I didn’t call you a hater, but I do think pointing out that Denzel doesn’t have much range…as if everyone else does, is ridiculous. Most actors DON’T have much range. Range doesn’t mean someone’s acting is good.

Johhny Dep is quite possibly one of my favorite actors but even he doesn’t have much range. he is just very good at playing off the wall characters to a degree that people think this means he has range. The truth is, he hasn’t played but a few “normal” roles since he was on 21 Jump Street and Nightmare on Elmstreet.

Exactly,
and Pacino and DeNiro as well. People praise them as actors, justifiably, but they have no range. Same character, different movie. [/quote]

If it is justifiable that they get praise, what are you bitching about? Very few actors on the planet have significant range to play any part and be unrecognizable…and even then it depends on the movie and the character.

Most people didn’t recognize Eric Bana in Star trek…and it isn’t like his make up was done in a way to obscure his face. Some might say Brad Pitt has some range, but in truth he does the same schizo act to different degrees as his only “range”.

Bruce Willis may have some range considering how he was in Death Becomes Her to Die Hard, but who is really acting on a level where you simply do not recognize them in different parts?

And further, why are people so damn picky when it comes to this topic as if they don’t get that certain actors are chosen for certain parts because of the strengths of the actor and not because one guy can play everybody?

Hell, if that is the case, then Eddy Murphy has the most “range”.

I am really interested in who you think has so much “range”.

The crazy religious lady in the Mist has range but again that is only to a degree.[/quote]

I just reread what you wrote, and I’m not sure what you mean by “Very few actors on the planet have significant range to play any part and be unrecognizable”. Of course they’re recognizable. That’s how people recognize them? It’s also how they recognize that they [Denzel] play basically the same character in every movie. I like Denzel as an actor [Ricochet baby!] but he plays every role the exact same way. He’s not a very diverse actor, but he is talented.

I actually didn’t use that term, I just said he plays the same character in every flick regardless of role. I don’t think that can be disputed. I also wasn’t trying to single Denzel out, 'cause he’s quite good at the character he plays, and people know him [and are used to] that. I agree about Depp also. To me someone that can play a variety of roles and play each role individually is someone like Gary Oldman. That dude’s a chameleon.

Name one actor who completely transforms themselves when they take a role? I know only one and that’s Daniel Day Lewis.

I don’t have the debating skills of Prof.X, so I’ll keep my comments short:

Denzel is great. Watch Book of Eli. White Flash, stop being a hater.

I meant exactly what I wrote.

For instance, if the very first time you EVER heard of Heath Ledger was when he was playing the Joker, would you even recognize it was the same guy if you happened to be watching Brokeback mountain? I haven’t even seen the second movie but I’ve seen enough clips on other shows and the internet to see that his acting was COMPLETELY DIFFERENT and his look changed drastically enough that you probably would ignore it was the same guy.

That is what I mean by being UNRECOGNIZABLE in a part due to acting and overall look.

Few actors can pull that off. That is why I mentioned Eric Bana, because even the director noted that he kept getting calls from people asking if that was really him in Star Trek…because the character he played was drastically different than other characters he had played before.

That is about the only way you could truly judge “range” in acting. Otherwise, it is simply the same actor being himself in a different role with slight tweeks on his own personality.

In fact, I would go as far as to say that someone like Ledger who can turn into someone else on screen probably has some mental instability issues that go along with that ability to lose themselves in a role.

To me Ldger was a helluva an actor 'cause he did something so different from what he was known for, and he hit it outta the park. His role in Brokeback [which I’ve never seen] was also out of the norm for him. I also think that if he were still alive his role as the Joker would’ve catapulted him to the top of Hollywood food chain. I’ll take this “In fact, I would go as far as to say that someone like Ledger who can turn into someone else on screen probably has some mental instability issues…” a step further. Any grown up that gets paid millions of dollars to PRETEND - no matter how skillfully - probably has a screw or two loose. I’m not saying Denzel needs to play a gay cowboy or wear disfiguring make-up to enhance what he’s doing. He doesn’t need to do anything. He’s one of the best at what he does, and I enjoy his movies for the most part. He’s just the same guy in everything he does.

You really think so? That’s an honest question. I don’t know if DDL could’ve played a one eyed, murderous pimp with a track in the ghetto. I think DDL probably gets deeper into his roles, but I think Oldman is as skilled .

Just making sure.

Denzel doesn’t need to change his style or his range. His style of acting has gotten him to a point where people write scripts based around him. And its been like that for a decade. The man can pick and choose his roles.

He’s proved himself with Glory, Malcolm X, Mo Better Blues, Soldier’s Story, and Training day(his first real bad guy role). And probably Philadelphia, but I didn’t watch it. I’d much rather him play the same bad ass character then take the role of a retard with a heart of gold or the sympathetic comic relief.

Deniro and Al Pacino proved themselves in the 70’s and 80’s. Denzel proved himself in the 80’s and 90’s. Let Robin Williams and Kevin Spacey try to get on their level.

Now go see the fucking “Book of Eli”. I’m getting tired of telling you people.

Black people were crying racism that it was a white person saving the other planet in Avatar. Funny, no white people are saying anything about Denzel saving the world. Also found in funny that the Vatican got in on the deeper meaning of the movie Avatar.

As stated earlier, it’s a movie and shouldn’t be looked at for anything more than entertainment, no hidden messages just entertainment.

Good day for me. Didn’t know I was going to get your little X panties all in a wad.
My statement was clear. Most Denzel, Pacino, DeNiro characters are retreads. They are virtually the same character, different film. Why did I say justifiably? This is why
They are one trick ponies, but they do that trick marvelously. They own it. They can play that one character to a tee. That is why comics can do just great impressions of them as well.

Who has range? Well, lets see. I have watched several Russell Crowe movies, playing characters from LA detectives, to gladiators, to brilliant, schizophrenic mathematician. Great characters. Each its own creation. Johnny Dept. That is a man with range. Pirate, gangster, Willy Wonka, you name it. Leonardo Decaprio. That kid can do it all. Hell, Jimm can go from talking with his ass in one movie, and jerking tears in the next.
How’s that for a few?
