Beetroot, Super Food?

Sorry if this has already been posted. Just wondered what you think, its sounds good to me, but I’m no nutritionist.

Beets are great for you, but the thought of drinking a half liter during exercise makes my stomach churn. Oh, and if you drink enough, the betacyanin will turn your urine red.

I’ll mix a small amount of beets with a salad (lots of potassium and magnesium), but for workouts my money is buying Surge WOF.

I would look to other sources for nutritional info besides Yahoo.

Okay, now that my smart ass answer is out of the way, I read the article, and it looked interesting, but I don’t know if this is really all that practical at this point unless you can buy beetroot powder somewhere, which actually I think it is produced since beetroot is a natural color agent for food products.

From a science perspective I would say there are other ways to accomplish the same effect, one being PUFAs (omega 3s) which also reduce O2 consumption, although I’m not saying that beetroot is in any way inferior or not as potentially (in the future) as practical.

This gives some warnings about nitrate/nitrite as a performance enhancer: http://jap.physiology.org/cgi/pdf_extract/107/5/1677
