…You can’t just assume someone will know the message you’re trying to send with something. And it’s more the responsibility of someone choosing his nonverbal messages to have an idea what they might convey than it is for other people to be up to date on what things mean today - particularly if the people in question are over the age of 25.

Following this line of reasoning will ensure that things never change and that people consider clothing styles that have been popular since the early 90’s to be “thuggish” in spite of it not being so.
I will also say that change is not done quietly. Of all of the talk about how we need to move past racism, most of you seem deluded enough to actually believe that this can be done without you personally feeling or hearing anything you may not like.
No, you can change clothing styles, body art, hair cuts, and all of that all you want, but you just can’t whine about people being biased when they respond to a message you’re choosing to send.
Or you can whine about it - but you won’t find a lot of agreement that it’s just more racism.

If that bias is mostly coming from one side of the aisle, I surely can.
The picture above is some random pic I found off the net but I chose it because this is typically how most of my frat brothers dress most of the time unless they are going to work. There are some here who would be “cautious” of these men for no reason other than that they are clueless about an entire culture in this country.
We’ve already discussed how out of date your personal concept of what a “thug” looks like is. You also claim that race has nothing to do with who you are more cautious of even though you misunderstand the culture and see it as a negative.
Whether you can comprehend it or not, I don’t go around judging “baggy pants” as being “thuggish” and then assume I need to pay more attention to that person.
And if you were a 110.lb woman college gal, you honestly don’t think you’d have an extra amount of alertness/unease to certain types of dress, grooming, percieved attitude, and even physical size?

Are you incapable of understanding this? Someone who grew up around the culture would not be afraid of the culture. My cousin weighs about 120lbs, if that and NO, she would not be afraid, uneasy or anything else around people dressed like that. In fact, she goes to a historically black college.
That picture prof X posted of the black dudes…that’s how alot of white guys dress too. People aren’t intimidated by them tho to the same degree when they dress like that.
Personally, as a latino, when I stuided in the USA, I was never intimidated by blacks, in fact, I found it kind of amusing that 5 foot 4 nothing black guy in rapper style clothes, was intimidating to big white football playing slob on campus.
OMG DEMARIO IS IN A …GANG?
I mean, is this piece of genetic trash intimidating because he has dark skin to someone?
He’s 21 and 5 '4 at at around 115 lbs.
But apparently, his rap style clothes, his dark skin, and his thick urban flava, indicate him as someone to be feared.

Are some of you really this culturally retarded?
How fucking sad.
I’m not even framing my question on baggy pants and oversized shirts at the moment. Now knowing that, would you be able to answer the question?

Been awhile since high school. However, in my school if you fought one black guy, you almost hoped he would win. Otherwise your butt was getting jumped with numbers sometime in the near future. That’s not a stereotype. It was concrete reality at my Jr/Sr High. Oddly enough, the reverse never happened through all my years at this school.
By the way, I don’t care how small a thug is when he wants to you rob/mug you. In Atlanta, he’s probably armed and already covering you.
Pfff…I will admit, brothaz do jump alot more…but so do bosnians and russians.
Part of that is cuz whites don’t stick together.
As far as lil black dude coming at you, I think those fools are pathetic, I do not fear someone jsut because of the color of their skin.
If you look like a little bitch, you prolly are a lil bitch.
Are you seriously telling me young berg is intimidating?
I thinks its pathetic to talk about thugs, thugs work off fear, he who is not afraid, and smiles at everyone knowingly, openly puts fear in the heart of those who rely on bullying.
You create the reality if you perceive it, and I do not perceive there to be criminals or thugs.
See that’s why you’re a lil girl, you already live in an atmosphere of fear of fools like that.
The second you start not giving a shit, and looking at some dude like young berg or anyother fool and smiling at him diabolically is when you can stop being afraid of shit like that.

Sikkario, your commentary is invaluable. And I don’t mean that sarcastically.

Fear of making the nightly news as yet another statistic, is a natural human emotion. Fear, of course, doesn’t mean I wouldn’t defend myself, curling up in a fetal position, begging for mom. I simply don’t feel the need to lie about feeling some level of unease, intimidation, or fear.
You should start fantasizing about the heinous things you’d do to some little cocolo like young berg, just for being such an arrogant midget. Then when that opportunity arises you won’t have to fear it, you can relish the opportunity to make some lil Tyrell, into some horrific hate crime statistic.
Alot of people think blacks and latinos are confrontational, but that “I wish a mothafucka would,” attitude is a powerful deterrent and defense mechanism.
If you really live in fear of people with guns that badly, or knives or whatver, why not start packing.

There’s a range of emotional arousal from fear. And differing responses to fear. Again, I’m not talking about a jumping to the ground, covering up, and praying to God they’ll just stop beating you, kind of fear. Or, a fear of just walking down the sidewalk. It’s not a, no fear------paralazyed, pissing your pants, on or off deal. At least, that I’ve ever experienced.
Professor X, IF I dressed up in a polo shirt, and khaki’s and went to Compton California how do you think I would be treated ? Ok then… Its a two-way street buddy.
And to be more precise, the ass whooping I would recieve in Compton is alot worse then the cold stare you might recieve in your football jersey. Face it man all you got to do is look somewhat presentable and you got the world at your fingertips.
