Barbell Rows Are Bad?

I did a lot of bend BB rowing but never really felt soreness or pump in the back. Some days ago I tried a row machine and the feeling was great.

In my opinion it’s really not about moving the weight up but squeezing the back really hard.

Lighten your weight stefan, bend so that you pretty vertical like coleman does and row to bottom of sternum… you’ll feel the contraction, pump etc… then slowly raise the weight from that position of form, 2.5kg/5lbs at a time… i had the same problem as you and now i do BB rows every back day, after doing this.

Thanks Joe I’ll give this a try. Seems as if I have to relearn the movement.

You mean horizontal, don’t you?

lol! i do…

the way i decribe means you have to use a much lighter load…

What about doing rows on that thing that has handles for both arms like a machine but you add weight to them, Arnold does them in Pumping Iron but I don’t remember what they are called.

You mean a t-bar row? Those are pretty close to on-par with BO rows imo.

Yes, keep doing them.[/quote]

used to not feel em, and dreaded doin em, but u gotta stick with em, maybe strengthen the lumbars to help stable, but they will pay u if u keep at em

Agreed. If I was doing one, I wouldn’t feel much need to do the other unless I just wanted to add them in. I personally give the nod to T-Bar Rows if given a choice.

I love rowing in general. Seated cable rows w/ a rope attachment, with the many different angles of incidence that you can create based on how and when you pull apart the rope, always keep my back muscles sore.

Plus, I feel that the free range of the rope allows me to pull my scapula back in a more controlled fashion.

Hope that made sense.

I also do BB rows and 1-arm DB rows…

Yeah, T-bars are great too. The old school “corner T-bar” row, not the machine chest supported ones, I don’t like those much.

I never liked DB rows (1 arm) but after a few years of using them sporadically, not feeling the action, either sing too light a weight for quality, or too heavy and not hitting the mark, i put them in full-time. Spent some time on them, got upto 60kg for reps which is strong for me, (80kgBW) and i saw some great improvement in my back, it filled out nicely leaving me to concentrate on the lats again!

So in conclusion: BB Rows, DB rows, Machine rows, Seat cable wide and close rows and face pulls-- all the rows i need for bulk.
