Bike Cross-Country, Maintain Upper Body?

Just like the title says, this summer I’m going with a group of other people from my college for 2 months (May 25th till July 27th), biking 4,000 miles from Baltimore, MD to San Francisco, CA.

I have a few worries. I know the trip will help me as far as cutting down (biking 100 miles each day just about), and get me a nice lower body, but I don’t want to lose the upperbody strength/size I have gained over the last few months. How do you guys suggest combatting this?

I am definately going to get a 2 month supply of protein powder, protein bars, and whatever other supplements you guys recommend, but what else should I do?

I’m not worrying about the lower body since after doing this, I should have a much better lower body then I do now!

ya’ll staying in hotels? they might have some weights, do what you can. if not push ups, pull ups from a sturdy tree, set up 2 chairs to do dips, load up a duffle bag with some semi heavy shit and you can do front raises and lateral raises, you could rig up some isometric stuff from like the bars on the hotel balcony or a tree.

definately not ideal, but better than nothing. you just have to be creative if you’re in a situation where you are unable to access weights. the stuff above is just a quick list off the top of my head, just use your imagination.

To be perfectly honest: I think it’s gonna be a very very rough trip if you have to ride 100 miles a day and do extra physical workout in the evenings/afternoons.

One of my friends just completed a solo bicycle trip from Copenhagen, over Stockholm in Sweden, Helsinki in Finland and all the way down the old East states and Russia to Teheran in Iran. I can sure as hell assure you that he wasn’t able to do extra workouts. Granted, that trip is a lot harder because the terrain is rougher and there isn’t any proper roads to ride on, but still…

I think your best bet would be to hope for good muscle memory and then train it up fast after your trip.

Edit: Oh btw, check out my post here and follow the link in the buttom to a program where you use your body weight. Might be something you can use: http://www.T-Nation.com/tmagnum/readTopic.do?id=1943700

they feed us around 5,000 calories per day. I will be around 145 lean by the time the trip starts (May 25th) (the way things are looking), and hopefully I can get up to 150 before school begins in September.

I’m going to be packing a lot of protein bars, protein drinks, stuff like that, and hope that the 5,000+ other calories would allow me to put on some muscle.

sorry for lack of response, I never got an e-mail saying I had responses, thought I had none! Thanks for the advice
