Bartl's Back!

Wow. Just got home from training with Alwyn Cosgrove and it was more than I could have ever imagined. He completely kicked my ass and almost made my friend puke on two separate occasions…and that was before we even got to weights.

I am not going to describe the session here. Nope. Nada. Don’t ask.

I’m writing another article for the site about Alwyn and how he trains, and if TC doesn’t decide to run it, I will post it here.

Until then, just know that Alwyn (pronounced Allen) has an amazing Scottish accent and could quite possibly be the nicest dude on the planet.

Hey Bart,

Can’t wait to hear about your training session with Alwyn. I heard him on The Fitcast once and ever since I’ve been reading everything I can by him, and as soon as my leg is well enough to start sprints again, I’m going to incorporate his heart rate training methods.

Also, awesome post a couple of days ago. I’m certainly going to incorporate that kind of attitude in my life slowly but surely until its the way that I always live it.

slowly = half assedly.

just throw yourself into it. I keep looking at my life and even good friends are now poison who no longer belong in my daily existence.

load for 6, lift for 8…spare nobody

Glad it was a good experience, any chances of you going back to train with him again?

I do. Its going to be a few weeks though but yes, I plan on it.

Where o where did bartl go, is the question that every single person on this site should have been asking themselves over the weekend.

Let me take a swig of an ice cold glass of water (I’m not joking here) and get to the details of one hell of a grand weekend.

(insert gulping noise)

Ahhhh, lets begin:

I suggest we go all the way back to Thursday. This is the day my friend from back East decided to make her first trip ever to the best side of America, aka the West Coast.

After traveling almost 3,000 miles and starting the day at about midnight Pacific time she lands in SB. Whats the first thing we do?

Everyone, get your mind out of the gutter!

I took her to the gym to train. See, she claimed to be a hard ass in the gym and herself has accomplished quite the body transformation, so I had to see for myself what she was capable of. I told her I was going to push her as hard as I could and I expected her to do the same.

We arrive at my old gym, the one where the magical transformation took place and there was one person training. One. The entire gym was ours! Today was an arm session, which I knew was her weakest point. Here is what I put her through:

A1) Incline Close Grip Bench - 6-8 reps
A2) Overhead Tri-Extension - 10-12 reps
A3) Reverse Grip Push downs - 20-25 reps

B1) Barbell Curl - 6-8 reps,
B2) Low Pulley Rope Curl - 10-12 reps
B3) Reverse Grip Barbell Curl - 20-25 reps

Notice this is different than when I do this by myself. There was no rest between the exercises, just the movement over to them. Also, we didn’t monitor the rest in between the sets because while one was resting, the other was lifting.

I must say, she did amazing. She pushed herself harder than she had she even went up in weight compared to what she normally does. As for myself, she pushed me really good. I mean c’mon, when a good looking lady is watching are you really not going to try extra hard?

The rest of the day we chilled in the sun. Since she had never seen the Pacific, I took her to the beach. After the beach, we caught some grub and some beers over the Laker game. End of day 1.

Day 2 starts off with a nice little 6.5 mile hike up into the mountains that took almost 3 hours. Come to find out, that was one of the hardest hikes in SB. Awesome view though.

With cardio out of the way and completely stinky from sweat, we did the next logical thing someone would do while visiting SB and thats surf. She did almost catch two waves but she only got up on her knee’s, so I will give her half credit for that AND she took a couple on the head and just laughed. It was cool.

Friday night was mellow because we knew what Saturday entailed: waking up early to go train with Alwyn. End of day 2.

Day 3 starts off with coffee and a 90 mile drive down to Santa Clarita to have breakfast then train. There was a kick ass little diner right across the street from the gym and we had a good solid meal of an omelet.

We then met Alwyn and you will have to wait for my article to read about the training.

Let me just say this: I have never, EVER in my entire life, seen someone so worked by a training session than my friend. When she got done, she collapsed to the floor and layed in the fetal position for a good 7-8 minutes before moving.

I’ll give you one hint: 96 reps in 125 seconds. Yikes!

Then I threw some Surge down her throat and off we went to SB.

The rest of the day we didn’t do much and you will know soon enough as to why. Saturday was chill as her flight left at 6 am on Sunday morning.

