Becoming Canis dirus - SvenG's Training Log

You know Bucknell?

I must say though, the cold isn’t nearly as bad as I expected or remembered.

I really enjoy sleeping in a freezing room (haven’t turned the heater on yet. It’s been really great for sleep quality

Having my hands and feet go completely numb was quite the experience though

Wait, this is an option? Sign me up!

I do. Had colleagues there in CS, while I was in academia. Think they’ve moved on to industry as well by now. But it’s a great school in any case!

That’s only because you forgot how nice it is to be in good weather.

I lived within a couple of miles at Bucknell and have lots of friends on the faculty. (in fact, I was on the faculty there for many years).

I was in FL for all of the pandemic and most of winter break. I miss the weather there…

Honestly, I’m more bothered by rain and wind (high correlation btw the two) than anything.

There hasn’t been much rain in pissburgh lately so I’m a pretty happy camper.

That will definitely change in March. Idk what I’m going to do then

Sorry if you’ve addressed this elsewhere before, but is it just the weather in Pgh you don’t like, @anna_5588? Or is there something more about the city that you just don’t like?

it’s just the weather.

I don’t know enough about the city.
I think I’ve left campus maybe three times

No car, right? Not that driving in Pgh is enjoyable, but public transport isn’t the greatest. Certainly limits your options.

honestly, it’s because I’m lazy. I have a LOT of time, it just feels daunting to walk past the tepper building or get on the bus.

I wouldn’t say that… But I hear you!

I am incredibly lazy when it comes to “living”- ie skincare, entertainment, getting dressed
The effort just doesn’t feel worth it to me

In regards to going out, I have a hard time enjoying what I’m doing. I’d literally spend the entire time either listening to a podcast of thinking about econ

Forever(-ish) BBB - c8w2d7

Saturday - 22 January 2022
Workout: Easy conditioning + calves, 0835-0950 (75 minutes)

Seated CR - 220 lbs - 25, 20, 15
Weighted vest walk - 28 kg - 35 minutes
BB curls - 101

Fasted. Slept until 0600 this morning, had a false start at 0700—did 25 calf raises and got interrupted. Back at it about 1.5 hours later, started over (so technically I did sets of 25, 25, 20, and 15 on those calf raises, but whatever), and got it all in. 101 curls today, just because.

Outdoor thermometer said 4 degrees Fahrenheit, weather app said 2 degrees, but either way, it was cold…

Daily work and some conditioning later.

Saturday - 22 January 2022
Workout: Extra conditioning, 1410-1445 (35 minutes)

Jump rope tabata - 4x40/10 - 1 round

5 rounds of:
a) 10 deficit RDLs - 115 lbs
b) 10 KB swings - 24 kg
c) 11 chin-ups/pull-ups (strict, various grips)
Time: 15:08

Jump rope tabata - 4x40/10 - 1 round

Very preoccupied today, couldn’t get up for this one mentally. Did the work though, so that’s a win.

Circuit wasn’t about time, just about a big stretch, explosive swings, and solid chin-up/pull-up reps. Pretty happy with the those, actually: 11, 11, 9+2, 11, 8+3.

The daily chins are really just a way to get some extra volume, but I think more reps over fewer rounds is good, even if there’s more rest between—helps to reinforce the expectation that I will hit those higher rep counts without dropping.

Forever(-ish) BBB - c8w2 - summary

Not much to say, really. Hit my goals for the week, set squat and deadlift rep PRs again, got a new one with bench, too. I think shoveling snow on Monday left me worse off than I initially realized, as I woke up the next several mornings feeling like garbage. But I finally started eating really big on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and I woke up each of the following mornings feeling pretty good. Funny how that works, huh?

Goals for this week are:

  • Complete all 4 lifting workouts
  • Complete 2 days of hard conditioning
  • Complete 5 days of easy conditioning
  • Complete 3 days of direct calf work
  • Do 52 chin-ups/pull-ups and 50 somethings every day
  • Continue to eat properly

Really want to crush the top sets this week, as I’m planning to cycle the weights up in the 7WP, Deload that will precede a 5s PRO, 5x5 FSL anchor. After that, I’m looking at a couple BBB cycles using FSL weights—maybe at the anchor weights, maybe cycling up again. We’ll have to see how things are moving once I get there.

Whatever sad soul says 5/3/1 doesn’t work needs to take a look at this log.

Thanks, bro! I definitely feel like it’s working well for me.

Edit: To be fair, I like to think my work ethic has something to do with it, too. By that I mean: 5/3/1 is awesome, but if a person attacks any program intensely and consistently, their body will have no choice but to respond. 5/3/1 clicks with me, so even though I hate training, it makes me want to go hard when it’s time to work.

LOL! You are the master of understatement! I’d say those PRs are definitely something worth talking about! Congratulations! I’m so very happy for you, and dead jealous!
