Becoming Canis dirus - SvenG's Training Log

Congrats on this. That must have been mentally tougher than it was physically to keep going up and down for those

I think that’s a good way to go about it. I definitely want to try it one day.

I “enjoyed” it. I still have unfinished business though: I never did get that final set of squats.

For sure, dude—Boring… But Big?

@Bagsy, @dagill2 - Thanks for the info. The book is pretty cheap, so I might pick it up out of curiosity, whether I ever run it or not!

Apologies for not tagging you in the first place. I definitely remember you having done it in the past. Maybe we should all run MMS together later in the year given your unfinished business.

I’d like to point out that the heart is absolutely not a legally binding contract, because it really doesn’t fit with my goals at the minute. But I’ve never managed to “play along at home” with anyone, so it’s tempted.

This year is still young.

Workout: Extra conditioning, 1400-1430 (30 minutes)

Some Kind of Bad Idea
a) Devil’s presses - 2x30 lbs - 10, 9, 8, …, 2, 1
b) Alternating DB snatch - L/R - 35 lbs - 5 + 5, 5 + 5, 4 + 4, 4 + 4, …, 1 + 1, 1 + 1
c) Chin-ups/pull-ups (strict, various grips) - 6, 6, 6, …, 6, 6
Time: 22:47

It’s been busy around here: shoveled snow from 1115-1245, along with AMRAP of, “Why don’t I own a snowblower?” One 10-minute break in there, so really about 80 minutes of activity.

Ate lunch, much bigger than usual—1/2-lb of ham, something close to that of chicken breast. Chicken was a bit dry, so I had to coax it down with some BBQ sauce (!).

Could feel the shoveling fever setting in (or maybe it was squat fever?), so I laid down on the couch for about a half-hour—didn’t fall asleep but wasn’t fully conscious, either. Hey, don’t judge me: it’s a day off work, right?

Once I roused, I knew if I didn’t do it immediately, it wouldn’t get done, so I forced myself out from under the blanket, stripped down, and went straight into this craziness…

Weird rep scheme, but I quickly realized 10, 9, …, 2, 1 snatches per arm wasn’t going to happen fast enough, so I made the call to do half the reps per arm in each round, with the total rounded to even (10 → 5 + 5, 9 → 5 + 5, 8 → 4 + 4, …). Ended up with 55 devil’s presses, 30 snatches per arm, and 60 chins across the 10 rounds. Not sure I like devil’s presses paired with snatches—though I can’t say why, really; maybe just because I’m kinda dead at the moment?—but it did the job.

Weighted vest walk is going to have to wait: 80 minutes of shoveling and I’m about half-way done. Mrs. SvenG can get her car out, but it has to be fully cleared by morning or I won’t be going anywhere. I really don’t want to still be shoveling tomorrow, so… Hi-Ho! Hi-Ho! It’s off to work I go!

Edit: Update at 1730—the driveway is finally clear, and I am absolutely toast. I will now owe myself a weighted vest walk, probably with interest, because it’s just not happening today.

Workout: Press, 1115-1210 (55 minutes)

Warm-up
Throws + jumps

Begin: 1131; End: 1207; Duration: 36 minutes
Press - 50x5, 65x5, 80x5 | 95x5, 105x5, 120x5 | 70x(25+6), 70x(12+7)
Ab wheel - ramp (14) - 25, 20, 15
Incline DB press - 2x60 lbs - 20, 10
Chin-up - BW - 15, 15
Band pushdown - red - 30
BFP - red - 30

Assistance totals:
Push - 60 reps
Pull - 60 reps
Single-leg/core - 60 reps

Weird morning—more snow (!), kids were on a two-hour delay. Finally got around to this workout, went alright: Quads are tired—that’d be yesterday’s squats. Lower back and shoulders are tired—that’d be yesterday’s shoveling.

Not super happy with the supplemental today, but I guess two rest-pause sets isn’t so bad. It’s amazing how quickly the smaller muscles tire out—as long as the weight isn’t literally crushing me, I feel like I can rest mid-set with squats. Even with deadlifts (and now straps), I can rest a bit at the top. But with overhead press and bench, man—once I’m done, I’m done.

Definitely not shoveling more today: it’s supposed to get above freezing tomorrow, so I’m counting on it melting a bit on its own. That said, there’s enough snow on the asphalt that a sled push isn’t going to happen, and even Farmer’s walks aren’t wise given the ice underneath. So, here’s how I expect things to play out:

  • Tuesday afternoon → Monday’s easy conditioning (with interest)
  • Wednesday morning → Wednesday’s easy conditioning
  • Wednesday afternoon → Tuesday’s hard conditioning

No interest on that hard conditioning: I skipped yesterday’s easy conditioning outright, but today I’m just swapping workouts. Anyway, if all goes well, I should be back on schedule come Thursday.

Workout: Easy conditioning, 1515-1645 (90 minutes)

Pwn’s Tower of Babel
Power clean into thruster (95 lbs) + 5 chin-ups/pull-ups (strict, various grips)
1, 2, …, 5, 6, 5, …, 2, 1
Time: 14:32

Weighted vest walk - 28 kg - 35 minutes + 2x(big hill)

So if I don’t like devil’s presses paired with DB snatches, I do like cleans paired with thrusters. Took each clean into a thruster for the required rep count; so, clean-pause-thruster-reset, repeat. That was hard. Kept the cleans explosive throughout, but the thrusters slowed way down from 4-down until the end. Ended up with 36 cleans, 36 thrusters—so 72 total “somethings” for the day—and 55 chins. Not bad.

