Best Exercise for Upper Traps?

Props to arramzy for sacking up and posting pics.

However… dude, you have a terrible sense of size and body comp. Stick to what you know (i.e. powerlifting and being strong), or, if you’re interested in this side of the fence, spend some time listening to others and learning before making ridiculous claims.

P.S. I’m probably about 11% in my avatar (srs).

^ i believe that

back to OP… i always see guys at my gym doing a farmer’s walk with 1 plate in each hand and holding the shrug in the top position.

just wondering if any of you large trap masters actually did that.

That sounds awkward and potentially harmful to your shoulders.

Static holds are a different discussion all together though. I did do that initially and I think it helped.

I’m always amazed at how terrible even fairly experienced lifters are at estimating bodyfat. Ten percent and under is quite lean, regardless of where/how you store fat. Even sub-15 is leaner than people seem to realize, while that seems to be the number that freaks people out because it’s the line between 10 and 20, and apparently makes you a chubster.

Holy hell apparently what people have told me in the past is insanely innacurate… Well thanks for clarifying this. You are certainly right that I obviously have a lot to learn.

Again, returning to the actual purpose of this thread, does anyone feel that upright rows are a valuable movement for traps? How do you tweak them to favour shoulders versus traps? I used to do them but had pain in the elbows sometimes. Do you like to keep the elbows pointed up like chicken wings?

Personally, I’ve always been afraid to do that movement. With the amount of people that complain about shoulders hurting from it (even though it doesn’t bother some people) the risk is just not worth it to me. Shrugs should be good enough for traps but if you’re going to try them for lateral delts or w/e I’d say do them like CT does his “high pulls” with that wider grip. Should be videos in the training lab.

1 finisher I like is to do rear delt raises but flare your traps up for the entire set. Gives a nice final burn.

coincidentally, I’ve never seen anyone with large traps doing it

I think static holds done for the purpose of building up lactic acid and grip strength/endurance are great.

my preferred method of trap destruction as a finisher is shrugs in a standing calf machine, or any machine that has shoulder pads that you can put your head in between. you can still do a heavy-ish set even if your grip is fried for the day, and it’s easy to do drop sets, static holds and the like to really toast your traps.

A great exercise for the rear delts that can be considered a finisher goes as follows: If you’re at a commercial pussy gym grab the heaviest dumbell, and row till failure (keep the mind-muscle connection with your rear delts).

You can even do one arm rows with a barbell although you will have to develop some stability muscles which ain’t gonna do you no harm. Keep the barbell at your side, more or less parallel to the ground at the start position.

Yeah I know, it’s OK, critics are welcome always.

I’m beginning to think that ‘traps’ is a never-ending source of pure entertainment:
