Forget Brad Pitt in Troy, here’s Nathan Jones, who played Boagrius. Don’t really know if he’s a good actor, but dude is huge. Think I heard he’s in the Tekken movie too?
Same Nathan Jones that was a strongman competitor till Magnus Samuelson broke his arm? He was also in a film with Jet Li, Fearless.

I believe I saw an interview with him years back and he said that as far as being in shape he was at his best during the filming of Predator. The rest of the cast, Ventura, Carl Weathers, all pushed the hell out of each other to train and get bigger, stronger.

Yeah the same guy. Wikipedia also reveals he was in WWE and has a pro MMA record of 1 loss by submission!

Jamie Fox, Will Smith, etc, got big for their roles, in my mind I don’t even consider them. If that were the case we’d be talking about Jackman as Wolverine, and that Lautner kid in New Moon.
Why all the hate on this site for Jackman?
How can you compare him to the Lautner kid? Jackman easily got as big as Smith, or any of the other “regular” actors in this thread… I think bigger, I tried some quick net research, and got 220 pounds for Wolverine, not HUGE, but I bet that’s 60 pounds on the twilight kid.
Is it the Wolverine thing? You all thought that a character who in the comic books was like 5’6" should have been played by a 6’6" tall monster, and he was just disappointing? Or is it just a reaction to all the hype, because he looked so “big” compared normal societal standards that every on this board considers puny?
He’s no Arnold, but out of the pool of actors available, he’s one of the larger ones, and can act.
Can anyone explain the hate to me?

I’d think you find that the geeks among us would’ve been absolutely pissed if Wolverine were some 6’6 guy towering over Sabretooth. But 220 is not right(I don’t buy it at all). There’s that “famous” beach pic of Jackman right after the filming of Wolverine(so an not touched up candid of him at close to the size he was for shooting) and he doesn’t look like someone who has been training for more than a year or 2 max. Now personally, as X touched on earlier, I really didn’t have much wrong with it because they touched him up on screen and made him wear jeans to cover up his lack of legs, and he played the character well so it works out. Wolverine is a “soldier” so you can somewhat rationalize him not being BB big like his comic book self(and I give credit to them for finding a big kid to play Colossus, while also not pro BB huge he dwarfed everyone else not in a muscle suit for those movies).
You also pointed out the other part of the complaint, he IS one of the bigger ones that can act, there is so much wrong with that. When Jason Statham and Hugh Jackman are “huge” on screen actors, there is something very wrong.
Edit: As for the Lautner thing you’re right there, he is no comparison to Jackman, he is the typical skinny kid lean enough to show some abs.

I’M built more like Wolverine than he is.
Best actor who was also big…
OJ Simpson
<bah dum, bum>
Also, Jim Brown, Fred Williamson, and Fred Dryer.
Apparently my mind is stuck on former football players whose acting careers peaked 20 years ago…ah, well.
Lol this is actually quite stupid. I think being a good actor and being labeled ‘big’ (especially by standards of people on an BB forum) are somewhat exclusive. A good actor is going to be in more movies, probably not typecast and playing roles with a certain degree of diversification. Therefore this hypothetical actor is not always going to be the same size, hes likely to be constantly altering his weight to suit roles.
If Will Smith, that Jai dude, Gerard Butler, Michael Walberg, Hugh Jackman want to get big they can get big. Theres no doubt in my mind. However like X mentioned its all about what the casting directors, film directors and producers want.

I agree.
There just seems to be a lot of hate for him here, wherever he gets mentioned. If anything, I’d have thought that the choice for Sabertooth would have drawn more criticism, since Liev Schreiber wasn’t anything compared to Jackman in that movie… and I guess that’s why they gave him a big black coat to wear… but he should have been massive.
But again, I can’t think of anyone who can act, and could have come close to pulling that size off.

Hate? I don’t hate the guy…but I also don’t like the fact that fucking SUPER HEROES that used to be drawn like NPC super heavy weights are now played by people who make me look like the super hero. Just once I would like to see one of these movies and not feel like I could bench press the whole cast and crew.
Wolverine is FUCKING SWOLE in the comics and nearly every cartoon series. Why is expecting actors to match up on screen now a bad thing?

No one is talking shit about the acting. I think Liev played that part well…if we ignore the way all of these characters have traditionally looked for the past 30 years or more.
I’m surprised no one mentioned Vin Diesel yet.
And anyone thinking that The Rock, Jon Cena, HHH, or any of the WWE wrestlers can act, is crazy. Anyone actually watch The Marine? Fuck… They should have renamed it ‘EXPLOSION: The movie’ Jon Cena will punch you in the face… then you’ll EXPLODE! The thing about wrestlers is that while they no doubt can be charismatic, that charisma hardly ever translates into real acting ability.
I second the notion that a lot of actors today could no doubt bulk up for a role if they really wanted to. Christian Bale deserves an honorable mention I think. When he bulks up for a role it’s noticeable.
Really thinking about this though, I honestly don’t think that Hollywood is in some sort of “big guy actor” defecit. I mean, look at the past 30 years. Really the only big guy actors that we have EVER had are a handful of them. Arnie, Sly, Dolph, Ferigno, et al… Then loook at today - still just a handful of big guy actors and most of them have already been mentioned.
