One, work the hell out of your military press. That seems to be more out of line with the rest of your lifts than your bench. The military press has been called “the squat of the upper body.” I agree with that.

I have to disagree here.

His military press is pretty proportionate to his bench, IMO. I bench around 390 and can only military press slightly over 200. Rarely working my shoulders directly might be the cause of that, but my bench isn’t exactly bad. That’s why I feel that hammering his tris and lats is more important than delts, especially at his stage of development.

Doh,

Have you tried Benching more frequently? Like 2x a week with one heavy (ME) day and one volume (rep) day. Or even 3x a week, with a lightish day in between. You can also try doing higher volume stuff for a while (3-4 weeks) and then switch to lower volume, but heavier weights. Check out CT’s “7 Tips” for guidelines on accumulation/intensification.

I guess it would depend on the person and the goal. Last time I maxed, my bench was 225 and my military press was 175, squat and deadlift were both 385. I had been focusing on military press more than bench press at the time. My max on bench is now probably around 250 but I doubt my military has changed much since I’ve been trying to bring up my bench.

I think I’m rambling now. I agree that tris and lats are probably more important right now but the military just seemed a little off to me.

IMHO, you cant really say that there is a general relationship between say military press and benchpress that is normal.

It really depends on not only a persons training but also their bone structure.

Some people are built for overhead pressing, some for pulling. I for one can miltary press over 200 pounds but my bench is still only 285… is that average?? probably not but honestly who is “average”