After she left, I went back to sleep for 3.5 more hours, got up and surfed for 3 hours, having one of the best sessions of the year AND the wave of the year for me so far. Which is saying a lot because if you followed my PC, I caught a lot of really good waves.

So that brings us up to speed on this past weekend. Now, I am finishing some left over “special” lasagna (its Shugart’s recipe so you get one guess as to why its special) and a shit load of broccoli.

Soon the gym. I got one week left of this program before my tri training starts up again.

And I am now adding Surge Recovery to my list of supplements and subtracting HRX and BCAA’s. Just don’t have the cash right now for those.

Paying for supplements sucks.

Listen… just because I layed in the fetal position for 5 minutes does not mean I am not in good shape. I have never, EVER felt like that in my life. Before my 96 reps began, Alwyn said “Remember what your legs felt like the last mile of your half marathon? We’re going to make them feel like that in 120 seconds”. Well it took 125 and they felt worse than during or after my half marathon.

As far as the arm training session went, I saw first hand how and why Bartl has made the transformation he has. He really does push himself and really does load for 6, lift for 8. You would never know that he used to be the “fat kid” and now he has me to answer to if he starts slacking. V-Diet in the fall anyone?

Anyways, rad weekend. Chris was a great host and a great training partner. I will be monitoring his progress from afar and expect him to do the same for me.

PS. Half credit for getting up on the surfboard on my knees? Only half?! I would have gotten up all the way, but someone decided to be a champ and not wear a wetsuit, so got cold and had to get out of the water and could no longer help me. How’s that for half-credit?

Sounds like an awesome time, Bartl! Any idea when your article will be published?

Haha. I think you just got ‘pwned’ Bartl.

Did she tell you she hated you when she was lying there?

She tends to do that. Or she might utter an expletive in your direction. Either way, you’re correct, the girl is pretty hardcore.

Would you believe me if I told you she couldn’t even do a pushup 6 months ago?

Ya, she told me about the pushups. Must have had a good trainer.

And while lying on the floor in a puddle of sweat, the only thing that came out of her mouth was air. She could not speak. If anything was going to come out, I figured it would have been puke, but to no avail.

With all this Court bashing going on I thought I’d bring up one very important point… While I was doing that killer circuit of 96 in 125, Chris was watching, sipping on his Surge Workout Fuel. Chris…did you do the same circuit I did?

As a first hand witness, I can confirm that while Courtney was absolutely demolishing the leg matrix (in an attempt to set a gym record), Chris was enjoying an ice cold drink, kicking back and watching. And giggling. And pointing…

Meanwhile - despite NEVER STOPPING SMILING there was most definitely an expletive uttered from Courtney.

Additionally - prior to the leg matrix, I can’t be sure, but I think there was a sighting of a 200lbs man unable to do a push-up…

Just saying…

Seriously - both of these guys really brought it on Saturday. I have no doubt that both of them will hit any goals they set for themselves with that type of training intensity.

You are right, I admit it, I didn’t do the same circuit.
Yes, I was drinking my post session Surge Recovery because unlike someone I didn’t get a 25 minute break in the middle of the session to catch my breath.

C’mon AC, I got 1 pushup!

I can’t wait to submit this article, so people know what exactly happened.

Nightmares are still ensuing…

25 minutes my ass… write that article already or I’m going to start spilling the beans.

Ok…it was 20 minutes

Actually Alwyn that’s not a smile. It’s affectionately referred to as the ‘Front Squat’ grimace. It was thus named as it first appeared during Courtney’s first exposure to front squats. And really only a grimace cause she knew Bulgarian SS followed immediately after.

How very true! I’m probably one of the only ones, if not THE only one to have witnessed both Bartl’s transformation here on T-Nation through the Physique Clinic, but also Courtney’s.

There’s not much that girl won’t put herself through. I missed seeing her squat 145 yesterday, but I’m looking forward to the day she hits 185.

At a gym with 4000+ members I’ve never seen a female squat 185. My money is on Court.

I’m looking for the day she hits 225.

I want video of both.

If every “trainee” was like Courtney life would be simple…
Great form, internally motivated, dedicated, etc.

Like I told her after her half, she did the work. I just stood there and sipped on my protein, or my waxy maize,or my bcaa’s, etc, you get the idea.
