Bodybuilding With No Thyroid

I found out recently that I got Thyroid Papillary Cancer. Thyroid has to be removed. I’m going to be thyroid hormone replacement therapy the rest of my life to suppress TSH secretion by the pituitary. Anyone successfully bodybuilding with no thyroid here?

Damn, dude. Good luck. I commend you for your positive attitude, and looking to continue training despite your hardships. You seriously just inspired me to train harder.

Sorry I don’t have any info about your specific situation, but i’m sure you will succeed in your endeavors. Once again, good luck man.

I had thyroid cancer. I had mine removed in June of 2007. It had spread to the lymph nodes on the right side, which is why my scar goes to my ear.

I train with out it. Its not much different, except certain supplements like HOT-ROX don’t work.

Once your Synthroid level is figured out, you should be good.

Wow, tough luck…I’m guessing you have pills etc that you have to take? My grandma had hers thyroid taken out as well and thats what she takes.

As for bodybuilding, to be completely honest, I think careful insulin management is going to be the order of the day. Also, I’d say to take most of the food timing/quantity info with a pinch of salt and go by body’s satiety/starvation signals.
Maybe you could manipulate your thyroid meds to regulate your BMR with your intake

EDIT: The guy above makes my simultaneous post void

I haven’t had any problems with food.

I gain weight with about the same amount of calories I did before, and had no problem last summer losing 13 pounds on the V-Diet.

The most important thing is having a good endocrinologist and seeing him frequently once your Synthroid treatment has started. You want to get your levels right as soon as possible to keep from gaining/losing weight.

I am 20, I am not sure how old you are. If you’re older, it may be harder.

Thanks for the support guys.

I’m 32. I’ve been training seriously for two years and can bench my weight and nearly squat/deadlift twice my weight. Except for some fat around the waist, I’m lean all over. Always have been. So, no need for HOT-ROX. Intervals 2-3x a week have always worked to lean me out.

DOHCrazy, have you considered Armour? I figure that if I play it right during the dosing trial and error phase, that I’ll gain mass when I’m hypo and lean out when I’m hyper.

Right now, I’m pounding my body with a low rep high set German Volume Training based routine up until the day I need to start my pre-op prep.

Post-op, I’m banned from heavy lifting for about 4 weeks. After that, the doc says I can go all out.

I don’t have much information except some knowledge of my uncle. He was born without a thyroid and he takes thyroid medication in place of it. It was actually not known at the time of his birth that he didn’t have a thyroid gland so he suffered brain damage and as a result he is mentally retarded.

One thing that I notice about him is that he lives a fairly sedentary lifestyle, and can eat an upwards of 5k+ calories daily and not gain any weight. I asked my late father about this and he said it had to do with his thyroid medication. Not sure on the accuracy of this statement. My uncle doesn’t carry alot of LBM but he’s terribly vascular, especially in his arms. That’s about all I know. Good luck with your surgery!
