Well the regular Mafia will fuck you up. The Gay Mafia will fuck you up too, just in a different way, and place.
In all seriousness, its just a term to describe how dominated and massively over represented the scene was by the G & L community, especially in positions of Arts administration. I’ve been out of the scene for a long time, I can only imagine it has gotten even crazier when things went from G &L to LGBTQ+++.
Seems like some pilots and people in aviation are mass quitting their jobs.
Meanwhile in Italy there are mass protests on vaccine passports. Even neo nazi groups are shouting facsists and freedom. It will be very interesting. Winter is comming.
Errr… the former is kinda true. Can they effectively monitor everyone online? Nope. The latter would be in places like North Korea. I don’t see any North Koreans around. Do you?
Oh come on. Making such a comparison is pretty silly. Do you have any idea how carefully I choose my words especially when I post in the political forums? Look at how many edits I make in some posts.
If I were from the US, I’d be more concerned about government regulations in private enterprises even pre-COVID. That’s the shit that blows my mind sometimes and I deal with fucking China lol.
I’m gonna be honest here. Half of this “culture wars” nonsense is just a fucking smokescreen to deflect from real economic and political issues. China is doing similar shit with it’s clamping down on billionaires and flexing on Taiwan and other countries are picking up this intersectionalism or whatever the fuck you call it from the US to do the same.
100+ year old business chains are closing down? Recession is ongoing? Who cares? Minorities are living in fear for their lives everyday in the First World. Suddenly, in this day and age, walking through a shopping mall as a fucking 5th-7th generation immigrant like almost every other fucker in the fucking country other than the natives whom in almost every single fucking developed country are minorities too is like going into a war zone.
I’ve not met many artists but I’ll take YOUR word for it lol. I’ve met several professional classical musicians, though, and they’re mostly mental but then they’re paid well and their skills aren’t “subjective”. One dude allegedly slept sucking a fucking pacifier every night. His WIFE confirmed but this was told to me by a third party who knew her.
Other than the client I worked for who was quite sane since he was also a businessman, I’ve only had experience in government art galleries. Can’t say I’ve seen as much insanity as you have.
They are generally more professional in the government art galleries over here too.
The more contemporary art in the gallery, vs traditional, and modernist art, the more likely it is to be run by mentals.
Most of the academics, that became curatorial staff were about the beauty, technique, and the history of art. Most have retired (or close to it). They were replaced by people educated in Neo Marxism. Very poor quality art is now held at the same level as the most exquisite masterpieces of humanity. Political currency promoting Marxist ideology, like gay rights, feminism, post colonialism, and other minority rights is considered more important than the artistic merits of the medium, and how well they are executed, in telling the intended message or meaning.
Classical musicians I generally find to be more sane, than the visual artists(that’s a very relative term), though I have met my share of heroine using practitioners in that scene too.
I highly doubt when middle-class Americans are fired from their jobs for politically incorrect statements, with a mortgage, other serious bills, wife, and children, they are going to be worried about government regulations for private enterprises.
Guy goes home in tears after being fired from his J-O-B, not his private enterprise, to his wife and kids after getting fired.
Husband/Dad: “Babe, I got fired. They saw my SM posts!”
Wife: “OMG, Why? What are we gonna do? I told you to stop with that stuff on social media!”
“I dunno! I won’t do it again! But those goddamn business regulations!”
I can’t STAND cancel culture. I was never a big fan of social media as I believe the entire construct panders towards inducing a degree of systemic societal toxicity.
But when I do make a post, I always feel as if I’m walking on eggshells… You need to be SO careful, less some sadistic ass comes along and tries to “expose” you for something you said fifteen years ago that in all likelihood was probably an off the cuff comment that is in no way, shape or form a representation of one’s character
It’s sickening… It’s virtue signalling and crusading at its finest.
