Best Fighting Style for Taller People?

NO your definately not gonna stand still. Besides that’s such a CONTROLLED enviorment lol…do you really know when the guy is gonna throw those punches? How are you gonna act with being so nervous, especailly if you don’t fight.

Let me tell you a story…I really don’t like speaking of any fights I’ve been in, but look…I was at a bar, I wasn’t even of age (18) I was chillin outside and some guy came out of the bar. Much older than me…but he’s in MY AREA, so I got friends around and what not. Anyways I’m standing whatever, and then he starts to stare at me…I can feel it, I can see it. So I look at him, and he starts to talk to me and well he’s not trying to make friends let’s put it that way. So I can feel tension and the situation is escalating. So by now it’s pretty obvious this guy wants some. He starts clenching his fists, eyes getting wider…I’m talking and talking, nothing is getting through…so I just say…what the fuck did you come out here for…go back inside man, it’s a good time in there. He replies…I’m not going anywhere, and tells me to COME CLOSER to him. And is like…come here man, come closer to me (fists still clenched). So I’ve had enough…I don’t say anything anymore…I just stare at him and stare and stare…there is 100% tension, shit is about to hit the fan. At first in my mind I thought…man why is this guy doing this, why does he wanna fight me…does he have a weapon…all these things are runnin through my mind so fast…I’m nervous (this is natural). But as we were staring…all doubt went out the window cause I knew it was go time. AS SOON as you know it’s go time, I feel all fear dissipate.

I asked myself what is the quickest way for me to fuck this guy up. Simple.
Distract him for 1 second.

Keeping him in my perphial vision I slightly look over and call someones name and say “(name) is giving me trouble”…the guy looked over to see who I was calling over…as soon as he looked over for that 1 second, I made my move…cocked my right hand and smashed his face…he fell down…I kicked him, and threw a few more punches and it was 100% done. I looked in the window quickly to see if anybody of his friends saw what had happened so as soon as they come out the door…well they were gonna be next to get it. As soon as they opened that door I wouldve unloaded on them, I have friends with me now as well.

Point of the story. Such a simple distraction like that can be so effective, for real. It doesn’t take much to hurt someone if you commit to what you are doing.

Now please…catch my punches lol.
I will be stealing both that distraction technique and that story as well. Thanks.

Watch the big, bearded guy - he’s the real deal.
He could catch your punches easily, rasturai.

Yea buddy. Something real simple like that is what seperates a cagey streetfighter from a dojo expert.

Could you go in-depth on that Irish, and what is “cagey”. Thanks man.

Yes Dymdez my stratgery worked very well in that situation…I was a bit sketched out, don’t get me wrong…it’s not like I wasn’t nervous…I definately wasn’t scared, but I was nervous and I did feel my adrenaline rising…but I kept my cool…if I hadn’t of kept my cool I probably woulda mucked up the whole thing. My “acting” would’ve gave it away what I was going to do if I didn’t keep my cool, and he probably woulda saw me rushin him from a mile away…you gotta be sneaky with this, and act to pull it off.

What combat styles do you train with? Just boxing?

Thx
rasturai wrote:

The word “cagey” means something like “Shrewd” or “cunning.” In the context of boxing, a cagey fighter would be someone like BHop, Casamayor, or Carlos Quintana- not the strongest, not the fastest, but is hard to hit, dirty as fuck, and will bait you into making mistakes by playing possum, etc. They’ll also say someone is “wily,” and the term is often used in relation to southpaws because they have an unusual style that kind of demands this kind of thing… basically, it’s knowledge of the game.

In your case, or in any other streetfight case, it’s that “knowledge of the game” that makes all the difference. You don’t have to be the strongest, the fastest, the most skilled when you’re out there in the wild- but to live, you gotta be smart, you gotta be cunning.

That’s why a move like yours was smart- distract the dude, however briefly, and then pop him. That guy could’ve been an amateur boxer, an MMA pro, or a black belt in whatever else, but distracting and hitting once with a bare fist is often enough to end whatever is going down before it starts.

These guys get so used to fighting in a ring or a cage or the dojo that they forget that in real life, things don’t happen anything like what you’re training for. Then they get into some shit on the street, get tricked by a guy who’s done this before and get laid out, and then blame their art because they lost- well no dumbass, you learned one piece of the bigass puzzle and never bothered with the rest of it.

Maybe I have a different perspective on all this because I grew up fighting way before I began actually training in anything, and I was always kind of dumbfounded when the places I trained at called it self defense but never taught any of the things I had picked up on my own- i.e. pulling a guy’s sweatshirt over his head while you’re hitting him like Happy Gilmore (used it all the time) or when you’re in close, going straight for the throat and grabbing their adam’s apple instead of trying to do chinese finger locks.

Ahh thanks for the thorough reply Irish, makes much sense. I can admit it’s not hard for me mentally to get my mind state to escalate a situation to the next level, and usually people don’t wanna take it to that next level and will back off. If I know something is gonna go down…I’ll wait for you to go to the bathroom and while your pissing I’ll smash your face into the wall repeatdely…if you have hair I can grab even better…that’s why if I go to a bar (rare) I piss in the stalls with the door locked. You never know!

Muay thai couple years…boxing strictly now. Did some grappling/submissions stuff before got my arm fractured when I was 16 by my teacher accidently lol.

