A good fighter know when and when not to throw a technique. That being said, a fighter who does not know how to throw a kick is missing powerful tool. And yes, I have been in a fight, and yes I have been able to get off a kick (a spinning back kick). As far arrogance being bad, it’s not bad if you can back it up.What’s bad is not being open to different fighting techniques.
Ya, I’m sure to a degree your right that Inosanto’s video’s are geared towards selling more of his stick and knife techniques. After all that’s his livliehood. However this video was for police and to show that the newer policies of many departments not being allowed to draw their gun until faced by an armed assailent, is a mistake. He was trying to show that police should have their weapons drawn when entering and unknown situation. I’m not sure where you live, but in my part of the world, it is absolutely illegal to carry a hand gun. Defending yourself with this kind of weapon is simply not an option.
Bras. - that’s too bad about the injury. I hope it heals in time but I think it’s better to play it safe having not done so in the past and learned my lesson:).
Ko is 100% right about being able to throw kicks. I’m primarily a grappler and I have trained with world class wrestlers/judoka and I’m willing to throw a kick at the right time and right place against them. Rev, you sound like I did when I first started grappling back in the 90’s.
For those of you that are not used to dealing with adrenal stress (adrenaline rushes when confronted with physical violence) you will be in for one HUGE reality check if you were to get off the computer and take a FAST Defense class. I was certainly surprised. I really don’t care what degree black belt you are, or what you have studied in the past, unless you are a regular bar room brawler (or once was) this class WILL TEACH YOU HOW TO FIGHT and you won’t have to spend endless hours in a dojo, and to top it all off you will know exactly how you would react when confronted with violence, you will also get to kick the everliving s*** out of someone. Worse case scenario you spend 5 hours in this class, you don’t like it and THEY WILL GIVE YOU YOUR MONEY BACK!!!
Don’t get me wrong about Dan Inosanto, I think his escrima techniques are top notch, I own several of his books and videos myself. And I completely agree that police should have their gun drawn when entering potentially dangerous situations. I just don’t agree with the way he chose to get that message across, I find it terribly misleading. As far as carrying a gun in your part of the world I am sorry that is not a viable option for you. I am lucky to have the amount of freedom I do. Nonetheless, using deadly force in any civilized country will attract alot of attention from local law enforcement, and will be a big hassle at best, and might land your ass in jail at worst. However, if it is between me and a pack of amped up dope dealers, it would be my pleasure to dispatch them quickly and efficiently.
Got to agree with KO and Geoff. To just disregard kicking as a potential weapon is silly, especially if your guard is the shit.
Sorry dude, but try getting into a full contact situation(competition/street). A. The guy is not wearing a big blue suit. B. The guy is trying to take you out( not just trying to fluster you).C. It hurts when he does. D. You also get to attack withh full power against an attacking opponent. I’m sure its great if you have not been in a FULL CONTACT (you mentioned that you came from Isshin Ryu) situation, but otherwise, its just as lame as those women’s self defense classes. I would not waste my FREE time, let alone pay for it.
