well… I don’t recommend ed coan unless you are looking for a punishment. I’m just finished week 5 and its fucking hard.
x10000000 on the form thing. I hurt my back a while back from deadlifting with absolutely atrocious form. But that’s far in the past and now I’m pulling heavy. I myself got over 400 by just working up to a heavy single once a week. Not exactly ideal, but for a beginner (deadlifter at least) you don’t need a whole lot to get stronger.
Pinto: This is a stupid question, but can you cycle that program indefinitely? I’m definitely going to give that a try sometime in the future.
Is there any good way to gauge how much to add to the bar every time when we’re working up to heavy singles (and trying to surpass last week’s PR)? It could be dangerous if someone over-estimated and had a form breakdown right? Especially for a beginner.
When I started I Deadlifted once per week, 8/6/6/5/5/5 big jumps at the start smaller jumps at the 5’s, ran it like that for a few years with a few peaks, when you cant get required reps for 2 week in a row drop back 40lb and start adding 5lb per week.
Eg
200 x 8
275 x 6
310 x 6
360 x 5
390 x 5
420 x 5
first three sets are easy. Like I said I did this for quite a while (years) However I would do lower reps for warm ups now, 5/3/1 is a great set up for the dead even if you dont do the rest.

BC- which meet is that in your avatar? The side judge looks like an occassional training partner of mine, James Williams. He sometimes spots and judges at SPF meets.
It’s the 2009 SPF Cellblock Classic that was in Nashville.
Oh shit- I was there. I got stuck in traffic on the way there and couldn’t do the full meet, but I benched. Fun time.
