Belfort-Silva is Off

this makes sense on a couple of levels. it’s not clear if sonnen will make it, but if maia wins they get to rematch maia and sonnen, if silva wins, then sonnen gets the next shot at anderson.

edit - by “make it” I mean be ready to fight in time

I’m more excited about Maia x Silva than Belfort x Silva. Maia should be able to tap out Silva, but if he tries to Stan with Anderson he will get KOd. Maia has probably learned his lesson from the Marquardt fight and will be wary of standing up. Silva of course will still be the favorite.

The only problem I see with this being a good match is that in order for mia to get the fight to where he can win he first has to:

A) Close the distance
B) Take Silva down
C) Not get knocked the fuck out

I see this going one of two ways. Either he’ll rush in like he did against marquart and get put down (unlikely), or he’ll pull a thales laites and be boring as all hell. Woohhoo another boring Silva fight. Give me a f’n break, give vitor a bionic shoulder and let’s do this shit right!

That’s pretty much my thoughts as well. Maia has the skill level to pull off a submission victory IF (and that’s a really big if) he can get the fight to where he needs it to be. But Maia has never been a tremendous takedown artist, Silva’s takedown defense has continued to improve, and Silva sure as hell isn’t going to give him a grappling match on purpose.

So, it’ll probably wind up looking like Leites vs Silva and ending with either a KO by Silva, or a really boring decision win by Silva. Maia is just too one dimensional to beat Anderson IMO.

Watch some Maia fights he has good TD’s and is good enough to pull guard and work a sub something Leites CANNOT do.

You’ve gotta get close enough to pull guard though, something that I don’t think he’s good enough to do. He’s a better submission guy than Leites, no argument there, but he’s far from a “superior” takedown artist, and definitely doesn’t have a “great” shot or great takedowns from a distance (which someone is going to have to have if they’re gonna take Anderson down, since he isn’t going to just let them walk into clinch range).

Maia’s got a submission artists chance, but the odds are against him.

Of course they are but it’s not impossible to take Silva down he’s not BJ Penn.

Agreed.

Belfort is awesome but every time he wins his corner acts like they liberated a country. I always admire the winners that have no need to parade themselves after the fight.

Tank may not have the best record but he never had an axe to grind and would leave his victories secure enough to not need aknowledgement. Same with Frank Shamrock.

I’m going to forgive this because you were obviously high when you wrote it. Or you just got done with a grueling training session, and your senses had left you.

You’re fucking kidding right?

It’s unfortunate Nate had to lose to Sonnen. This would be a perfect opportunity for him to rematch Silva. Plus, Nate is one of my favorite middleweights, and has been on quite the role until this recent stoppage. Hopefully he can get his shit back together and learn to fight off his back.

i never thought about this aspect, but you’re right…nate couldn’t have lost at a worse point in his career

While Maia is certainly a better pure submission fighter than Thales and much more crafty, Thales despite his complete non performance against Silva, he had an iron chin and some decent stand-up power. Maia has neither and is tailor made for Silva to beat… I don’t think Silva has any reason not to let his hands, feet and other knockout inducing limbs go: Silva by KO in the second or third.

I got Silva by KO late in the first. It really depends on the pace Demian will go and if he’ll be willing to engage with Silva. Look at the Lutter, Henderson, Marquardt, Griffin or Irvin fight. Maia can go out in any of those ways. I just dont see him being able to threaten Silva anywhere.

I train with Demian Maia and to be honest, if he expects to submit Silva while he couldn’t even take Miller down he will be in one HELL of a night.

I really hope Demian doesn’t try to trade blows with Silva and i’m pretty sure he won’t be able to take him down too.

He did get Miller down and I guarantee Miller’s wrestling is better than Andersons.

BJ is my fav fighter too…
