When I am involved in Meltdown Part I training, should I be drinking Surge during and post-workout? Or is it a better idea to take some BCAA’s prior to the training and then take in a ton of whey and L-glutamine immediately after? I am at about 14% bodyfat, 180 pounds… what’s a good recommendation? What was everyone else doing with their supplementation during Meltdown?
i was wondering the same thing - anybody try Alessi’s recommendations of glutamine and protein instead of Surge post workout for us tubby bastards?
bump? any experiences?
I used protein and glutamine as my postworkout shake while on meltdown. I was also using MD6, T2 pro, and Methoxy. In 5 weeks I went from 14% bodyfat at 170 to 9% bodyfat at 170
Paul, your results have grabbed my attention. Can you give me the low down on your training and diet, I made good progress, but not that good. I was using MD6 twice a day substituting ALA for the third serving(sleep probs). Along with MD6 and ALA I used a protein which I mixed with a bit of Gatoraid in powder form for pre and post instead of surge. Creatine was the only other supplement I used. Any info would be appreciated.
Paul, how did you figure on how much protein and glutamine to use post-workout? Do you recommend any certain brands? I’m dying to know the answer to this…
Yeah, Paul, I second that request. Also, please provide your age, number of years training, etc. Nice results!
I was also curious about glycerol as Don Alessi’s post-workout recommendation.
Okay, lets see: I followed the fat burning protocol posted on T-Mags site, as well as a ketogenic diet. Past experience has taught me that I am pretty carb-intolerant, so to really lean out, I have to restrict my carb intake to less than 30 grams on non-training days. I basically followed the T-dawg diet that was in the 1st paper issue, and supplemented with fish oils and CLA. I followed the two Meltdown protocols, except that I didn’t do the p.m. workouts during phase 2. When I emailed Don about my results, he suggested that I spend a week doing the phase 1 exercises for a single set of 25 reps, and then return to the phase 1 program, and that I should get even better results. I was already into a new training cycle, so I haven’t had the chance to do so. If any of you guys do try it, post the results.
I’m 31 years old, and I’ve been training since I was 15, but it wasn’t until '94 when I started to make real progress. Back then, MM was actually worth reading, and that’s where I started learning about diet and supplementation.
I used Grow! and EAS glutamine, as well as the MD6 protocol. I also followed the glutamine recommendations in the 1st paper issue. The protein reccomendations I got from the T-dawg diet. When it comes to supplements, Biotest is my first choice, followed by EAS for creatine and glutamine, with Twinlab for Fish oils and vitamins. CLA I get from a few different sources. I think T.C. wrote an article about CLA, and reccomends a few brands.
One other thing: I’m a mixed twitch fiber person, and recently I’ve been experimenting with different rep brackets to stimulate the fibers. Don Alessi had a really good point in his reactive strength article about the rep selection. Ian King has also talked about rep selection as it relates to training age. I’ve done a lot of Poliquin routines over the years, and in general, I’ve found the rep brackets that he recommends a little bit low for me. Best of luck on the program!!
Did Don Alessi advocate a week of 25 reps as a recovery week? I mean, did you do Phase 1 exercises 3x per week with ultra-light weight and high reps in order to take a break from the intensity of the program? Also, I was curious what the glutamine recommendations from paper issue #1 were, I don’t have it.
I’m not sure why he reccomended that particular follow up. Like I said, I was already into a new cycle when he told me about it, so I haven’t had the chance to try it. If I remember correctly, the glutamine reccomendations were 10-15 grams for low stress, 15-25 grams for moderate stress, and 25-40 grams for high stress, divided into 5 gram dosages. I was on the upper end of the reccomendations, about 30-40 grams per day.
Fello T-man, Can anybody point me to Alessi’s recommendation of protein and glutamine instead of surge for tubby bastarts like me please?. I’ve searched plenty and can’t find it. Thanks.
My 2 Weeks results with Surge post workout:

Had bodycomp done today. 222# 11.89% bodyfat. I actually gained 9# of lean mass and dropped 3# of fat!! I'm thrilled with the results so far. Best I've ever done, so quickly.
Yesterday I dropped the Tribex and M and switched to a 2 week cycle of Mag-10 2 servings per day. I'll post the results in 2 weeks if anyone is interested. I'm starting week 3 of Meltdown I which I will repeat for an additional week, then swithcing to a 5x5 program.
