Begin...The Rest is Easy

Push Press test

Shoulder warmup
Pull-ups: 3x6 (2 pronated, 1 supinated)
Back extensions: 2 x 10
Push Press: 135 x 5, 185 x 3, 205 x 3, 225 x 2, 245 x 1, 265 x 1, 275 x 1, 225 3 x 3
Trap smith machine upright complex 95lbs x 3:
wide grip x 10
medium grip x 10
close grip x 10
Smith row: 135 x 10, 185 x 10, 235 x 10

Push press felt good, considering my lack of experience with it. I wasn’t quite tight enough on 275 and didn’t generate enough momentum but I got it all the way overhead, lockout definitely was super sketchy though, good enough for me to count atm. The 225 work was just heavy technique practice that got better with each set. Will use this on my next 5/3/1 block for supplemental instead of OHP. Got a few comments from gym goers that were amusing. One was a guy grinning his ass off who said “I see you big dog” and another was right after 275 who said something to the effect of “Jesus, that’s impressive I thought you were squatting.” Think with some more reps I’ll be able to push this number up pretty quickly, 3 plates may be there by the end of the year.

Smith machine numbers are assuming the bar is 45, which it isn’t but I don’t really care that’s just assistance work. That trap complex (stolen from somewhere like 10 years ago) is insane, nothing is better bang for the buck for traps imo.

Supinated pull-ups still caused a tiny amount of pain but it seems the supinated pull aparts are having some positive impact.

Going to try to get a peloton and a pump workout tonight and a morning conditioning session in before I drive to get on another cross-country flight.

Awesome push press!

I hope to deadlift that weight sometime this year

lol what’s your estimated max, at the moment?

I occasionally test the waters with my partner to see if she wants to get into lifting and am rebuked every time. I tried a few nights ago and got to some point where I was saying it was feasible for her to deadlift 400lbs (she’s 60ish kg) but then looked at the world records and realized she would be freaky competitive if she did and rolled it back :frowning_with_open_mouth:

Dude that’s a strong push press you definitely had more in you.

Thanks dude! I don’t know though, I considered upping it another 10lbs but honestly I got stuck a bit before lockout on that one and had to power through. Little more technique and brace and we’ll see.

Was a fatigued 245 some weeks ago. Probably more or less the same right now.

Ahaha, I always laugh when I read posts from men who wish their partner would join some hobby of theirs. Though in general I don’t bother recommending things to people anymore. If I do, I don’t expect them to actually try them.

How long did you think that would take? Not implying that it’s impossible by any means. Women have been shaking up the lifting world in the past decade or so (and even longer than that; see Jen Thompson).

You going to try and peak to get to 275 then?

I don’t really want her to join my hobby tbh, I like separation in that regard. She’s just usually stressed about something and I try and point her stress in the same direction as mine, at physical activity.

I listened to some of the German and Russian Indie bands you recommended but point well taken. I generally don’t recommend things because I don’t like much that I assume others will.

I mean, I didn’t expect it to be instantaneous, I was thinking in the years timeframe but yea a littttttle optimistic to say the least. Women are kicking ass and taking names in the powerlifting world though, dominating the dots metric.

If I do, not anytime soon. I like to think it is possible without going all-in on deadlifts.

Oh yeah, I think I maybe wrote that as if it is cultish or something. I feel like some of my hobbies/interests are dominated by men, so I find it interesting.

Nice, now did you listen to all of Foxing’s discography yet?

I don’t recommend things to my music-savvy friends. It seems like self-discovery appeals to people more often than not, and a lot of things are that way for me. So, generally no suggestions from me unless someone explicitly asks.

Definitely, I find it useful to test top-end strength occasionally but it definitely isn’t necessary to build it.

Lifting definitely losing it’s male bias but I suspect it’s still weighted heavily towards men, this forum being piece of evidence #1. I’m trying to think what your other hobbies are that might be male dominated. Music, kinda? Running, is that even a hobby? Languages, not really sure how that plays out, never been deeply enough involved. Not sure if any of your work spans into hobby territory but that would make sense.

