Biggest Loser

I’m not offended by your view but I disagree w/ you Salty.

I think looking pain and death in the face and fighting it to the end can certainly be very heroic. Often the battle is fought without a murmur of complaint. Many people fight it to be there for a child or spouse who does not want to see them go yet.

Peace be with you

I agree that losing weight isn’t “heroic.” But he implied that losing weight is not an accomplishment. Here’s his quote:

“If the fat fucks didnt let themselves get so obese in the first place and remained average weight then thats more of a accomplishment in my opinion.”

If people didn’t get fat they wouldn’t need to lose weight - well, duh!

The reasons why people gain weight are way too many to list. Sometimes it’s laziness or another lame reason, no question.

And perhaps you think that every reason for gaining weight is lame, and that’s fine. But these people realized they needed to do something about it and are doing something about it as opposed to buying a scooter and riding around the buffet stuffing their faces even more. I look at such people with their self-imposed disability with disgust and contempt.

I think it’s pretty heroic. Weight loss must seem insurmountable and impossible when you’re that big. Especially if you’ve failed a lot. It’s pretty amazing that they can be so far gone and find the perseverance and determination within to go for it whatever else their getting that way in the first place says about them.

Salty, you are one dumb kid.

I watched a couple episodes a couple seasons ago, and watched an episode last night. All I could think of, other than the woman trainer of course, is all the cool training stuff I could shove into that ginormous building. It just seems like they’re wasting it with umpteen elipticals and treadmills.

At least the guy trainer had them doing renegade rows when I was watching it. He’s not all dumb.

You can add any hypothetical situation to someone’s actions. To use that to group a large number of people together and put them on a pedastal as big as ‘being heroic’ is silly IMO.

I mean, are all people who kill other people with guns heroic because, maybe, just maybe, they might have been in a situation where it saved others instead of being the selfish fucktard who got scared robbing a servo, like he seems to be? I dislike that reasoning…

I don’t think Salty’s stupid either, who ever said that. The man’s got a point and conveyed it pretty well.

Here u got a bunch of fatties who have let themselves get into such a bad shape that they can barely move.
They go on a reality show and lose weight and suddenly they are hero’s.

If the fat fucks didnt let themselves get so obese in the first place and remained average weight then thats more of a accomplishment in my opinion.

So you’re perfect in every way and have no flaws?

His point was that they aren’t heroic, they’re doing the bare minimum to look like normal human beings.

It’s like when people talk about someone’s “heroic” battle with cancer. I’m sorry if this offends anyone, but wanting to stay alive is not heroic. It’s the bare minimum of living. It’s the absolute lowest standard you can hold someone to.[/quote]

Stop looking:

I just found THE biggest loser!

Heroic is almost always a bad descriptive. But to equate a terminally ill person’s desire to survive as barely meeting the absolute lowest standard is just plain stupid.

And by the way–that other idiot King of Kings introduced the word hero into this conversation. I’ve never heard it mentioned on the show or anywhere else in this thread.

Qwazi,

I think I agree with part of your argument. Almost everything is relative to specific circumstances. That’s why I said that it “can” be heroic.

I wasn’t trying to bust Salty’s balls just wanted to offer another perspective and one man’s opinion.

It would be interesting to see what different people consider “heroic” to be, but I guess that’s not the point of this thread so I won’t get into it.

As far original topic goes, I’ve seen a few episodes in passing. Like most of the reality shows there’s a lot of overhyped melodrama involved but I think it conveys a good message overall.

To me that message is that people can use exercise and diet to drastically impove their overall mental and physical health. Seems like an obvious message but look around you, America continues to get more and more obese and unhealthy in general.

Although their training is not all weight training the people on that show will be much stronger than they were before they went on the show. I think, that’s a goal most of T-Nation would endorse.

Maybe it will inspire a few people to embrace a healthier lifestyle. Just like T-Nation has done for me.

Peace

I never said i was perfect, but i have not let myself get so fat i can’t even wipe my arse.
the only reason why i used the word “hero” is because the winner of Australia’s biggest loser has his picture up on the walls of my gym.A few woman and 1 or 2 guys said roughly the following:

That guy is a true inspiration, someone to really look up to.

He is my hero

I wish i could lose as much weight as him, what a champion.

Thats why i called then hero’s beacuse people see them as such (well some do).
