Boxing... Eccentric-Less?

CT, Would punching a bag be considered as Eccentric-less training?

How would you adapt this into training? 3 explosive blows then rest, 3 more, rest & continue…?

Thoughts??

And the point of doing this would be what? If it’s for a recovery workout there are better options imo.

  1. It’s not really eccentric-less because when you hit the bag you have to absorb a force rebound, which is a reactive eccentric and isometric combo

  2. It will do nothing to improve growth. There is more to eccentric-less’ efficacy than simply being eccentric-less. The load/force to produce must reach a certain intensity threshold and hitting a bag will not allow you to reach that. You’ll simply burn fuel and tire out.

And what about short boxing combos with dumbbells (just punching the air)? Would they be more like eccentric less training?

I used to do them, as well as different kicking techniques using weights too. This training helps me a lot with mi Kickboxing technique and explosiveness when fighting. They have a positive metabolic impact as well.

I was thinking about mixing it in a circuit with more specific eccentric-less exercises with recovery purposes, but if it does not going to help to recover I would move them to another session.

How different do you think these combos are from eccentric-less training?

Thanks TC, great job…

CT, Thanks for taking the time to answer my question.

I REALLY hate loaded punching and kicking. I hate to break it to you, but even though you might THINK that they are helping, they are not. If anything they can screw up your motor pattern. One of those ‘‘traditions’’ that should be forgotten if you ask me.

well there would be a lot of eccentric action going on anyway since the motion is not ballistic (going thrtough an end motion) your muscles would be doing an eccentric contraction when reaching the end of the punch unless you plan on ripping your shoulder out of its socket

These practices are finally beginning to die out in boxing. Took f’n long enough, but I think the trainers are realizing that it doesn’t do shit to increase your power, and what it really does is destroy your technique and put a lot of strain on the joints.

Very rarely do I say this, because I think that if you want to do something, watch what the pros do and emulate it- but they succeed in spite of this type of training.

Yeah I have also noticed this too. The load of the dumbbells or wrist weight not acting as a resistance in the punching direction in most case and I feel it could actually make u slower in th the long run. But I think using bands may help in increasing punching speed imo, especially during speed punching drills. Sry if i hijack this tread
