Hi Ellington,
Just wondered what your views were on the best post workout meal.
My current regime is lots of water and then a banana blended in with some chocolate milk and some Greek yogurt but the blended drink can feel a bit “heavy” going down sometimes.
Is there anything else that you think is particularly beneficial?
Thanks,
Jeff

Peanut butter and jelly sandwich on jewish rye with a 1/2 cup chocolate milk is my favorite
Note…this is not immediately after a training session, its about an hour after
You are fine with your meal. Interestingly, Arthur Jones used to drink a quart of buttermilk after a hard workout. That was similar to chocolate milk, a banana, and Greek yogurt.

I just eat as normal. That is, food I like. In general I get plenty of protein, and don’t go out of my way to focus on it. I know we are encouraged (cough) to eat tons of it, but the post workout nutrition window feels like one of those things where you can find a study to justify something special, but (IMO), it is trivial and in the long run makes no significant difference.
If checking off that box helps, what the heck, have a special post workout meal after your 30 minute strength training session (I mean “your” in general, not you specifically Jeff). Yesterday I had cabbage, potatoes and this beef/mushroon/kale thing my wife thinks. I can feel myself growing lol.
I just saw @Ellington_Darden respond, so that is cool, but you would have to pay me to drink a quart of buttermilk
and there is nothing magic about it. It is food.
I do focus on carbs (a bit - again, I get plenty in my regular diet) and fluids in the heat though. After long sessions of yardwork or tennis, like yesterday
Thanks. Lord knows how Jones stomached buttermilk! Yuck!

Going off this video
I’d say a proper post workout Warrior’s Breakfast is going to be steak, eggs, potatoes, cornbread and soup.
I will say, for myself, I pull more from the Vince Gironda playbook these days

Not enuff carbs for me. Personally I’d be struggling to recover without them. Each to their own!

For sure. Vince saves the carbs for a meal every 3-5 days. I actually find I only need them once a week.
On a more serious note..lol

That pizza needs more oil on it, according to J.M. Blakely.

This topic is very interesting and it leads me to this question for Dr. Darden
What food would you consider to be the perfect food?
I know some will say beef, some will say the egg and others may say fruit
So, Dr. Darden, what do you think is considered the Perfect Food?
A team of experts answered the question of a perfect food a few years ago. It’s mother’s milk. It has everything a baby needs for growth and well-being.
