What’s soccer?
To be honest, this is’nt even the biggest upset in football (to give it it’s proper name) let alone sport. Whilst it was a great result for the US, the reality is that they were playing against players who have just finished their domestic seasons and have one eye on their summer holidays.
The tournament is a joke and im sure your average American does not give a crap about the confederations cup. As for success in next years world cup? Don’t get ahead of yourselves.
Why all the hate on football? Don’t hate it just because your “supposed to” hate it. I can agree that sometimes it can be a bit boring to watch on TV, but try playing a bit yourself, it’s really a lot of fun and requires technique, coordination, teamplay, stamina and speed. There’s a reason it’s the most popular sport in the world, don’t be so narrow minded and go try something new ![]()
I love soccer. I’ve never had as much fun as chasing a ball around a dusty field in the early morning in Cidade Baixa (Salvador, BA Brasil for you gringos). They take that shit serious as cancer. Good times.
I was actually in Brazil for the last World Cup and it was electric. EVERYTHING stopped when Brazil played a game. When they even came close to making a goal you would have thought World War III started. Anything that gets an entire nation of people to stop whatever it is they’re doing and cluster in front of the TV (with lots of food and cerveja, natch) in rapt fascination is worth paying attention to. I shouted myself hoarse whenever the Americans played and I didn’t even know what I was looking at.
I have no idea why Americans widely regard football (soccer) as a pussy sport. Some of the worst injurys period have came from this sport not to mention some of the most skilled kickers in the world. I know American Football or fancy pants rugby to give it its real name has good kickers but football has some of the most skilled individuals in the world. Look up Ronaldo, Messi, Henry… There are many more, if the largest names you know are Beckham whilst he is a great player he’s very far from being the best in the world.
The majority of the world are very passionate about football and it really goes to show how big it is considering it is an international game which lets face it American Football isn’t outside of North America. Also the amount of money in the game is outstanding. Recently a player has moved clubs for £80m that’s $130mil.
So maybe there is more to this sport than you realise. Oh yeah also when you next call it a pussy sport look up the film green street starring elijah wood. It’s about football hooliganism. Or just type those last two words in on google or youtube. You will soon see how much of a pussy sport it really is.
Thankyou thankyou.

I am so proud of being an American right now. Our team beat Spain the number 1# ranked team in the world which had piled up a record 15 game winning streak and had not lost since 2006!!
This will be considered one of the greatest upset,If not, the greatest upset in sports history(Similar to miracle on Ice)
Now there off to the Final, presumably against Brazil !!! wow. Even if you’re not a soccer fan, You got to be proud of the U.S soccer team. I mean damn, Its Like a college team beating the Lakers. They have to have big balls and even bigger heart to do that. USA!! USA!!!
Also, this is no where near the Miracle on Ice. We were playing a pro team who was a hated rival. It was USA vs communism. The country was down. There was so much more than a soccer game no one cared about.

Easy bro. It’s soccer. Fucking soccer. C’mon.
And this mentality is gonna change with this victory.
Not really. I just don’t like soccer and I think so many Americans feel the same way. I’m 45 and I’ve been hearing how soccer is the next big thing from when I was 10 or younger.
a couple more wins like these and a good performance in the wc and things will change. If the U.S starts winning, people will watch.
No they won’t because we think it’s boring. Like weightlifting, strongman, etc. We like the sports we like. It’s not do to winning or lack of it.
In fact we don’t win, because we don’t really care.

Has anyone here in the USA that grew up B.M.V. (Before Mini Vans) ever even played soccer?
I remember in junior high in the early 70s we had it in P.E. class a couple times and all we ended up doing was putting the ball on a tee and kicking it through the football goalposts (that would be American football goalposts to you furriners).
Hahaha! We just did not have a soccer ball. We had kickballs which we used to play kickball and we played baseball, basketball, and football.

I find it boring. Football, the real football, has strategy, controlled collisions, great athleticism, team play, and speed soccer cannot understand. It also has that coordination stuff, you know, because we use our hands.
It’s the most popular sport in the world because any brokeass can kick some gourd around or old donkey skull.

We call it a pussy sport for a few reasons. 1. If you play it in this country instead of football, the pussy label might apply. 2. the flopping around and pretending you were fouled. Only punters are allowed to do that or the place kicker in this country. And most football players will think they’re kind of like pussies. Might not be fair to say, but kickers are looked at differently.
- We don’t care. In this country soccer is considered so wonderful by people that a lot of regular joes get annoyed at. Mini van driving moms that think football is barbaric and soccer is so much more evolved. People who guys like me don’t think of as being sport’s fans.
I will agree you can get hurt in soccer. I will agree playing it might be fun. But i’s boring as piss to watch.
I will watch the following before soccer. 1. college football. 2. NFL. 3. Baseball. 4. Nascar 5. NBA 6. Tennis 7. Golf 8. old highlights of College or NFL. and in no particular order, women’s BB , lifting events on TV, Track and Field, poker tournaments, ice skating, gymnastics, other boring olympic sports, The Golden Girls, Chick Flicks, The Gilmore Girls, and old reruns of The Land Of The Lost.
Boring.
I thought Americans only played and supported Sports that no other Country in the World ( Except maybe Canada ) Played ? Like American Football , Basketball , Baseball , Ice Hockey etc … LOL at least that way America can claim to be " World Champions " In something or other. Let’s see how far the Mighty States get in the Competetion …

Now, I am probably the only englishman onb earth who hates football. But calling that boring compared to american football, where you can make 60 minutes of play last 3 hours or so? At least it thankfully only lasts its alloted 90 minutes.

Where did I say that football(soccer) is the only sport where these skills are needed? Why does it have to be american football vs. real football(yes I said it :D) all the time? I enjoy watching the NFL too…
to be honest I don’t care who likes a sport or not, just stop calling it soccer.
Do we still have Beckham?

LOL, you guys need to pass me some of what you’re smoking. The world doesn’t care about American Football; the world DOES care about Soccer, though. So the world will remember, whether America does or not.
The U.S. doesn’t care what sports the rest of the world cares about. We don’t try to fit in.

That’s funny I thought Russia, Sweden and the Czechs all played some very good hockey as well. Jagr left the NHL to finish his career over there. They all do well in the olympics too.
No but really you’re absolutely right Japan, Cuba, and Taiwan really don’t care about baseball. I guess the real sport is soccer for them too?
Basketball too. You know I don’t ever remember anyone outside the U.S. playing in the NBA. I mean there are some weird names like Nowitzki, Ming, Ginobili that I’ve seen. But they’re all U.S. guys right?
And to say the U.S. plays those sports to be called “World Champions”, you know you hit that nail right on the head too. Not like the U.S. rakes in medals at the Olympics.

No one else in the world plays golf either. NFL Europe anyone?
Look I think it’s fine that we did good. I’m still not going to watch soccer. I played a little bit of AYSO in HS and did a couple indoor leagues, but I really can’t stand to watch it on tv. I would play a pickup game, but thats about it.
