Benching w/ Legs Up, Not Floor?

This topic was brought up in an article not too long ago.

The author had a few reasons why its best to have your feet on the ground during a bench press.

I have no idea what the name of it was but I think it was one of those articles that covered a few different topics. I don’t even remember who it was by lol sorry.

ok, i think we all can agree that its best to just put your feet on the ground.

I once watched some guy benching 135 with his feet up on the bench. He was convinced it worked his core better.

First of all you shouldn’t be worried about your core on chest day.

And second of all it was all I could do to not push him off the bench sideways.

Dont know about you guys but my impulse control deteriorates severely on cycle.

It was Poliquin

Benching with your legs up will transfer the majority of the tension from the lower chest (by far the more powerful) to the upper chest. your tricpes will be stressed more in order to compensate.

It will also have balancing limitations as it will actually be possible to fall off the bench. Not something you want to do while testing a 1RM.

Therefore your legs up bench will be weaker (and more dangerous) than your regular bench press.

i see many people doing it in the gym and the usual answer i’ll get is " it works the core" or “you use more muscle for the lift”
You use more muscle when you bench with your feet in the air?! These people have obviously never tried to bench with a tight arch and leg drive.

And about floor pressing…The floor press is an accessory exercise that is used to improve lock out. It is not benching on the floor.

I wear baggy shorts, put my feet up, and grunt real loud when I bench so passers-by have to eyeball my junk.

Putting your feet on the bench turns it into an incline press?

Who knew.

Good timing with this thread.

Today, I witnessed the dickery that is benching with your feet up in the air like a freakin’ dead cockroach.

Guy had a whopping 165# in the form of 4 25’s and 2 10’s on the bar and got a little tilted and dumped the bar to the side-- couldn’t get his legs to the floor quick enough. Luckily no one was walking by Mr. Dead Cockroach Douchebag at the time.

I don’t know about anyone else, but pressing with my feet on the bench is just counter intuitive, to me anyway, to the point where it never occurred to me to try it.

There’s things you see that elicit various responses and this was always one that left me with that “why?” look on my face

Funny I’m reading this thread just now… I’m doing personal trainer certification, and the IFPA manual advocates feet-elevated bench press for people with back problems… WTF?

For the back problems, the reason is so that the back doesn’t have an arch in it most likely, as this could probably aggravate peoples’ back problems.

That’s only a guess though and doesn’t seem to have a lot of backing since people naturally have somewhat of a curve in their spine.

Yeah, it’s called lordisis (kyphosis is the outer curve up higher), and we do all have it, to some extent. It didn’t mention any specific back problems, so who knows…

No need to even discuss this. Anyone who puts there legs up in the air while benching is very simply a moron. Unwilling to man up, put there feet on the ground, and put on more weight.

I was at the gym and i witnessed a guy doing this. I asked him why, because I agree it’s more of a hazard then a beneficial tool. He, who claimed to have a degree in this “shit” and was a strength coach informed me that he does it because he had lower back issues and theis helps him keep his back flat on the bench while benching and is therefore better for him.

IIS THIS TRUE? ( i imagine it was a lumbar spine problem maybe compacted discs i think he said) I never see him able to challenge himself with the weight because he puts his feet up so as far as getting much benefit from the lift is he getting any - couldnt he target the areas just using different lifts at a chellenging weight instead of doing bench press at all if it causes such a back problem…

Wait…where do you workout?

Maybe it was just me. I tried it a while back because my lower back was killing me. No pains with that exercise, although it wasn’t very productive and I ended up going home early. That was only once, and I have never benched with my feet up since.

Nope.

Ever see a floor press?
“Ever seen a grown man naked?” Airplane!

While I agree with the thread (benching with feet up = dumb) I felt I would be remiss if I did not mention one Rock Lewis, raw bencher extraordinaire (600 @ 242)

He advocates benching with the feet up for “more upper body control”.

Let the shitstorm begin. Moo hoo ha ha.
