BENCH PRESS

One thing that worked for me before I ever found this site was something kind of stupid, but it worked short term. I could do 225 for 10, so I did four sets of 225 the first week. The reps would be like 10, 9, 7, 6 or something. The next week, 235, and I nailed the first set for 10. I got up to 250 that way before some drama happened and I got off track.

However, I don’t think that’s the best way to go, logically. Listen to Goldberg.

Westside is a good place to start! You say that you read up on it in the past, so you don’t need to do a search because you understand the system. PPLLEEAAASSE!!! There is a shit-load of stuff out there written on Westside so I’m sure you can learn more. Even guys like Dave Tate, Simmons, etc. are always learning as they go along. Just the fact that you stated you already do a Westside style program with cleans and overhead presses shows you have much to learn. Your father has a herniated disk, therefore you can’t do good-mornings, and you are not flexible enough. Where’s the sense in that? You didn’t know what Big Martin was talking about when he referred to increasing speed yet this makes up 50% of the Westside program. How can you understand Westside if you don’t even know that? At 6’1" and roughly 160lbs lean mass, you need to add some muscle to your frame and Westside will definately help with this. What am I getting at?-Try the Westside program, but REALLY read up on it before you start and make sure you fully grasp the concept. There’s a great thread on it right now in this category with great advice from the likes of Goldberg and Big Martin. Read it, pronto!

ok i was gonna go easy on this guy until i went back and reread of of his posts. this is what that thread on the off topic is about. he dont have a clue and he wont be lifting in 6 months. guaranteed.

Okay, I know what Westside is (I’ve heard of it), and I’ve read a few articles by dave Tate as suggested by Patricia when I posted about back workouts, and I realize there’s a hell of a lot of information in the back issues as well as on the forums, the thread started by Char-Dawg for example. I’m relatively new to “structured” training and I’m DEFINITELY new to powerlifting, so can someone please suggest an article for me that won’t be way over my head and I’ll be able to understand. I’d say I wouldn’t mind giving Westside a try but I can’t say that until I understand exactly what it is and how it works.
All I’m looking for is someone to suggest where to START reading and I’ll do the rest myself.

Knight, how much was your previous bench ? The program isn’t suppose to give you strength in a short period like that. I bet something was lagging your bench, and OVT helped you bring it up.

bigmartin - thank you, I’ve been reading the “8 Steps” series but feel like I’ve missed something I should already know …I’ll go where you sent me.

Landon:

Probably, but isn’t that the essence of any lifting program? To improve a lagging part?

Undoubtedly there are better options than OVT, but I responded quite well to it. I was putting up something like 200 prior, 230 after, ~260 currently.

DI

HAHAHA!!! WOW GUYS! umm, actually thought I would get better advice from Golberg. Man, it’s not my problem you can’t read “I WENT BACK TO WHAT THIS GUY SAID…hahaha” what a crock of shit. And to the other guy…I DIDN"T CLAIM TO KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT WESTSIDE SYSTEM…putz >>(that would be loopfitt)! The quote was

“RIght now I don’t really have a set program. I did read about westside before, and am somewhat familiar with their program”…hmm…sounds like…exactly what I said…and hmm…exactly what I meant!

And when Goldberg started talking I just couldn’t staring at what he wrote. GOLDBERG!!! WHAT THE FUCK WERE YOU READING? you wrote…

“ok i was gonna go easy on this guy until i went back and reread of of his posts. this is what that thread on the off topic is about. he dont have a clue and he wont be lifting in 6 months. guaranteed.”

Listen guys, this is a public forum, and I stated that I’m scared to do goodmornings. “Just b/c my dad has a herniated disk…and i’m not flexible”—yeah…WITH YOUR PERMISSION CAN IT BE PSCHOLOGICAL???

And just drop the ‘speed’ thing. I reread his post and didn’t read it right the first time. I know speed plays a big part in this style.

For all those that gave me good advice, thanks a lot. I found that 50lb bench thing I was referred to and am starting that…and I read the whole WESTSIDE thread. THanks

You said you read the whole westside thread. There is some good info in that thread but you need to read ALL the articles if you want any kind of proficiency. What 50 lb program are you talking about?

Golberg, you should really watch yourselves and the ‘double standard’ you put out. Goldberg…good job critisizing me and being motivational (i mean the part about THIS GUY WON"T MAKE IT 6 MONTHS). BUT! On the other hand…you ask me what 50lb program when in this SAME thread wideguy wrote about it. I know you’re hardcore lifter but I’m just after some advice not an arguement so you don’t need to make it one.

I dont know why you put double standard in quotes. I didnt say that. I never inferred that. If you had really read the articles on here about Westside (theres only like ten or so, its not like you have to read a novel) you would know that Dave Tate totally trashed that program. Thats what i was talking about. you had just recieved some excellent information from bigmartin and a few others. then you go and do a cookie cutter program based on everything opposite of what bigmartin has told you. bigmartin is knowledgeable, certainly more knowledgeable than me, and you totally throw out what he said and go and get a program that one of the strongest guys in the world has said was a piece of crap. Thats why i said you wouldnt be doing this in six months. Because you cant listen. Thats not an arguement, its fact. I will help out anybody in the world who needs it. Do a poll of the people who have sent me questions on westside just in the past week. But for somebody like you that wont even do the basic groundwork to get strong, i have no sympathy for you whatsoever.