I know you didn’t ask…but eventually I’d like to learn throws/sweeps…which I’ll probably go to a judo school for.

You should check out all these vids. I like the lapel/chin grab technique…would I use it? I don’t know, but I’m sure it’s very effective. As for other “combat” things…man they teach headbutts, elbows all this stuff…but really how hard is it to throw a headbutt and elbow?
Take some muay thai and you’ll learn how to throw elbows. Headbutt, pretty simple…but make sure it’s very effective. I’d grab his head and use both forces. Again I’ve never done it, could i? If the situation called for it I definately could if I was close enough and whatever.
Back to the vids though…it’d be cool to learn something like this: check out the other vids by him too.

Would I use it? I’m not sure…usually if I’m going to engage something physical with someone…I’m most likely going to be pretty violent about it and I don’t know if that’d do the trick for me…again…I don’t know what the other persons intensions are, and what they want to do to me. Frankly…I don’t really care and don’t want to stick around to find out so I rather smash them. But take a look at his vids they are cool.
I really think if some guy at some party was starting shit with you to show his friends, whatever…those techniques could be effective.

Oh as well I like this guy’s videos…streetfightsecrets (sure it sounds corny lol) but he has some good shit on his page with a lot of videos…

Watch the main vid…and well you can look up a lot of shit on his page.

EDIT: I’m not posting this shit for the OP to watch some vids and take on that guy he has trouble with. I’ve gone completely off topic and I know this lol. Just two more videos I’d like everyone here to watch…it involves KNIVES…enjoy.

This is pretty true shit right here…if someone pulls a knife on me I wouldn’t fight them UNLESS they were close enough for me to pop my right hand in their face (I’ve punched enough to be confident that I can KO someone with my right hand if they are just standing there). If they pulled out a knife, (i was close) I’d get my shot in…if it KO’s them or I can see they are very stunned I would follow up. If they are far away…i would RUN! (cause I’m a pussy right? lol) and if for some reason i cannot escape them…i’d run enough to give myself enough time to pull out my own blade.

That’s Kelly McCann in those videos. He’s the real deal, and one of the baddest dudes alive as far as I’m concerned. He has a terrific book out called “Combatives for Street Survival” and I advise anyone interested in real self-defense to buy it.

He goes over techniques, of course, but also pre-fight indicators, tip offs, etc. and goes into stories from his own experience and that of other Marines as well. I truly advocate anything written or produced by him.

sweep the leg

lol slimjim.

“Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do” is good for tall people, there is a famous NBA player is practicing it. Cant remember the name…

There are two lines of JKD: Jun Fan and Concepts. Stick with Jun Fan.
Watch this guy on youtube : “Tommy Carruthers”. Im learning his line o JKD.
I think Krav Maga is a good choice also and its more widely spread.

Just a question though: Why dont you talk to him in the presence of his wife. She can certainly testify that you didn’t come on to her cant she? Beats using violence, I think its not the answer in this situation.

Ok I read the rest of your posts and can see that talking may not work.
My advice. Learn to defend yourself somehow!
Watch your back, and stop any and all contact with his wife.
Sooner or later the guy is going to quit stalking you.
Avoid violence unless the guy initiates it first.

yo dymdez whats goin on with the situation? you knock in some skulls yet? lol

Thanks for the advice c?sar

I returned back to the original gym, and I havent seen him. I think my powerlifting partner had some words for him. And being a national winner in his weight/age class I think he was rather convincing. Yea havent seen him, the wife or daughter lately. Which is a good thing, I just learned that the daugher is 16 years old (swear to god she looks in her 20s. fuck modern cosmetics)

On a more interesting note, I took my first boxing lesson, It’s rather steep, I opted for a former professional boxer as an instructor… I dont even wanna tell you guys how much I’m paying. It’s gunna be four figures total by the end of summer…

I pretty much destroyed my wrists and forearms and hands the first day. I cannot move them. Also, with all the fucking retarded jumproping my squat day was pretty much ruined. I woke up feeling like I got hit by a car.

I cannot fucking stand the speed bag. I can’t throw a left hook with any power and for god’s sake I’m 6’5 I DONT NEED TO LEARN AN UPPERCUT.

Other than that, boxing is a funny sport, you think it’s so easy but it’s horrifyingly difficult when the other person knows exactly what theyre doing. In sparring, I got absolutely brutalized, my eyelids are all swollen, my serratus anterior is sore (not sure how that muscle even gets sore). When I left, I asked the guy how I did and he goes “Do I think you’re a champion boxer? No. Is there room for improvement? Yes.” …blahhhh

None the less, I’ll keep you guys posted, hope you all are doing much better than me.

Glad to hear this. Amazing shit can get solved without anybody going to jail, ain’t it?

LOL. Everybody thinks boxing’s so damn easy until they get in there. Shit ain’t like it looks, is it now?

And for god’s sake- you do need to learn an uppercut no matter how tall you are. It’s one of the most brutally powerful shots in the arsenal, and if you do it right you’re dropping down at least six inches before you throw it anyway.

If a guy has his hands covering his face, the only way to split the defense is with an uppercut.

Watch teh end of this fight, where Kelly Pavlik, the taller fighter, ends up demolishing Jermain Taylor with two uppercuts that put him out.