Got in yesterday’s easy conditioning plus interest: did the big hill another 2 times, which basically amounted to going around my block twice. That added another 15-16 minutes, which is a 25% penalty at best, and close to 33% at worst, haha!

BTW, I’m glad I swapped things up: sun came out and driveway started clearing on its own. Assuming the warming trend continues as predicted, it’ll even be dry in time for hard conditioning tomorrow.

Outstanding work dude! To make your nomenclature easier, a clean into thruster is known as a “cluster”.

Which opens up all SORTS of fun names for workouts, haha.

Clusters are killer. I give them equal billing to a viper press in the absence of a log.

@atlas13 - FWIW, my man, getting a sled is where my conditioning revolution began. An honest-to-goodness game changer.

and not this old diesel:

I’m in. (Though who doesn’t love ol’ Tow Mater, am I right?)

Funny that Pwn mentioned snow, because it was definitely the old diesel in me that cleared that driveway on Monday: it wasn’t pretty, but I just kept going!

Workout: Easy conditioning + calves, 0740-0910 (90 minutes)

Seated CR - 220 lbs - 25, 20, 15
Bike@120 bpm - 15 minutes
Weighted vest walk - 28 kg - 35 minutes

Fasted. Opted for the bike rather than trying to run on a snow-covered track. Works the lower body differently than running, but works the lungs similarly—felt good today, so that’s cool.

Hard conditioning and daily work later, but right now, it’s time to eat!

Wednesday - 19 January 2022
Workout: Hard conditioning, 1205-1300 (55 minutes)

Jump rope tabata - 4x40/10 - 1 round

5 rounds of:
a) 10 KB swings - 24 kg
b) 11 chin-ups/pull-ups (strict, various grips)
Time: 8:12

Jump rope tabata - 4x40/10 - 1 round

In a 28-kg weighted vest, 8 rounds of:
a) Sled push - 25 yds - 135 + sled = 222 lbs
b) Run to start - 25 yds
c) 7 air squats
d) Run to sled - 25 yds
e) Sled push - 25 yds - 135 + sled = 222 lbs
f) 7 air squats
Time: 20:06

Man, that daily work circuit was terrible today! Hands were cold and grip was failing, so chins were harder than usual (and even the swings were dicey by the end). Got all 11 reps in the first round, but had to drop once—and sometimes twice—in every subsequent round.

But apparently I made up for it on the sled push: very nearly had 8 rounds in 20 minutes flat. And that’s amazing, because it felt like I was moving so, so slowly.

Okay, it’s Day 4 and I’ve now completed all 4 days’ worth of work (with interest, as required). Back on track tomorrow!

Edit: Update at 1640—couldn’t leave it alone, could I? They’re predicting highs in the mid-teens by tomorrow afternoon and near- or below-zero lows through Saturday, so I shoveled more snow this afternoon, just to give it a chance to melt away while temps are still well-above freezing. Man, it’s only the first real snow of the season and already I’m so over it…

Thursday - 20 January 2022
Workout: Deadlift, 0750-0900 (70 minutes)

Warm-up
Throws + jumps

Begin: 0814; End: 0854; Duration: 43 minutes
Deadlift - 115x5, 150x5, 180x5 | 215x5, 245x5, 280x5 | 165x50 (rep PR)
Ab wheel - ramp (14) - 30, 20, 10
Dip - 60 - 15, 15
OA row - L/R - 50 - 18, 12
DB lateral raise - 2x12 lbs - 30
BPA - red - 10 high + 10 mid + 10 low

Assistance totals:
Push - 60 reps
Pull - 60 reps
Single-leg/core - 60 reps

My body’s feeling rough, but I’m still pushing: 165x50 was no joke. Relatively light weight, yes, but my lungs were absolutely burning from about rep 20 forward. Pretty happy with that because, once again, I had no real expectations beyond no fewer than 25 reps. In fact, when I first came into the weight room, I was thinking about doing a straight up 5x10 today just because I had no intensity. Hah! Anyway, I think it was rep 36 or 37 when I decided to go for it, and it was definitely rep 41 when I knew I had it.

Work sets were fine, used straps only on the supplemental set today.

Not sure why I’m pushing these sets so far, but I’m pretty happy because I think high rep counts on the big lifts as daily occurrences will come in handy when I tackle Super Squats.

Ab wheel felt strong today, and so did the dips, despite my left wrist acting up the past few weeks. Bumped up the weight a bit on those lateral raises today and, man, were my delts pumped—front, middle, rear, shoulders were like freakin’ cannon balls! Followed that set immediately with the BPAs and those were as hard as they’ve ever been.

Planning on Pwn’s Countdown with daily chin-ups/pull-ups and a weighted vest walk this afternoon.

It’s self-perpetuation. You’re eating to support your training, and, in turn, you are fueled up to train harder…which forces you to eat more to recover, which opens up the gateway for harder training. The only limitation is your ability to digest. Absolutely killing it dude!
