@Koestrizer - Not exactly the right thread, but speaking of…

I confess that I took no small amount of pride in myself when I overheard the following exchange between two boys in my daughter’s class while at a school function recently:

Boy 1: Hey <Boy 2>, check it out: that dude is jacked!
Boy 2: Hm? Oh yeah—that’s <daughter’s name>'s dad.

We’re still several years away from dating—just imagine what I could look like by then!

There’s a time and a place for joy in intimidation, haha.

Haha agreed, dude. You should be proud to have them talking about you like that!

While I’m posting content not strictly related to training… My son wanted to know what Canis dirus is, and we stumbled on this yesterday:

Not sure what it’s from, but it’s two of my favorite things—the Dire Wolf and the Prowler—all wrapped up in one ghastly beast! I also love the text:

Large as horses, dire wolves must hunt often to satisfy their ravenous hunger. A mere human does little more than blunt their appetite.

(Yes, I push a sled, not a prowler, but you get the idea.)

Friday - 21 January 2022
Workout: Bench, 0750-0850 (60 minutes)

Warm-up
Throws + jumps

Begin: 0808; End: 0844; Duration: 36 minutes
Bench - 95x5, 120x5, 145x5 | 170x5, 195x5, 225x5 | 130x(40+10) (rep PR)
HLR - 20, 20, 20
Standing DB press - 2x35 lbs - 18, 12
Pull-up - BW - 13, 13, 4
Push-up - red - 30
BFP - red - 30

Assistance totals:
Push - 60 reps
Pull - 60 reps
Single-leg/core - 60 reps

Got all 50 in a single rest-pause! Was going to be content with 40 in one set, but as soon as I realized I should at least try to get the last 10, so left it there for 15 seconds and then knocked 'em out. The pump was excruciating, but that’s pretty much par for the course these days.

Rest of it was pretty good today. Felt much better this morning than I did yesterday—that says I did my job in the kitchen well enough. Still wanting to collapse 30 pull-ups into two sets, but I just can’t seem to get past 12 or 13 reps quite yet. I’ll get there, though.

I’ll do some burpees, air squats, sit-ups, and chin-ups/pull-ups as daily work later, followed by Pwn’s The Last Castle. It’s only 10 degrees Fahrenheit and already we’re near the high for the day, so that’ll be some real fun!

Man that sounds awful but it’s no problem for you bro! Keep crushing it!

Friday - 21 January 2022
Workout: Hard conditioning, 1200-1355 (55 minutes)

Not as Easy as It Looks
Juarez Valley with 7 chin-ups/pull-ups (strict, various grips) between rounds
8, 1, 7, 2, 6, 3, 5, 4
a) 1-pump burpees
b) Air squats
c) Sit-ups
Time: 11:45

Pwn’s The Last Castle in a 28-kg weighted vest - 6 rounds
a) Farmer’s walk - 25 yards - 2x77 lbs
b) 6 alternating DB snatches - L/R - 35 lbs
c) Farmer’s walk - 25 yards - 2x77 lbs
d) 10 KB swings - 24 kg
Time: 19:02

Gave myself a pass today: absolutely crushed The Last Castle this week, so even though my goal is technically AMRAP in 20 minutes, I stopped once I completed the 6th despite the fact that I could’ve made it part way through a 7th in the 58 seconds that remained (and which I then would have finished). So six full rounds in a little over 19 minutes, which beats last week by 1:41. Yeah, okay—I was lazy. (But really I was totally dead.)

That daily work circuit was harder than it looked on paper (I’ve said that before!), and the JV rep scheme is interesting—the chins come around really quickly with those low-rep rounds! I managed to get all 7 reps each time without dropping, so that was cool.

That’s it for today. Back at it again tomorrow!

It was, haha!

Breathing hard always sucks, but it’s even worse when the air is cold—though the sun was shining and it was a balmy 19 degrees by the time I did the outside work, so… Easy peasy, right?

I always like to take into consideration all the studies that talk about the impact of cold weather on brown fat. Training in that sort of environment just makes you hard in body and spirit.

Have you come across the studies regarding how cold exposure (including sleeping in cooler temp) could potentially result in white fat becoming brown fat?

I haven’t read any sort of study on fitness since about 2005, haha. So maybe? You gotta keep in mind: I practice solipsism. So irrespective of what studies say or don’t say, I know my own reality.

I don’t know of any particular studies, but I was trying to learn about brown fat after it came up in @kdjohn’s log awhile back, and I recall reading somewhere that this is true (anecdotally, at least).

I really like this one. I did it once, but now have a Farmer’s Walk handle (just one, so I guess it’s a suitcase carry). I need to put this back in the rotation.

Yeah, it’s awesome. I used to do both my sled pushes and my Farmer’s walks continuously, which are effective in their own way, but after reading this one in Pwn’s Little Book, I’ve taken to breaking up the there-and-back with other moves.

And of course the weighted vest adds another element of suck, too!

Even so, I’d rather be weak and pudgy and train in the brisk 65 degree NorCal winters. :slightly_smiling_face:

That said, I remember, when living in PA, running when it was so cold I had to cover my face and mouth with a running scarf. I also remember running snowy trail races in the dead of winter, where you’d slide down a snowy hill to cross the finish line. (Actually, that last thing sounds kinda cool). I even used to do the polar bear plunges in the frigid river.

Now, if it dips below 65 I just put on my slippers and pajama pants, nudge up the thermostat, and complain.

Where in PA, if you don’t mind me asking?

I’m there rn
I cannot wait to get out of pissburgh…

I’d rather not train at all you maniac, haha

I was in the middle of PA, a bit closer to Philly than, as Anna calls it, Pissburgh. Not far from Williamsport. Middle of of nowhere, but you could buy 5 houses for the price one in the Bay Area.

That’s near Lewisburg, where Bucknell is, IIRC. Beautiful area.

Edit: And yeah, this:
