What causes some people to feel bloated and foggy while eating certain ways. The way jetlagger feels eating low carb is how I feel eating anything but low carb. What causes this?
It’s a very diverse and complicated topic including digestion, hormones of all sorts, electrolytes, genetics and lifestyle as well as countless others but to make it rather simple a lot of it has to do with your digestive system and how well and how fast you break down food and release food as energy. Really your situation is probably a lot more common in that a higher carb diet causes you to retain fluid, water etc. Some of this has to do with insulin levels and some probably has to do with not tolerating a grain based diet all that well.
I wonder if food alergies could be playing a role here in jetlagger’s case?
Paul, I’m beginning to think that may be true. That and possibly Candida. Although from everything I’ve read Candida can cause the allergies. And the Chanko meals do contain foods that are the most non-allergenic (never heard of anyone having a rice allergy, although I suppose it’s possible). So I’m going to up my organic yogurt intake as well as get on some yeast fighters. That and work on some other Chanko recipies.
Yeah allergies can play a really huge part as well. Doesn’t the chanko diet contain corn? Along with dairy and wheat corn is 1 of the 3 biggest food allergens. Regarding the candida what do you plan on using to treat that?
Kelly, do you have any suggestions on how I can make my digestive system work faster? I eat small meals and drink plenty of water with each meal and this helps some however I was wondering if anything else can be done to help speed things up? Thanks
Kelly, I plan on really nailing down the diet, supplementing with the yogurt and additional acidophilus, and trying yeast fighters. Something seems to be affecting my absorption of sugar big time. 3 different doctors didn’t help either, and that route gets very expensive. I know with Candida I need to avoid sugars as it feeds off of that. Regarding diet, if I eat cleanly with say a 30/60/10 diet (pro, carbs, fat) I feel better than low carb, but I still don’t feel well with say a “clean mind”. Amazingly, the other day I cheated and ate a bunch of simple sugars and nothing else. I felt pumped to the gills, and I was clear and as sharp as a tack. (well, sharp for ME anyway). So for some strange reason, I’m absorbing simple sugars well, but when I eat good clean carbs, regardless of the amount I don’t feel well, as if they’re not being processed. Obviously I can’t go on a high sugar diet, so I’m stumped for the moment. Any ideas?
jetlagger it’s really hard to say what’s going on but i suspect it is not just digestive problems but also something related to thyroid, adrenals, or blood sugar balance. I think the important thing is to establish a baseline diet of totally non-allergenic foods and beverages only for some sample foods see http://bcn.net/~stoll/archives /bob/b021998.html#elimination (and from there try to figure out what precise foods or beverages are causing the problem.) To speed up the digestive system I recommend HCL acid, enzymes, fiber acidophilus, and mct oil as well as any form of exercise which speeds up the metabolism preferably done in twice a day segments. However, one of the big problems with this is often it is the entire system that needs to be speeded up and not just the digestive system. Try taking a potent thermogenic like MD6 and if this improves the situation then you know it is more complex then just changing food choices and you’ll most likley need to address this through some form of medical intervention.
Also I am curious as to how you feel if you drink a cup of coffee with nothing else? There is a book called “Biobalance” that details dietary recommendations based upon acid/alkaline balances. Although I don’t agree with everything the author says he has had a great deal of success with it in treating all types of illness. Based upon this theory an individual like yourself would have an alkaline metabolism and need to consume acidic foods in order to balance out. This could possibly explain why plain sugar would leave you feeling pleasant as sugar is acid producing as is coffee, vinegar and most salad vegetables (lettuce, etc.) along with fasting and a whole host of other foods.
Thanks for the link Kelly, I’ll be starting the elimination diet tomorrow. Wish me luck, those symptoms sound pretty dreadful. But if they do become present, it does make you think just how bad some foods are for you to cause such inflamatory responses. I’ll keep you posted on that if you’re interested.
As for the coffee, I generally feel about the same after having a cup, not much difference.
Now that you’ve got me addicted to Dr. Stoll’s site, what is your impression of “Primal Defense”? Is this the fiber acidophilus you recommended? I read a pretty convincing article on there that went into great deal about why oral ingestion of acidophilus gets destroyed. Any thoughts?
Thanks again for your input, I’ll beat this thing yet.
The idea behind primal defense was to develop a probiotic that would be more capable of being utilized and surviving digestion. It’s kind’ve like a superprobiotic and is quite expensive. I have a good friend who owns a health food store and he swears it was the main factor in curing a wide variety of ailments he had…and this was after he had used many of the other common probiotics on the market. You might try doing a search on primal defense to see what you come up with. Best of luck!
Thanks Kelly, I may just give it a try as all the feedback i’m getting on it seems to be similar to your friend’s. Thanks for the info!
