Bench: Legs Behind, or Out in Front?

Hi all,

I’ve been using a powerlifting style bench for a while now, as it has placed much less stress on my shoulder. I like to keep my heels on the floor and prefer a slight arch–not very exaggerated. However, I tried placing my feet out in front of me instead of under my hips, and my reps felt a lot more explosive and clean. Why exactly might that be? It was my last few reps and I was fatigued–yet, I felt more powerful.

I’m asking because I’d like to know if I should switch to this position from now on.

Just a note, I do not compete and am just looking for the style that will allow me to make the best strength gains. I do, however, utilize a powerlifting-esque approach to my training as it has yielded the best results so far.

I’ve always felt better with my feet out in front. Just make sure your butt isn’t coming off the bench.

Yeah, I noticed it would be easier for my butt to come off the bench, but I’m certain I keep contact with the bench throughout. Thank you. By idea why this is? I imagine it has to do with leverages but I can’t find anything specific online about it.

Does it matter? It’s just biomechanics and limb lengths and leverages. For some people it will feel better. If it feels better for you, don’t question it, just go with it.

Haha okay, I hear ya. Thanks, man.
