I was recently found to have hypothyroidism with a TSH count of 5.9 meaning my t3 and t4 levels are low thus the the high production of TSH. At any rate I was given a 50 mcg dose of Synthyroid hormone a day. Along with this my blood pressure was a bit high 140/70 and I had complained about rapid heart rate random increeses in my pulse rate it would get up to 98 when I was just sittind around at times. For this I was was given a 50mg dose of Toprol or metoprolol a beta blocker. My question is this. I am going to be cutting in the next few weeks how should this beta blocker effect my ability to get my heart rate up and pumping when I do my HIIT training?
Hey, not a doctor here so take whatever I say with that in mind. I use beta blockers from time to time to help with performance anxiety. I also once used them to help with sleeping and discovered one of the not so great side effects of beta blocker use: limp dick. Personally I would be more concerned about THAT side effect than anything else. I know there are other meds your doc can give you that might do the same thing, but I’m not sure what they are. Also, it might make fat loss more difficult for another reason: beta receptor blockers sorta function like the opposite of Ephedrine and other beta agonists. Common sense leads me to think that such a thing might make fat loss harder. Something else that springs to mind: any chance you might have some form of asthma? I didn’t discover I had it until I was in college. I have never needed a rescue inhaler, but I do fight a limited lung function and my heart rate seems to elevate really fast when I lift or do cardio. If you do have some form of asthma, the beta-blockers could definitely cause you more trouble. Okay, hope this helps…please don’t do anything with your meds without checking with your doc first!
Regarding cardio training, take your meds an hour or so after you’ve completed your session. If you take your meds before training then, you’re right, your heart rate will increase only marginally.
Thanks for the good thoughs. As for the side effects of course I have considered them all. And the doctor said I should wait for at leaset a few weeks to see if any arise and we decide then what to do. At any rate I am at a low dose and I am hoping for the best. As for the ashma how do they test for that. They had me blow into some tube for lunc function it was a-ok… I am playing it by ear this is all new to me for now… The more insight the better keep it coming…

The 140 part of 140/70 is considered high normal and supplementation could bring that number right back in line if you don’t like the idea of taking beta blockers.