How many of us, whether online or in person, have made at LEAST one inappropriate, vulgar and insensitive remark? How many of us have sexually objectified women in a peer to peer conversation in a manner that in all likelihood was probably disrespectful and inappropriate?
Should you be fired over a stupid remark you made a few years ago at a dinner party? Absolutely not… People have LOST THEIR MINDS!!! No one is perfect…
Catch people out over seriously nefarious activities. Sexual assault, theft equitable to grand larceny, white collar crime, bribery and corruption. These variables actually matter
This isn’t Marxism… Actually I suppose it depends on the Marxist party we speak of
Historically, the majority have been vehemontly anti-gay; sometimes going as far as to imprison or execute homosexuals. Absolutely barbaric
From my perspective, there is nothing inherently wrong with saying “homosexuals needn’t be deprived of the basic fundamentals rights heterosexuals have”. Care to try change my view?
Advocating to restrict what a homosexual can or can’t do to me seems like oppression, outright discrimination on the basis of a character trait an individual cannot control. A trait that doesn’t harm anyone aside from perhaps the individual himself IF he/she partakes in anal sex which not all homosexual individuals do as that isn’t everyone’s cup of tea… It’s not entirely mainstream…
Even then, medical interventions have significantly lessened the risk associated with this.
I’m aware the mainstream paradigm has gone beyond this, however I think we need to clarify what “gay rights” actually means. To me “gay rights” refers to equality, a homosexual deserves the same opportunities in life. I’ve read the literature on homosexual parenting, and provided two parental figures are present it doesn’t appear to significantly alter the trajectory of the child.
Again, no. The fascists and assorted crazies are protesting, that is true. But despite the “popular mandate” they’re claiming it’s only a militant fringe.
Italy performed better than the US and the EU average in terms of percentage population vaccinated, so if you’re expecting a mass uprising by communists, fascists and other anti vaxxers you’re in for a rude awakening. The sheeple are in majority.
I originally deleted the post because I felt I had written too much but I feel you deserve a reply.
Context matters.
He was making an implicit comparison between the US and other countries in his post in terms of freedom of speech. Which is an argument based on ideology. While he is pretty much wrong in his view of consequences in certain countries he made a reference to by implication when it comes to this although I do get the deliberate hyperbole needed for sarcasm to be involved, looking at things on an ideological level should, IMO, be looked at from a macro view.
My point is that if you wanna worry about things on an ideological level, there are other things to worry about that may have led to this “freedom of speech” issue in the first place.
Excessive government intervention in the market is one of these.
What does overregulation lead to? Higher prices for the consumer - more barriers to entry = less competition = less consumer choice = less power when it comes to “voting with your dollar” - more potential corruption, government enabled oligopolies which can be compelled to play ball when the government wants to push certain agendas by simply invoking the laws they turned a blind eye to previously and these corporations don’t have the balls to put up a fight because they know they’d lose, more curtailing of “freedom of speech” without the government having to pass legislation which is why I’ve been using colons for this term when appropriate, excessive public reliance on certain corporations like the social media giants for social capital, eventual consequences such as job loss for employees for flouting the rules etc.
Those areas of focus, I mentioned are Neo Marxist, so it encompasses more than what Marx’s theory did.
There are a lot a good gay and also female artists historically. I never had an issue with any of that, if the artist was talented in the way they expressed themselves and their ideas.
My issue was that the expression and signalling of these ideologies as a political tool, became more important in the art world, rather than the degree of artistry the artist conveyed in their actual work.
Its like a woke movie, that ticks all the right boxes politically, but has bad acting, poorly written plot, and script, and amateurish cinematography. The end result may have all the best intentions but the result is crap.
You can be gay or a women or whatever in the art world. It just doesn’t mean you’re automatically a good artist. Unfortunately the art scene was dominated by a lot of people who thought it was one big gay club. The focus on the art itself was no longer a priority. In general the quality has gone down drastically, as a result.
