noted that validated getting upset would be the shit talking while running the bases but staring at your glorious homerun for ~5 seconds doesn’t warrant that.

It’s not about ‘watching’ the homerun, he only did that for a second or two. It’s about the fact that he ran his mouth at Maholm while circling the bases. THAT is the part that caused Freeman and McCann to react the way they did. THAT is the part that makes Gomez a shitbag.

Also, if he had such a problem with being hit a by pitch from 3 months ago, why didn’t he deal with it then? Was it a big deal or not?

I submit that if he hits the bomb, looks for a second or three, and then runs the bases like a professional who has done this before, McCann doesn’t even take it as far as he did with Fernandez. That is to say nothing at all happens other than the Braves (Barves?) are down 1-0.

For those of you saying watching your home run shot is not a big deal, do you consider a blatant disrespect of the opposing team and a lack of sportsmanship no big deal? Because that is what watching your home run ball is considered in baseball. Gomez knew exactly what he was doing and exactly the message he was trying to deliver to the Braves without actually saying anything when he watched that ball.

I just watched it again, with sound this time. Clearly the catcher & 1st baseman started it. Gomez just reacted to them. Sure he “mired” his blast but not to a degree to anywhere near warrant that reaction. Those Braves players completely over reacted. Can’t believe that catcher didn’t get tossed. He was the biggest instigator.

From what I saw on SC the hit earlier in the season was intentional and at his knees . So I can understand I mean getting hit by a 90+ MPH there’s the serious possibility of injury but still have some class.

He didn’t even watch his homerun that long before they started talking shit…fuck the braves

No bigger pussies in all of sports than baseball players, and I’m a huge baseball fan. Waaaa he’s watching his home run waaaaaaa. The Braves like to run their mouths at people and can’t handle when it comes back at them, so they act like crybaby pussies.

Lost in all of this is that the Braves managed a meager two hits all night. In this game, and in the prior 20, are hitting an anemic .204. First round sweep in playoffs, anyone?