Nice, now did you listen to all of Foxing’s discography yet?

lmao no, I got Draw Down the Moon and The Albatross down a few times then got distracted by a few new albums and am currently stuck on Sylvan Esso’s Free Love. I’ll probably roll back there at some point though.

Didn’t do an extra workout and attempted a bench max this morning.

Axle bench: 120 x 10, 210 x 8, 260 x 4, 300 x 3, 330 x 2, 350 x 1, 380 x 1, 400 x 0.

Not far from getting it, I’m 100% convinced I’m strong enough to hit this after giving it a shot but I don’t have enough of a buffer to have a few things off and still hit it. My form was a bit wacky until 350, which I absolutely smoked. My left foot slipped on 380 so my brace fell apart but still got it up without much of a grind. Got a decent way up 400 but ran out of steam.

Things that have changed/things I want to improve on for next time:

New low weight: 282
No food, about 5 calories worth of coffee
5 hours of sleep
Morning workout
Descent to the chest was a bit off, was losing brace on a few sets
Not as good of an arch on 400 as 380

All in all I’m not really worried about this, it was the first time I’ve loaded this and I’m confident with a few more blocks I’ll have it in the bag.

Took videos of the last two sets, might post them when I have a min. Off to a wedding in Cali now, going to try and coordinate some work and buying a house from there, going to be rough.

Lifting is definitely the biggest one. I think my music tastes and showgoing habits are pretty evenly split. I guess most of my other hobbies are also fairly gender neutral: reading, language learning, writing, photography, hiking (as if I can do that seriously where I live), and solo travel. But a lot of topics that interest me, like digital privacy, slow fashion, personal finance, etc., and some things I read are more male-dominant in my experience.

I work in a STEM field, but it’s related to biology, so the gender ratio is not super skewed.

What a pity! Especially when most people, fans and critics alike, consider Nearer My God their best work. No pressure.

I’m not a huge Arcade Fire fan, but their new singles are bops.

Super benching! You’re not far from 400 if you can’t already do it under ideal conditions.

I’m waiting for a friend in the airport, I’ll listen now.

FYI, this is what that album reminds me which is a large part of the reason I haven’t listened yet

Yep, thanks for checking in.

Went to San Francisco/Sonoma from Thursday to 1:30 am Tuesday morning. Drank too much Thursday-Saturday and didn’t sleep until after 3 last night. Assuming I get more than a few hours of sleep tonight I’ll go in and get a workout in, might give myself a buffer session or might just run FSL again. In any case, should be back to regular within a few days.

Just what the doctor ordered, definitely still tired and stiff from the trip but this got the blood flowing without killing me. Plan on doing some vest walking or peloton riding today. Have a ton of meat in the fridge that needs to be cooked and consumed, excited to get back into the flow of things.

Just took a 25 min walk with the 64lb weight vest. First 10 minutes I was breathing a bit heavy, allergies kicking my ass on top of the weight vest, but not really noticeably different. Last 15 minutes I understood the allure, cardio started getting taxed and my whole upper back started lighting up, couldn’t wait to take the thing off.

Supposed to be dry tomorrow, will use it on one of the dog walks.

Back at it

Box jumps: 4x5
Shoulder warmup
Prowler: 2 pushes, 2 pulls
Hip flexor stretches, good mornings
Pull-ups: 8, 5, 5
Squats: bar x 10, 145 x 8, 235 x 4, 285 x 5, 330 x 5, 370 x 5, 285 5 x 5
KB single arm press: 30 x 20, 18, 12
Cable low row: 100 x 20, 18, 12

This didn’t feel great, strength was fine but was exhausted by it. Combo of weight loss, tiredness, and lack of food probably a bit of dropped conditioning too. Maybe abs tonight, already got a couple mile hike this morning.

In other news I bailed on the house after the inspection. Had a minimum set of demands and the sellers didn’t want to meet them. Disappointed but it was going to cost me 10s of thousands of dollars and a lot of time to get everything fixed or contracted out. Will probably just rent until we leave ithaca, meh.

Push press tomorrow

Aw man, sorry the house didn’t work out for you guys.

It’s alright, I made the call which was rough but I’m convinced I did the right thing economically and in terms of stress management. It will set us up better to buy in a more expensive market, in all likelihood and keep us much further from the brink of economic disaster.
