Best Workout to Build Strength for Powerlifting?

Hi Jim,

I have both the “531 second edition” and the “531 beyond” ebooks.

I’ve been training for the last 2 years and in that time have used mostly “Boring but big” variations.

Since getting the 531 beyond book I’ve been using the main lifts with jokers and first set last sets.

I’ve always used a 4 day split (deadlift, bench, squat, overhead press) and I’m a raw lifter.

My question is what workout would you recommend over all others to build strength for powerlifting?

I’ve also recently been re-reading about the "simplest strength template (SST).

What workout would you recommend for creating the best strength gains?

I have 2 competitions coming up in 15 weeks and 20 weeks and want to ensure i give myself the best chance of success.

Many Thanks
B

Any workout that keeps you motivated to train and push - they are all based on the same principles so it won’t matter too much.
6 week blocks - then reassess and do what you need to do.

I think people really believe there is some kind of secret diet or program - there isn’t. Here’s how you do it:

  • Consistently push yourself to be great.

That’s about it. There is no “best” of anything only what is best for you at that time. What is best for me now is certainly not what is best for me when I’m 10 years old. However, the principles that endure are what matters. Thus I believe in the 4 basic principles and keep myself honest with the 10 point Weak Point plan. That’s about it.

That’s great Jim, I’m making good progress at the moment with jokers and first set last.

I guess I’m just really keen to optimize my workouts to make good progress, so wondered if there was any one particular program that stood out.

Will continue to blast away at what I’m doing.

Thanks for the reply

sorry, what is the 10 point weak-point plan?
can’t remember reading anything about it.
thanks.

Try the strength challenge on page 88. Looks like it might be right up your alley.
