I’m looking to buy an excellent car GPS system this winter. Does anyone have any recommendations? I’ve checked a lot of internet reviews on various models and the ratings seem to fluctuate wildly.
There is a model of the Mio (I think C520) that is super customizable via software, plays Divx files, MP3s, takes SD card, firmware can be easily upgraded.
I’d pick up one of those. Look to see if a better model (read: more tweakable) has replaced it.
I use the T-Man 5000.
Its only for cases where I’m really out of my element, like drivin down towards the city to see buddies I went to college with. I write some directions on a post it note, and stick it to my dash. It doesn’t talk or anything, but it gets the job done.
I know Garmin do some very good GPS systems. Can’t no experience with them but a buddy has one, and they seem to be very good.
I don’t know about particular models, but I can give you the lowdown on the big 2.
Garmin is probably the leading name, it has the most up to date points of interest, and the roads are probably more accurate than any other system and updated more frequently.
TomTom is a close second, and in 2 years of using it in various cities have only encountered 1 error with a road. It’s a great system, and I also managed to download an Ozzy instructional voice. It also has Mister-T, Sean Connery, and a horny hooker voice, but Ozzy wins hands down. “f-fu-fuckin left tur aheay!”
Ha! That is a feature I’d gladly pay for. Although with Ozzy’s mumbles directing you you’d be better off navigating with a sextant. I wonder if they have “Jimmy” from South Park? “T…ttttuuuu…ttuuurrr…turn l-left…very much!”
