Took the dog for a few mile walk and jogged for 7 or 8 minutes to loosen up the legs and get the lungs working, felt pretty good.
Friend came over so I did a bit of legs even though they felt pretty worked.

Might do some pull throughs later but everything felt good today so I might not push it. Things moving in the right direction, gf should figure out if she gets accepted into a program tomorrow, so have a stressful stretch coming up, bleh.
Well, she got into one of the best schools in the world in an incredibly competitive program that only takes one resident a year, which is great news. I’m not super jazzed about the location or time commitment (it’s 1 year longer than most equivalent programs) but it’s a great opportunity for her and will lead to financial stability going forward, potentially without needing an income from me. I really didn’t think she would match at this program so I’m kind of in shock but fuck it, it’s a new adventure to a place i’ve never been in a region I’ve barely seen.
Going to go stare at a corner for a few hours then get to work.
Dude, I have no fucking idea. It’s kind of cool but it’s uprooting my life and giving me way more fucking responsibility for the next 4 years but she wants to do it, will be able to work remotely when she is finished, and she’s going to make $$$. I’m going to book a flight out to Ithaca, Ny (where we’ll be) in a few weeks I think so I can go check it out.
Same, I spent like 6 jet-lagged hours in Manhattan and 3 days in Brooklyn. A private residency in Manhattan wanted her but they would’ve paid her like 32k per year for 3 years living in one of the most expensive places on earth, I vetoed that shit real quick.
Ithaca looks pretty and seems like people like it but I’ve pretty much only lived in cities (Vegas, Seattle, Greater Salt Lake area, Stockholm) so moving to a “city” of 30k with a ton of students is going to be fucking weird.
Upstate NY is a whole other animal vs. the City, it’s beautiful and the people are great! (not saying anything bad about the people in the City, of course). Snow on the ground for 5-6 months out of the year takes some getting used to, and the quantity of snow you get from the lake effect is an eye-opener. I lived outside of Saratoga Springs for 4 years back in the 90’s while I was in the Navy, some of the best years of my life!
Great! Thanks for commenting, I have very few friends in the region so the more info the better! I saw that it got about 5 feet of snow a year which will definitely be a change of pace for me.
Have calmed down about the move today, was freaking out most of the day yesterday but I spent about 8 hours reading about Ithaca. The housing market is bizarre, there is very little to buy and renting seems shitty there (not surprising given its college town nature), will probably fly out in May to see where we want to live there.
Shoulder routine, some chest flies, some bar hangs, 25 jumping jacks to warmup.
NYer here… I know I’ve written about ithaca in your log before too.
Cool place, beautiful in all seasons if you can deal with the cold and snow. Lots of places to hike and tons of trails. You can hop around for day trips to basically all of the finger lakes. Rent party boats and hang on the water, fishing, ice fishing, TONS of breweries and wineries.
Unfortunately if you’re used to a high population density, busy streets and busy people it’s going to be a bit of a change. There isn’t a large city center anywhere near ithaca, or the entirety of WNY in general (only buffalo, rochester and syracuse are what I count as legitimate “cities”, and they’re nothing like the large city centers you’re probably used to).
There are a lot of small towns and hamlet’s around ithaca within decently close driving distance that I’m sure have a better housing market so you might want to check in the surrounding areas and commute. Plus, no people=no traffic.
As far as winter weather, sometimes it’s bad. This year (so far) has been a breeze. Couple days of 8+ inches but other than that, pretty clear. The past few years March has been the worst month for winter weather, where I am at least. Better start looking into some snow tires, though. They’re a life saver.
Thanks for weighing in, the more I hear about Ithaca from people around there the better I feel. I am not much of a fisher but I grew up fishing with my dad on the regular and have gone a few times around Seattle, think I’ll actually have to buy a pole and see if I can do some damage. In general, I think i underestimated the amount of outdoor activity around the region, it seems like I won’t have a lack of things to do.
I don’t even know if I am a city person, I don’t live directly in the city center or anything, i’m just used to people and amenities but I don’t really like the crowded aspect so I think it’ll be a breath of fresh air. Likewise, growing up in the desert completely skewed my version of cold and humid but I honestly haven’t hated the cold places I’ve lived in, the length and grayness of the winter is much more annoying than the cold but not much to be done about that.
I’ve already talked to my boss and they’ll rent me a desk at a coworking space there, so I’ll have some human interaction.
Yeah the grey and snow can be a soul crusher sometimes. Makes the sunny days that much better though. I’m not terribly far from there. I live in a suburb of one of the cities mentioned above. Close enough to be able to make a day trip out of going down there.
They had a pretty cool music scene before covid hit too. I ended up going to a few shows there for some national acts at this old converted theatre. Pretty badass.
Nice, the music scene and outdoors are my favorite parts of Seattle, seems like I won’t be missing too much of that with the move. If I recall correctly, you listened to some music that I liked, so hopefully we can get shows going again this year!
Yep. Born and raised. I live the farthest from where I grew up/was born now at about 15 miles. I accidentally had a kid young, and accidentally got a really good job, so now I’m stuck. I hate Alabama so much. When I go places like Colorado and the like, I usually cry a little when I have to return. I can’t begin to express how much I hate it. If I had no children, I’d quit my job tomorrow and leave.
6 and 8. Don’t get me wrong, I love them, I’m just saying they are the only reason I’m still here lol. Maybe one day they’ll realize their mom is a horrible person and wanna come stay with me, THEN we move outa this hell hole
Congrats on your partner’s placement! While I would also not happily pack up my things to move to Ithaca, I think especially right now a change of scenery can be pleasant. Maybe you’ll like it more than you think. It will be gorgeous in autumn.
