Best Exercise for Upper Traps?

No. Big traps are ugly.

I personally think that if you deadlift regularily with reasonable volume and decent form, nothing will work better than deadlift. Both conventional and sumo work fine, though for me conventional seems to work better.

…but…your traps aren’t that big.

I’m not being a prick…I just don’t get why guys with “ok” traps think they have built enough.

Olympic weightlifting.

Under-water-one-legged-deadlifts…OR shrugs!!!

I simply cannot decide!!!

You need reverse band, chain loaded, spring board high incline mixed grip wrist raises.

The upper traps elevate the scapulae. Deadlift does not involve scapular elevation, so it obviously won’t makes everyone’s traps huge, although it certainly works for some. This isn’t complicated stuff, but the OP already stated in the other thread that he doesn’t like shrugs, so he’s clearly biased.

i do this.

Week 1 - Power shrugs to max
Week 2 - Shrug hold (30seconds+)
week 3 - triple grip shrugs(CG/SG/WG)
week 4 - Shrug walk (roughly 25 paces)

Increase weight every week.

My profile picture is almost 25lb old. Also, back dbl bicep pose makes traps look smaller.

A better comeback would be a picture showcasing your traps man. Burden of evidence being on you, for making the claim about deadlifts being enough and all…

Anyways, I’m all about different shrug variations. Mainly just regular ones…but power shrugs, shrugs walks, farmer carries, hell yes to all of the above. Like any other muscle, just work’em hard, work them smart (don’t injure yourself).

Yer traps look pretty small in that back dbl bi…

Very well. Here is a quick picture I just took at my desk.

And one more.

Also, I feel that the deadlift is an outstanding movement overall for many reasons. Plus, I like knowing I could probably out deadlift (600lb) all of you who are saying I have small traps.

It was you fault for having an old picture.

You have traps…but they aren’t huge. That was all I was saying. It isn’t like I would see you in the gym and assume you knew all about making traps huge. The guys I see with HUGE traps usually don’t skip the shrugs. I’m talking about the people with traps so big that they get a response alone.

I am also not saying deadlifts don’t work, but most of you acting like that is ALL you need don’t seem to be freaking people out with the traps.

Fair enough. I guess I just feel that my traps are proportional. Obviously not huge like you say. I also think that for most average guys training who are whatever, like 150-190lb, it is important to spend their time training on big movements rather than worrying about shrugs and curls. This is why I always try to preach exercises like the deadlift. I myself have gone from being like 160lb to ~215lb at 5’6 (BMI 33, bf% ~10%) through almost exclusively using the 3 powerlifts. Meanwhile, most guys who spend all their time doing shrugs in the gym seem to be way smaller. Not saying these types of movements don’t have their place and obviously work very well for many advanced lifters (clearly you use them and are doing very well yourself), but if I train someone, I say you ought to get a decent strength and size base (BMI of 28 with bf <15%) before worrying about ‘building huge traps’. Just my opinion.

Thanks for being very polite and reasonable in this discussion btw. I appreciate a calm comparison of ideas and opinions.

I see no logical reason to tell someone interested in building their body up in proportion to AVOID curls and shrugs. I am very glad I didn’t do this. It didn’t hurt me. My traps outgrew most of the people who would avoid shrugs when they used to be non-existent.

If you want smaller arms than optimal, avoid curls.

Kettlebell cleans always fry my traps. Maybe that’s because I don’t do them very often, but nothing else makes my traps so sore.
