I participate in a strength sport

but I also know pretty much nothing about anything in my sport

so the only way I can contribute to the strength sports section is to make bad jokes.

Again, it didn’t used to be that way before they got rid of the Olympic Press, which, with the lax judging standards really became a standing bench press, with a very large backwards lean. During those times (pre-1972) horizontal pressing strength was important for Olympic Weightlifting.

The late J.V. Askem, former coach of untimely deceased WSM competitor Jesse Marunde had a good page about the Olympic Press on his website (which is a damned good website).

Maybe your coach has lost a lot of Weightlifters to Powerlifting and is trying to scare you away from Bench.

If you never bench then he doesn’t have to worry about you picking up powerlifting and stopping weightlifting.

You are the goofier version of my asian friend Thomas. He’s a football player in my school, same physique as you… Only you’re alot stronger than him.

yeah back in the day pressing strength was huge when the standing press was a comp lift. But these days I reckon most athlete’s in OL would be hard pressed to find time for too much benching. I get some time in for floor presses but my OL program could not be described as intense in any way. Coach is cautious. Oh well.

And like i say pressing strength is still a huge thing but the horizontal factors can really be replaced with other things now.
