It even turned out one of my art teachers was a heroin/methadone addict. She was functional, but had a very unpleasant personality, no doubt exacerbated by the drugs. She actually was talented artistically.
Yes, it is a common misconception that opiate addicts can’t function. Eventually the addict relies on the drug to function normally, at which point using is less about getting high and more about warding off withdrawals.
At which point maintenance therapy can ward off withdrawl symptoms, however I’m not exactly sure how this works. What safeguards are put in place to ensure the addict isn’t using methadone or Buprenorphine as maintenance, yet topping up with their own supply on occasion? Frequently topping up would lead to a higher maintenance set point.
The most successful remedy in terms of trialled policy for heroin addicts who are simply too far gone is actually heroin substitution/maintenance therapy. Maintenance doses are rationed out, the addict can live a normal life. It’s a last resort, but it appears to work better than methadone/Buprenorphine.
