Right. So according to all our online friends the most effective post-workout meal would be a combination of Surge, some more protein (preferably high in BCAA’s) and glutamine. And in case I don’t want to buy Surge I can combine about 2 scoops of whey, glutamine and some honey and this is it.
Just want to know if I am completely right.
Gus.
I use the same drink JB described, more or less. Gatorade, BCAA’s and glutamine, with some Power Drive added when I can afford it. One thing I noticed is that the Protein Factory’s BCAA blend has a weird ratio (6:3:1), but Alex can add more isoleucine if you want to bring the ratio up to 2:1:1 (just costs a little more).
Gus, Surge already has enough protein, carbs, and BCAA’s in it. Adding protein and honey won’t get you anything and will probably make it less effective. A protein/honey/BCAA blend before a workout would be ok though.
Wondering how many scoops of Surge is everybody using. The suggested dose get you only 25 gm of Protein if you’re under 200lbs. Is this actually enough? What if I were to add a scoop of Supplement Direct’s pure whey protein to it, would I be messing the formula up?
Muscle maker- John has addressed this either on the forum or in his post-workout puzzle articles or his Appetite for Construction column. Can’t remember where. No, that’s all the protein you need. DO NOT SCREW UP THE BIOTEST FORMULA! If something needed to be added, they would have added it! The only thing you can add to Surge is plain powdered creatine. Everything else will screw it up. Hope that helps.
Thanks TEK. I did do a search but obviously, not good enough job. Thanks a million… I definitely don’t want to screw the formula up. The reason I asked is because, with surge I haven’t felt nor noticed anything different from my previous post workout formula (whey/malto)… so I thought, the 25 gm of protein wasn’t enough. I’ll try 3 scoops and see what happens.
Gus: I think that on this thread we are mixing up discussions on POST-workout drinks, and drinks to sip on DURING a workout. The H20, BCAA, Glutamine, Gatorade that JB was discussing is to sip DURING a workout. SURGE (with only perhaps creatine added) is for POST workout. Be careful with adding things to the formulation.
Actually, what Testosterone.net recommends is 0.4g of protein plus 0.8g of carbs per kilogram immediately after exercise. I weight 95kg, so my optimal intake would be 76g of carbs, and 38g of protein. I don’t get that from a single serving of Surge, I’d have to take 2. So I figure the bottle would last about a full week. Too much money for a guy like me. That’s why I presented an alternative. That is 2 scoops of whey protein (preferably high in BCAA’s), some honey, glutamine and more powder BCAA’s if you want. This is it. No confusion, just a simple post-workout meal. Thanks, Gus.
Gus, that will work, just not as well as Surge or a Surge-like homemade brew. Honey has a low GI, so it brings the total GI of the concoction down. It’ll probably get into your system faster than a normal meal, but definitely not as effectively as Surge or a hydro whey/high-GI carb mix. I got by for years on as PW shake consisting of Gatorade and whey isolate, but when I switched to hydrolyzed whey I got even better results.
Gus, how many times a week do you workout? I generally workout 4 and weigh in at just over 200 lbs. Were I to take Surge according to the .8/.4 carbs/protein ration I would need three scoops of surge, roughly. So would you. So, the cost per month would be $62.40 for me, because I can get Surge locally for $26 a container. That translates to $3.90 a serving. That really isn’t too expensive. If you shop around you can find Surge for a relatively inexpensive price. I figured out what your blend would cost a serving from the Protein factory. Let’s see: 2 scoops of CFM Whey (very high in BCAAs) about 55 grams (cost: 1.07 per serving), BCAAs about 15 grams (cost: 1.04 per serving), l-glutamine about 10 grams (cost: .66 per seving), honey, I had to guess here, .15 per tablespoon, say you take two tablespoons that a (cost: .30 per serving). The total cost is $3.07 per serving. That means that Surge is only .83 more per serving which is $13.28 more a month. That means that you would only save about 2/3 of a tank of gas, these days with prices) by making your own formula. Of course you can forget the BCAAs and get cheaper whey and save probably over $1.50 more a serving, but why? When you can get Surge which will work better for not too much more than your own original formula.