For clarification, a jazz cigarette is a cigarette with cannabis in it. But the jazz scene has always been filled with the use of illicit narcotics. Cannabis being on the benign end, heroin being the deep end.
In the arts schools, of which I’d argue have a disproportionately higher rate of drug experimentation. Not due to the nature of arts themselves, but due to the liberal nature of the school’s coupled with the very affluent demographics that frequently attend these schools (lots of money/time on hands).
Of the crowds within art school, I’ve consistently been told (and seen before my own eyes) the jazz kids tend to be the heaviest users. Though this is a generalisation, you’ll find plenty of straight edge jazz kids too.
Historically jazz musicians have been particularly intertwined with vice, some would put rock musicians to shame.
Back in the day, alcoholism was very common amongst that scene. Then the paradigm switched and cannabis became the preferred substance presumably due to the effect it has regarding music appreciation. One way or another, heroin infiltrated the scene, as did cocaine and intravenous morphine.
This was in the 40’s and 50’s. Whereas drug use wasn’t generally at epidemic proportions within society (yet), it most certainly was in the jazz scene.
It is very sad, as the majority using the hard stuff were doing so to escape personal demons.
The reputation lingers, if you go to an arts school (I didn’t, but I knew people who did) you’ll typically hear “jazz kids make up a large portion of the heavy users”. The excuse being “it increases creativity, enhances appreciation for music”. I doubt heroin is still as entrenched within the scene though as the statistics on heroin use (or opiate abuse in general) should be enough to scare most off.
There may be something to be said about the drugs enhancing creativity and enhancing the appeal of the music. Particularly pot, psychedelics and study agents. But I’d disagree with the prospect of abusing these agents to write music, as doing so indicates you rely on a crutch to display your talents. That is a very slippery slope, a route to psychological dependence.
Good insight, I really enjoyed that post.
Like some of the best jazz(and other )musicians they used drugs. There are plenty of people that thought I’m a musician(or visual artist for that matter), just added drugs. All they became were drug addicts, never produced anything of note.
I remember a guy from art school. Not very talented as an artist but he was in there exploring the scene, having a go. He started using heroin. Not long after he got kicked out because all he would do was sit around in a stupor, non responsive, high as fuck. Not long after he was selling his arse on Oxford st to pay for his habit. Incredibly sad. I often wonder if he turned his life around.
There’s a difference between trying drugs and chronic, frequent intake. Drugs and alcohol when abused can be absolutely insidious
I think you’ll find the types that become famous musicians tend to be rather experimental in nature. It’s a subset of personality that has a proclivity to push boundaries. That or you have the seriously troubled, yet savant subtype who silently implodes whilst churning out hits until the day they die. Jimmy Hendrix, Kurt Cobain etc.
Was this around the 1980’s-1990’s by chance? Heroin isn’t a particularly big issue in Aus anymore.
Methamphetamine is a huge issue now though. During lockdowns, for the first time ever methamphetamine use per capita in cities has overtaken rural, low income neighbourhoods. Very concerning, I think we will see a far larger societal dillema years down the line with methamphetamine as it is one of the few that is produced domestically, is easy to make and is extremely addictive when used in the fashion addicts use it in (methamphetamine is marketed as an ADHD medication in certain countries, but even then it is a last resort)
You’ll find social degradation, decreased median quality of life, desperation and a wish to escape tends to lead to an uptick in drug and alcohol abuse. The USA in particular seems to be towing a fine line. If both mainstream political factions continue to radicalise towards opposite extremes, internal conflict may develop, political unrest as we have seen over the past few years may become the norm. I see Australia decaying under the pressure of autocracy and economic disintegration.
It’ll be very interesting to observe what happens to the world over the next decade or two.
Do you think Italy will have a 100 % vaccination rate. I have my doubts for over 85. Even 15 % are over a few millions and will protest. Then once governments start mandating 3rd and 4th shots for full vaccine pass, do you think that even 75 % will comply. You are for a rude awekening.
